1 COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume 37, Issue 12 Notes from the President I hope all our members and their families had a great Thanksgiving. This month is our annual Christmas Luncheon on Sunday, December 9th. This year s event is being chaired by Dick & Sue Brownlee and this is always one of our best attended events of the year. I have been told over 100 members and guests will attend. See details elsewhere in the newsletter. December, 2018 What s Happening This Month See page three. For the first time ever we will be swearing in officers and board members at the Christmas Luncheon rather than at the January meeting. Congratulations to Bob Joseph being elected as club President. I'm sure he has some new ideas he will be presenting to the club throughout the course of the year. Together with the other officers and board members I look forward to the New year. The club enjoyed a great year with many new events added to our list of regularly scheduled events. I personally want to thank all the members who stepped up and chaired an event this year. You efforts made it enjoyable for the entire club. The officers and board members will perform and end of year 2018 budget review in order for us to prepare a 2019 club budget for presentation to the membership for approval in early Have a great holiday season, hope to see you soon. Editor s note: It s 1957, we still like Ike. The top songs were All shook up by Elvis while Pat Boone was singing about Love letters in the sand. Our average wage was $82 a week and there were more than 7000 drive-in theaters in the US. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF Regards, Frank 1

5 This from the on-line Corvette Forum Few cars have generated as much discussion as the midengine C8 Corvette. But will it be as good as we think? As of now, it looks inevitable that Zora Arkus-Duntov s dream of a mid-engine Corvette is finally going to come true. And thus far, you won t hear too many people saying negative things about the groundbreaking C8 Corvette. Well, except for the never-ending controversy surrounding the car s potential styling. Otherwise, it s all peaches and cream. But is it, really? You can t blame people for seeing the mid-engine C8 Corvette through rose-colored glasses. Thus, we were particularly interested in this video from YouTuber Brink of Speed. Mostly because he promises to explore not just the good stuff about the mid-engine Corvette. But he also tackles the more controversial aspects as well. The first downside? Well, people love the styling of the C7, which BOS calls in my opinion, the most beautiful Corvette of all time. Thus, can Chevrolet really top itself in that regard? On top of that, it isn t surprising that purists are upset at the possibility of a mid-engine Corvette. But that doesn t include our host. I consider myself a big-time Corvette enthusiast, he says. And I love this move big time. He admits owning three different Corvettes, including his current C7 Z06. And even going off the little information we have on the C8 Corvette thus far, he s already sold on its potential. If GM gets this right with price, looks, and performance, it will replace the C7 as the top selling Corvette of all time, guaranteed. Talk about a bold statement. Is $170,000 Too Much for a Mid-Engine C8 Corvette Zora? Rumor suggests C8 Corvette will cost a hefty $169,900. Is that too much even if it is a range-topping, world-beating hypercar? 5

7 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Show November th On Friday November 16 th Pete Ricigliano and I traveled to Chicago, Illinois to attend the 10 th Annual Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center near O Hare airport. This was a first time event for us but our COB presence was noticed since we wore our colors with pride. Driving through Ohio, it took us about 8.5 hours to get to the Crown Plaza Hotel, which was across the street and walking distance to the Show. On Saturday morning, we expected to see many very high end Corvette show cars along with great muscle cars from the 50 s, 60 s and 70 s. But our expectations were exceeded and we enjoyed every minute that we took walking around looking at the cars and meeting some great people. We were joined at the show by Etienne (ET) Kojsza, as he was visiting with his son Michael in Chicago. There were fabulous Corvettes from each generation, including many survivors that were on display as is. We had fun talking with the owners and hearing stories about the history of these cool Corvettes and muscle cars. Needless to say, we saw over 500 cool cars which we never had seen up close before! And it was well worth the weekend excursion which both Pete and I said we would go back again. Skip Polowy 7

14 History of the Corvette, part 5 The 1957 Corvette is the same body as the 1956 edition. The major difference is found under the hood. The new engine is the 283 cu. Inch small block originally debuted in 1955 but with a higher compression ratio and bore size. It comes in three performance levels. The base offering uses a single four barrel carburetor with dual exhausts and rated at 220 HP and the mileage is estimated to be 17.8 mpg. One step up adds a second carb and the output climbs to 245 hp. The final option adds a high lift cam and fuel injection, pushing the output to 283 hp, or 1 horsepower per cubic inch. N This added $726 to the sticker price and 43 buyers opted for this. New for 1957 were three gear box options; a three speed manual, a new 4 speed manual and the old faithful 2 speed Powerglide. The base rear axle is a Postreaction 3.7:1. Optional this year was a Postreaction 4.11:1 rear and if so inclined, a buyer could also specify a Postreaction 4.56:1 rear, mainly intended for drag strip use. With a curb weight of 2985 lbs., the base price sticker is $3176 (same as the 1956 model) and a total of 6339 were produced. The 1957 Corvette performance with the 283 HP engine: 0 30 mph, 2.9 sec ¼ quarter mile 14.3 sec curb weight 2985 lbs mph, 5.7 sec Top speed 132 mph lbs. /HP mph, 16.8 sec Braking 60-0 mph 169 ft.
