Theme: Bare Metal Social Meetings Social Meetings are held 11 times a year at: Wadham House, Wadham Parade Mt Waverley 7:30 pm for an 8:00 pm start. Committee Meetings Committee Meetings are held each month at: Dandenong RSL Clows Street, Dandenong, on the last Tuesday of the month. 7:30 pm for an 8:00 pm start. All members are welcome, you don t have to be on the committee to attend and be heard. EXPO 2011 ModelExpo 2011 is on the way and planning for the WSMC display is underway. Theme: Carrier Aviation The theme for our 2011 display is Carrier Aviation. The intention of the display is to highlight the changes that have taken place in carrier aviation and the diversity of operators and aircraft. Models to be displayed will include aircraft carriers and fixed and rotary wing aircraft that have seen service on them. A note to the non-ship and aircraft modellers: The committee appreciates that we don t all build subjects relevant to this theme and we will have a more broadly encompassing theme in 2012 (assuming the world hasn t ended). Models Carriers We Steve Banham s USS Wasp so far. Anyone got any other carriers to display? Aircraft Within the club we know we already have some of the carrier aviation subjects well and truly covered. There are some large gaps in the story that we d like to fill. Take a look at the following lists and see if there s anything there you either have already built, or are comfortably prepared to commit to building for the 2011 ModelExpo. Theme Pacific The Pacific theme drew an entire model to Heather s Corner this month. Quite surprising when you think of the breadth of the topic. I am as guilty as the rest as I have a Pacific Spit I could have brought in. Thanks Richard for your contribution. There s barely a month goes by where you don t bring something in for the corner. November Social Meeting The November social meeting will be on November 9th at the usual time and place. Theme Africa The theme for November is Africa. Time to dust off all your Zulu warriors, Wings Model Comp The Moorabbin Air Museum model comp, Wings, is coming up. It s on the weekend of the November and is worth a look. Mary from Brunel Hobbies will have a stand there, I ll be there with a selection of prints, I ll have some stuff on display from Lock-On models (F-111 specialist) and possibly some stuff from the upcoming Showcase Models Bushmaster release. I saw test shots of this last week and it s going to be a cracker of a kit! Modelling Tips I got a great tip from John Xigalatas this month. He uses metho to thin acrylic paints for airbrushing. I tried it and it has worked a treat. I got a superfine flat finish and the airbrush was easier to clean, too. I also discovered, though, that it doesn t appear to work so well on Citadel Raffle October saw the first round of the new-and-improved raffle. El Presidente bought up big recently on behalf of the club and we now have an entirely new selection of raffle prizes. There are some really choice prizes there now, thanks Rob! It certainly paid off as the ticket sales were way up on previous months. Yours truly won the raffle (again) this month and I took away a Tamiya 1:35 PBR Pibber. Graeme SAAF Buccaneers, Allouette IIs, Mirages, Lions, Alamein Shermans, Desert Kittyhawks, Rommel halftracks, Paris-Dakar racers, Garrett locomotives, Sopwith Camels, Meryl Streep figures, diamond mine dioramas,... you get the picture. Graeme The museum itself also has a sale of model kits and they are usually at VERY good prices. It s well worth a look just for that. And, of course, there is the model comp itself. The comp is for aircraft-related models only. They do allow things like AAA in the miscellaneous section. See the attached information on the next couple of pages. Graeme (Games Workshop) paints. Announcements from major kit makers and distributors By Aaron Skinner Published: October 22, 2010 The FSM staff visited the annual ihobby trade show in Rosemont, Ill., Thursday. A lot of the notable scale model manufacturers and distributors were on hand displaying some of their new and future releases. Here are some of the notable items. Distributor Merit International had a build up of the 1/48 scale two-seat F-5F on display, and posters marking the imminent 1/35 scale British Valentine Mk.I and Churchill Mk.IV tanks. Merit also displayed a buildup test shot of the new 1/35 scale Showcase Models Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle, including a detailed interior. Academy Airfix British stalwart had posters for the 1/48 scale de Havilland Sea Vixen prominently displayed as well as boxes for the 1/72 scale North American F-86 Sabre. They also displayed two 1/32 scale racecars, an Aston Martin DBR9 and Jaguar XKRGT3. Aoshima Korea s Academy had a built-up 1/35 scale Swedish CV9040 infantry fighting vehicle. AFV Club

4 In Scale Page 4 November 2010 Dragon & Cyber-hobby Distributed by Model Rectifier Corp., Aoshima had a 1/72 scale Japanese H-2 transfer vehicle. (It is used to carry supplies to the International Space Station. Aoshima s big announcement on the car side was two new 1/24 scale Lamborghini Countach kits. Atlantis Models You may not recognize the company s name, but many of Atlantis kits will ring a bell for baby boomers. Recently, they have picked up on several Aurora classics including the Zorro figure. I was interested to see build ups of the American bison and black bear and cubs from their Wild Nature Series.

