BACKGROUND: As part of annual maintenance, the parallel arm pivots should be inspected for play. Worn pivot arm bushings/pins will result in performance issues with the ICD opener. The gradual reduction of the working angle will result in plugged or worn scrapers, reduced penetration ability and a smaller trench resulting in seed placement concerns. Pivot arm bushings that are left too long will experience severe wear that may result in the pivot arms becoming worn and damaged beyond repair. Reports of excess pivot bushing wear, resulting in loss of the operating angle, have been reported in some 3710 s. The investigation has concluded that one or more of the following factors were at issue: 1. Inconsistent manufacturing of the pivot bores 2. Undersized bushings 3. Damage to bushings during installation Bourgault has created retrofit kits that can be purchased when performing pivot arm bushing replacement. Along with the retrofit kit there are tools that can help with the removal of the bushings and installation of the bearings. A new maintenance decal is also available which indicates the new 250 hour grease interval for the pivot arm bearings. To ensure the highest level of performance the following maintenance items should be performed at the time of pivot upgrades: Coulter hub bearing pre-load should be inspected and adjusted as required Packer wheel hub bearing pre-load should be inspected and adjusted as required Cleaner/Gauge wheel bearing should be inspected and replaced as required Walking axle pivot bearings inspected for damage or any inward migration Walking axle bearing seals inspected for damage and replaced as required Inspect and replace worn coulters Inspect and replace any worn or damaged scraper components Re-install and adjust scrapers as required for optimum performance CORRECTIVE ACTION: All 3710 parallel arm pivot bushings should be inspected seasonally for wear. It is strongly recommended that the pivot arm bushings be inspected prior to the next season of use. It is recommended that parallel arm pivot bushings showing ¼ of side to side movement, as measured at the top of the disc when in the raised position, be repaired to avoid potential performance problems. o The wear spec has been reduced as movement greater than ¼ greatly affects seed placement. If re-work is required, reference the table on page 2, for information on the needle bearing retrofit kits. o Please note that due to the potential variability in the machined bores, the needle bearing and greaseable pin design used on 3720 s is being utilized given it is the most effective solution. 3 TSB # Page 3 of 5 IMPORTANT NOTE: WHEN MEASURING THE SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT BE AWARE THAT ANY PLAY IN THE COULTER HUB BEARINGS WILL ADD TO THE TOTAL MOVEMENT SEEN AT THE DISC. IF REQUIRED TIGHTEN THE COULTER HUB BEARINGS AND RE-MEASURE THE SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT. Measure the side to side movement -at the top of the disc (12 o clock position) when in the raised position zerk shields to be installed on the lower/bottom two pivots. The shields will protect the zerks from the straw and premature wear opener showing 4 greaseable pin locations
