1 COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume 38, Issue 1 Notes from the President The New Year is upon us and I am excited to get to work as your new president. Thank you to those who have shown confidence in me. I will work with the board to try to enhance everyone s experience with the club. We had a great ending to 2018 with our annual Christmas Luncheon. With near record attendance everyone enjoyed great food at the Tonawanda Castle and fun & laughter at the photo booth. Great touch! Sue & Dick Brownlee what a great job, Thank you very much! January, 2019 Note from the editor Letters to the editor will be a new feature of your newsletter for Have a complaint? Have a suggestion? Have a favorite recipe? Or a restaurant review? All signed letter(s) will be published. First up for 2019 is our annual pizza party in February. A sign-up sheet will be at the January meeting. This year it will be hosted by Skip & Maureen Polowy. Cost is $2.50 per person. If you are unable to make the January meeting please contact Skip or Maureen to let them know you will be attending in February. The Board held our annual year end budget meeting December 12 th to review 2018 and prepare the 2019 budget. Thank You Skip Polowy for preparing the plan and hosting the meeting. Details will be presented to the membership in the near future. Mike Buccilli and I are in the early planning stages for our annual car show. This year it will be an All Corvette Show. More info coming soon. The 15 th Anniversary Caravan is in need of a Chairperson. COB members with past Caravan experience are always ready to help out and make it an easy learn for someone new. So, get involved and give your ideas to an already great event. What makes a club great is when the membership gets involved and brings new ideas to the table. Heritage is important, but new and exciting events keep interest high. It s 1958, DDE is POTUS and in July, he authorized NASA (in response to 1957 s Sputnik), gas is $.30/gal and we earn an average of $3673/year. The hottest songs are Volare and All I have to do is Dream by the Everly Brothers. The hottest TV shows are Gun smoke, Wagon Train, Have Gun, will travel and The Rifleman while we went to the movies to see The attack of the 50 foot woman and Vertigo. 6 History of the Corvette, part 6 The 1958 Corvette had a production run of 9168 units and was the first time the car showed a profit for GM. The obvious difference between this year and the 1957 was the addition of dual headlights. No so obvious was the general overall increase in size and weight of the Corvette. For the first time, the weight exceeded 3000 lbs., checking in at 3204 lbs. Most of the weight increase was due to the fact this car was 9 inches longer and 2 inches wider than its 1957 brother. The engine was the same 283 cu. inch V-8 and was available in three horse power ratings. The base offering was rated at 230 HP and had a single 4 barrel carb. Next up was a 270 HP version with twin 4 barrel carbs. The addition of the Rochester fuel injection with a hotter cam, solid lifters and a 10.5:1 compression ratio resulted in 290 HP. Otherwise, all engines had a 9.51 compression ratio and all required octane premium gas. Transmission options were the 2 speed Powerglide auto, a 3 speed manual and a 4 speed manual gear box. Positraction rear end ratios were 3.7:1 as a base offering with optional ratios of 4.11:1 and 4.56:1. The last option, when combined with the 290 HP engine, came with a window sticker that indicated the car was not intended for street use. One can only guess at how many of the owners paid attention to that. 6

7 The 1958 Corvette performance with the 290 HP engine: 0 30 mph, 2.9 sec ¼ quarter mile 14.3 sec curb weight 3204 lbs mph, 5.7 sec Top speed 132 mph lbs. /HP mph, 16.8 sec Braking 60-0 mph 169 ft. MPG 13.6 The dashboard with its 160 MPH speedometer and passenger grab bar of the 1958 Corvette. This instrument cluster arrangement was the first time all the gauges were placed directly in front of the driver. NOTE: Above performance values in red are the values of the 1957 Corvette. I could find very little info about the 1958 Corvette performance. 7

8 For you fans of the new 2019 ZR1 Corvette, check out the video at Jay Leno s Garage. The video starts out with Jay driving the new vette at just a hair over 200 mph. This is on pump gas with the factory tires. The 6.2 L V8 delivers 755 HP and 715 ft.lbs. of torque, driving your choice of a 7 speed manual gear box or 8 speed automatic. Purchase price includes a two day training course at the Spring Mountain facility near Las Vegas. 8

9 CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON Corvettes of Buffalo celebrated the Holiday Season on December 9th with a Buffet Luncheon held at the historic Tonawanda Castle. Co-hosted by Sue and Dick Brownlee and Terry and Jim Decker, the gathering was attended by 109 members. Great food was offered and self-guided tours of the 1897 Armory added to the enjoyment. A photo booth provided some added fun along with displays of members' photos of Christmases past as well as their early cars. New this year was the swearing in ceremony and installation of COB officers and board of directors for Happy new year to all the COB members. 9