5 In Scale Page 5 November 2010 Dragon s 1/32 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109 whet the appetite, and a poster of more to come Cyber-hobby 1/72 scale F22A, F-35, F-16, Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf 109, Bf 110, and Stuka added to the anticipation. Great Wall Hobby Dragon Models USA s booth was dominated by a 1/6 scale Panzer II kit, but they had several other things of note. Armor modelers should be thrilled by the forthcoming RSO kit from Dragon. Ship builders got a good look at the parts as well as a build up of Dragon s 1/350 scale carrier USS Independence, as well as the USS Long Beach. On the aircraft side, a build up of

6 In Scale Page 6 November 2010 At the Dragon Models USA booth, we got our first look at Great Wall Hobby s initial aircraft kit: a 1/48 scale Focke- Wulf FW 189A-2. The parts show good detail and photoetched-metal parts and canopy masks are included. Hasegawa The big item at the Hasegawa booth was build-ups and parts for the 1/35 scale escort carrier USS Gambier Bay. But the Japanese manufacturer had a bunch of cool items on display including their first 1/12 scale motorcycle (a Honda RS250RW), a 1/200 scale space shuttle with the Hubble telescope, and a 1/20 scale Nutcracker armored vehicle from the MaK universe. HobbyBoss Squadron-MMD had a few new items from HobbyBoss including a 1/72 scale 8.8cm Dora railroad gun, 1/48 scale Me 262 and F-14A, 1/32 scale Spitfire Mk.Vb, and a 1/35 scale Merkava Mk.IV.

7 In Scale Page 7 November 2010 Italeri The Italian manufacturer continues its foray into 1/48 scale armor with kits of a SdKfz 234/2 Puma and a Kfz 385 tankwagen. The latter is perfect for airfield dioramas. They also had a box for the upcoming 1/35 scale German Biber midget submarine. Kinetic Models Following up on the 1/48 scale Hawkeye and Prowler kits, disributor Steven International displayed Kinetic s forthcoming S-2 Tracker. Another interesting item was a 1/48 scale Mirage Minicraft

8 In Scale Page 8 November 2010 For airliner fans, the big story at ihobby was Minicraft s announcement of 1/144 scale Convairliners. One or two kits are planned after the company completes the KC-135 family in 1/144 scale. Moebius In addition to the first look at the imminent Battlestar Galactica kit, Moebius showed a mockup of a Cylon Raider for the new series. And fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey should be happy with the appearance of a mockup of the Clipper from the Kubrick film. For motor heads, Moebius 1/25 scale 1955 Chrylser 300C and 1953 Hudson Hornet. And, if I m not mistaken, there appeared to be a mockup of the Batcycle from The Dark Knight in the back of a display cabinet. Pegasus

9 In Scale Page 9 November 2010 This California-based company continues to expand with new science fiction kits, including War of the Worlds Martian figures from both the 1953 and 2005 movies. They also showed a build-up test shot of a figure and spaceship from the television series My Favorite Martian, as well as the creature from the 1997 movie, The Relic. They are following up the popular Apollo 27 spacecraft with a Mercury 9 launch vehicle and complex.

10 In Scale Page 10 November 2010 Revell Longtime plastic-model stalwart Revell had a lot surprises in their booth this year. For aircraft builders the most surprising is a 1/48 scale Lockheed PV-1 Ventura. Revell is relaunching the ProModeler name with two Revell Germany kits: a 1/32 scale He 111 and the much-anticipated 1/72 scale B-17. Notable winged re-releases include the 1/72 scale B-52 with X-15, and the 1/72 space shuttle with the fuel tank and

11 In Scale Page 11 November 2010 solid rocket boosters. Armor fans can look forward to a couple of 1/32 scale re-releases including the Renwal 8-inch selfpropelled howitzer in a vintage box. The big news for car modelers is a 1/12 scale 2010 Ford Mustang. New 1/25 scale kits include: a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, and a SnapTite 2010 Ford Mustang convertible. Round 2 Science fiction in the form of new kits as well as reissues continues to highlight the company s catalog, with Star Trek dominating. Itmes on display included the long-awaited AMT Romulan Bird of Prey and the Klingon Bird of Prey. Both kits have new parts to improve accuracy. I also liked the look of Polar Lights new 1/1000 scale USS Enterprise from the 2009 Star Trek movie.

12 In Scale Page 12 November 2010 Also noteworthy is the 1/25 scale TV Batmobile. Trumpeter Stevens had a few new items from Trumpeter to showoff including the 1/700 scale Sacramento-class resupply ship, and the 1/200 scale USS Arizona. Upcoming aircraft kits on display included the 1/32 scale A-4 Skyhawk and F-18F Super Hornet.
