1 COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume 37, Issue 11 Notes from the President The Corvette driving season is coming to an end. Looking back we had a very warm summer days with the exception of annual car show which could not catch a break with the weather. The great weather allowed the members to participate in more individual and club events than normal. Thank you to all our volunteer members who chaired and event this year. I know the members appreciate you taking the lead. November, 2018 What s Happening This Month See page three. A very large Thank You to the all the members who contributed to the Food Pantry at the October meeting. I know your donation was greatly appreciated. As a reminder if you are a member and unable to attend the November 10th meeting but wish to vote, review the candidates running for offices and the board of director positions. Make your selections for officers and seven (7) board members. Place you proxy votes in a sealed envelope and place it in an outer envelope and mail it to any current officer or board member. The envelope will be collected by the officers and handed over to the election committee for tabulation. Don't forget to bring an unwrapped toy to the November meeting for collection by Sue Brownlee. In closing, good luck to all the candidates running for office. Editor s note: It s 1956 and we still like IKE. Elvis Presley is on top with Heartbreak Hotel and Don t be Cruel. Gas is $.30/gal and your average annual income was $3532. The Corvette receives some help from an unlikely corner. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF See you soon. Frank 1

6 History of the Corvette, part 4 The 1956 Corvette is a new and improved version of the poorly received 1955 edition. The improvements are both aesthetic and mechanical. The 1956 body has under gone major changes as well as more subtle adjustments. True roll up windows (power assist available), locking doors, external door handles, an optional hard top. Still the same 102 wheel base but now gone is the slab sided profile of the earlier cars. The engine is the 265 cu. Inch debuted in 1955 but with a higher compression ratio. It comes in three performance levels. The base offering uses a single four barrel carburetor with dual exhausts and rated at 210 HP and the mileage is estimated to be 17.8 mpg. One step up adds a second carb and the output climbs to 225 hp. The final option adds a high lift cam and pushes the output to 240 hp. Two gear box options; a three speed manual and the old faithful 2 speed Powerglide. The rear axle is now 3.7:1. With a curb weight of 3020 lbs., the base price sticker is $3120. The 1956 Corvette performance with the stock 210 HP engine: 0 30 mph, 2.9 sec ¼ quarter mile 15.8 sec curb weight 3020 lbs mph, 7.3 sec. Top speed 129 mph lbs. /HP mph, 20.8 sec Braking 60-0 mph 169 ft. MPG 17.8 T This is the first body style change since the 1953 introduction. 6

7 In 1956 the accountants at Chevy were a bit happier with the 3467 Corvettes produced. But when compared to the more than 15,000 Thunderbirds sold, the picture took on some darker overtones. The Corvette s fate was still not guaranteed. Something else was needed to cement the Corvette s future. A little help in shaping that vision came from an unlikely source, Chevy s arch competitor Ford. A Ford production planner, one Chase Morsey, probably looked at the sales numbers of his 1956 T-Bird as compared to the Corvette. More than 15,000 T-Birds sold compared to 3467 Corvettes produced. It had to be patently obvious that Ford had the better idea and the future of the T-Bird was set. It would be marketed as a personal car, somewhere between the family sedan and a high performance roadster. Ford decided to let Chevy be the marketer of sports cars and essentially any future competition between the Corvette and the T-Bird was over. Now that Chevy was the sole producer of the only American sports car, the Corvette had to prove itself in the world of auto racing. The official Chevy position was the company would not participate in competitions, didn t want any acknowledgement or recognition. So it was up to individuals or small groups to push the Corvette into the racing world. The Corvette s main competition came in the form of the JaguarXK-120 (~130 mph) and the Mercedes Benz gull winged 300 SL (~140 mph). In order to be competitive, the Corvette would have to be capable of reaching 150 mph. Zora Duntov believed passionately in the Corvette and Ed Cole, his boss, allowed Duntov to work with those individuals and small groups who planned on racing the Corvette. While the official corporate stance was not to participate in racing, Ed Cole s decision to give Duntov latitude meant Chevy would supply parts, engines and other equipment to qualified groups. But before that would happen, Duntov and his small crew managed a two-way, certified run of mph at Daytona in January The significance of this was the engine and chassis modifications were done with parts that were readily available as over-the-counter purchases made by anyone at any Corvette dealer. In February, at the official Daytona Speed Weeks, Duntov averaged mph, sweeping all the competition, including T-Birds and two other Corvettes. 7

