2 ATLAS: truck wash automatic rollover Atlas is a highly capable truck wash automatic rollover designed for heavy duty work. Typical customers are those requiring high washing quality and large washing volumes. The Atlas rollover line was launched in 1994 : today, over 100 machines are operational in countries all over Europe : Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc., constantly reinforcing their reputation as highly reliable machines. A guarantee of quality Like all RYKO products, Atlas series machines are painstakingly crafted in each phase of their manufacturing process, both in terms of sheet metal treatment and in the very selection of the materials. Although it is not fully assembled, the system is tested simulating an actual washing operation. Treatments To prevent the onset of rust, the sheet steel rust structure and rails are worked and subsequently subjected to hot galvanization. Painting takes place on epoxy priming. The embossed appearance allows to dissimulate esthetic imperfection due to the galvanization process. RYKO guarantees the system against through rust for seven years. Materials All components used are of best quality. The magnetic ( proximity ) sensors used have large diameter (30 mm ) and thus are less sensitive to interference and voltage spikes. The sliding guides for the vertical brushes, the most readily subject to wear, are made of stainless steel. Lifting chains are nickel plated or made of stainless steels as are the wires. Bearings are sealed (2rs ). 2

3 Technology Washing systems for commercial vehicles must be able to accomodate the most disparate range of shapes and sizes. Hence brush control and motion is essential. To obtain the best possible operating precision, all actuators are electric. The horizontal brush is controlled by four highly accurate watt-metric detectors: these are the very heart of the machine. The use of watt-metric detectors, instead of traditional current detectors, makes for extremely accurate control. The vertical brushes, independent from each other, slide along two inclined guides made of stainless steel section bars by means of eight-wheel carriages. The control panel is run by a Japanese p.l.c. and it allows the use of different wash programs. The system is actuated through two direct-drive gear motor sets. In addition to four different wash programs supplied with the machine, upon request the system can be configured for different requirements : tanker truck wash, washing only the tractor, washing specially shaped bodies. 3

4 General characteristics Movable portal structure made of sheet steel, worked and subsequently hot galvanized and painted. Actuation comprising two gear motor sets housed at the base of the system, with direct drive. All parts are assembled for ease of maintenance and servicing. Different safety systems stop the plant in case of need. The plant slides along two hot galvanized rails, anchored to the ground. It is delivered with antirollover plates to be mounted upon installation. The electrical panel is housed in a waterproof upright and fitted with master cutout switch.the operating logic is implemented through a programmable controller ( p.l.c. ) housed in the panel. On the panel door, two indicator lights signal the presence of power supply voltage and the activation of the magneto-thermal cutoff trips. All electrical wires are number in accordance with the electrical diagram supplied with the machine. Commands are transmitted through a boxed control keypad.. The washing operation is performed by three cylindrical brushes ( two vertical and one horizontal ). Water and detergent are dispensed through hot galvanized pipes. The detergent is dispensed in the proper proportions by a membrane metering pump. The system has fully electric operation ; compressed air is required only to purge the pipelines. For safety purposes, the system is fitted with a buzzer to warn that its operation is about to start. The vertical brushes Vertcal brush carriage They are mounted on independent carriages traveling along two stainless inclined guides. Actuation is electric, through two gear motor sets with chain drive. The carriage runs on eight vulcaniized rubber wheels with a system of cams to adjust play on the guide. Motion is transmitted by means of a freewheel that drives to open, whereas in closure the brush is driven by gravity. The brush is controlled by means of magnety proximity sensors and current sensors. Both carriage and guide can oscillate to allow the brush in turn to oscillate in any direction. The two guides, mounted on supports with bearings, are fastened to the structure with safety wires, to prevent them from falling to the ground if the support should fail. The horizontal brush This is the most critical brush to control, given the widely different shapes presented by commercial vehicles to be washed. The brush slides along two fall - preventing guides located on the sides, allowing up-down motion. To reduce stresses, a counterweight is fitted, to slide inside an upright. Actuation is obtained by means of a gear motor set with chain drive and wires. For effective control the pressure of the brush against the vehicle, four ( watt-metric ) power sensors are used : they can accurately measure 4