10 This from the online Corvette Forum C8 Corvette Zora is expected to debut at Detroit Auto Show in January. The mid-engine Corvette has been one of the longest running red herrings in the history of the modern automobile. As every successive generation of Corvette has been set to debut, the mid-engine rumors always come swirling back. This has been the case since the father of the mid-engine Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov, raced Corvettes back in the 60s. Of course, those rumors have always been inflated by General Motors continual concepts and design theories involving mid- and rear-engine sports cars. Well, the mid-engine Zora Corvette is no longer a fan theory. It s the real deal, and it s fast approaching, with all evidence pointing towards a reveal at North American International Auto Show, held in Detroit this upcoming January. These latest renderings, done by Corvette Forum, showcase the best look yet at the impending mid-engine C8 Vette. Stylistically, the front clip is derived from the current Corvette ZR1. This jives with intel from within Chevrolet indicating this to be how the front end will look. The side profile showcases a heavily raked windshield with excellent sight lines, offering visibility that midengine sports cars are famous for. The aggressively scalloped side flanks, as outlined by a few genius forum members, will feed air into the mid-mounted engine. The rear of the car features three-dimensional tail lights, not unlike several other newly-designed Chevrolet models. A rear diffuser element, along with rear cooling grilles and a low-rise rear spoiler will efficiently control and evacuate air passing above, beneath and through the mid-engine Corvette. Of course, optimizing air flow is important, as those all-new turbocharged dual overhead cam engines will have exacting cooling requirements to achieve a potential 800 horsepower. Though, we also expect a slightly less-potent 650 horsepower variant to be available, as well. More news as well have it, folks. 10

12 A recap of those members who are running for CoB offices Hello. My name is DEBBIE SCHAFER and would appreciate your vote to serve on the Board of Directors. On a National level, I served nine years as the National Council Regional Membership Director, assisting with club renewals and trying to bring some pertinent information to you. Currently, I am serving as Sergeant At Arms, you may have seen my article in the Blue Bars magazine. Club level is equally important to me and has a more personal touch because you are Home to me. I honestly love working with all of you, being part of the decision making and viewing all sides. Serving on the Board has helped me "come out of my shell" and interact more. I have hosted COB dinner dances, hospitality during our club breaks and assisted with the pizza party. I'd love to hear from all of you as we start plans for the 2019 New Year. Thank you and "Stay Warm!" JIM DECKER FELLOW COB MEMBERS, PLEASE CONSIDER THIS MY ANNOUNCEMENT TO RUN FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF OUR CLUB. During this time, I have fostered a strong relationship with our sponsor Paddock Chevrolet, relocating the Meet and Greet & Caravan to their dealership and establishing the VIP discount program giving COB members valuable sales and service benefits. I have also successfully urged the Board of Directors to include the topics of their meetings in the member s only section of the Web site to give the membership insight of our meetings. 15 Mystery Cruise September 30, 2018 was a good day for a Corvettes of Buffalo cruise. The weather was overcast and cool with a blustery wind. I assume some people had their heaters on in their corvettes. The roads we traveled where nice, with a few hills and winding blacktop, which the corvettes handled quite well. There was only one person that made a wrong turn and that was me, but the people behind me got me on the right track. The members enjoyed the animal farm tour that was provided for a fee. The buffet was very good, which had a nice selection of meats to choose from. The most important thing of the cruise is the camaraderie with fellow members of the Corvettes of Buffalo and friends. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and I a fellow member will run one next year. Thanks for attending. Mel Skeide Leon Kuczmarrski 15

24 On our Sunday s Fall Foliage Winery trip the day was a beautiful and sunny fall day. There were 39 members and 21 corvettes caravanning to Nobel Winery for a relaxing day of tasting wines enjoying a picnic lunch and just sitting back and looking out at the beautiful view, the colors were just starting to change but it was still a great view. Later after lunch we all drove down to the Lake Erie Grape Discovery Center, there we got to see how Welshes started and how grapes where prepared before automation. Some of us did tastings of other Wineries of the Lake Erie Wine trail; we also shopped in their large gift shop. There was an outside patio where some sat and enjoyed the warm sun on their faces having some wine or coffee. Karen Sparks somehow got the game on her cell phone and we got to see the last quarter of the game (Sad). Of course ending this great day was going to dinner at L isola D oro for Italian food and it was good. What a great day we all had and so relaxing plus to do this with our corvette family was fantastic. Mike and I want to thank all of the members, who joined us for this event, Thank you again. Mike &Lee Buccilli Grant Violino & Nancy Conroy. 24