5 four different levels of pressure and to command, depending on the activated level : level 1 : stop brush descent level 2 : lifting level 3 : stop translation level 4 : invert direction of travel The programs The horizontal brush can be excluded altogether in case of mulfunction. Atlas has several wash programs available to be selected by the operator with a selector switch. The machine is delivered complete with four programs : program 0: for washing single-shape vehicles ( buses, small trucks and vans ) program 1: for washing light vehicles ( delivery vans ) program 2: for washing TIRs ( large trucks ) program 3: To wash tractor -trailer trucks other programs are available on request, for instance : tanker truckwash ( which can be combined with shaped brushes ) single pass ( washes a vehicle in one direction and another in the oppposite direction ) driver s cab (washes only the cab ) trucks ( for vehicles with rear box body ) special shape (vehicles with roof-mounted ladders ) Ryko is also able to develop programs for specific requirements. The standard work cycle comprises two passes ; the operator starts the machine which, after the starting buzzer, starts operating. The brushes begin to rotate and the system begins operations. Shampoo and water are dispensed onto the vehicle. During the washing phases, if the horizontal brush meets excessive resistance against the vehicle, the machine moves back and the brush is raised to avoid the obstacle ( as in the case of spoilers ). At the end of the first pass, when the horizontal brush is at the rear of the vehicle, the system moves back until the brush rests against the vehicle and subsequently washes it. This assures washing quality even on the rear, 5

6 DRIVE-THROUGH Program Special program, especially designed to speed up the washing time of the vehicles. This program makes use of two traffic lights: the first one is installed in the metal frame of the equipment and the second one (on polt) is at a distance of about 20 metres from the equipment (in the vehicles exit direction). The working cycle, to be selected by a button or a switch, is as follows: When the first traffic light is GREEN, the vehicle advances towards the equipment until the light becomes RED. In this moment the vehicle stops. The equipment starts its working cycle when the vehicle is stopped. Side Brushes stay in the position of maximum opening and the top brush (from the maximum height) comes down until it reaches the minimum height from the floor. Then, the equipment advances toward the truck and the top brush starts to wash the front of the truck until this brush reaches the maximum height. When the top brush is at the maximum height, the second traffic light (on polt) becomes GREEN and the truck slowly advances, in order to be washed by vertical brushes (in the mean time they were closed on the sides) The truck advances again untill the second traffic light (on polt) becomes RED. The top brush comes down and washes the rear of the vehicle (during this operation the vehicle is stopped). At the end of this operation, the second traffic light becomes GREEN and the vehicle can go away from the equipment. When the working cycle is finished, the equipment comes back at the beginning of the tracks and the first traffic light (installed in the metal frame of the equipment) becomes GREEN. 6

7 Work cycle notoriously one of the dirtiest parts. Upon completion of the first part, the system stops, inverts the direction of rotation n of the brushes and executes the return back to the initial position. 7

9 Underchassis Wash Program It is a fixed nozzle device, used to wash the chassis and the fenders. It consists of: N.1 Group of 22 fixed nozzles, placed under the floor, gauged and movable. They are tied to two stainless steel tubes and covered by a heavy holed metal plate, in order to grant the washing of the vehicle s frame. N.1 Water supply pump 18,5 kw - 22 bar l/min. N.1 Electric control board N.2 Photocells used to start automatically the device, when the presence of the vehicle is detected. It is recommmended to install on the pump supply hoses a special filter element to grant the lasting of the pump. In case of pump setting with tank outside the floor, it will be necessary to install a detect electro- 9

10 HIGH PRESSURE SIDE SYSTEM RYKO Italia High Pressure Side system serves to improve the brush wash equipment and allows to intervene with effectiveness in the outside part of the frame that otherwise should be treated by hand with high pressure washers. Our system is equipped with two rotating nozzles working on uniform way on the previously described zone, which is the most difficult one to clean with the automatic washing systems. The pump set is provided with: Ceramic piston pump Three Phase Electric Motor kw Water pump safety device in case of no water feeding Automatic adjustment/ by pass valve Over range pressure safety valve Electric box with low voltage auxiliary device Presetting for remote control device The system distributes 80 liters per minute - 70 bars pressure (cold water), with a three-phase electric motor kw. Upper high impact : The high pressure side system can be supplied with a high impact system to clean the upper side of the truck. The system is equipped with a 18.5 kw, 22 bars- 250 l/min pump. To be supplied by the customer: Pump set cabinet. In case the customer does not have a good impact water source to grant the correct feeding of the pump set, a water holding tank is required (about 2000 liters). In this case the pump set will be equipped with a further self-feeding centrifuge pump parallel to the piston pump. 10
