3 TECHNICAL OVERVIEW SYSTEM THEORY & OPERATION 1. COMPRESSOR The compressor operates as the pump of the system to keep the refrigerant circulating and to increase the refrigerant s pressure. All compressors have two sides: Suction & Discharge. The refrigerant is drawn into the compressor s suction side, as a cold - low pressure vapor, and is compressed thus raising the refrigerant pressure and temperature. The high pressure - high temperature vapor refrigerant is then pumped out the compressor discharge side to the condenser. 2. CONDENSER The condenser consists of a refrigerant coil mounted in a series of thin cooling fins. The high pressure - vapor refrigerant enters at the top of the condenser and flows through its coils. The outside airflow across the condenser fins causes the heat to be transferred to the cooler outside air. As the heat is transferred, the refrigerant changes to a warm high-pressure liquid. The high-pressure, liquid refrigerant flows from the condenser through the liquid line and on toward the receiver drier. 3. RECEIVER DRIER The receiver drier, (sometimes referred to as a filter drier) receives the refrigerant from the condenser and performs three functions. First, the receiver drier acts as a storage tank and holds the liquid refrigerant until it is required by the evaporator. Second, the receiver drier acts as a filter trapping any solid material, which could cause restrictions and freeze up the system. Third, the receiver drier absorbs moisture and dries the refrigerant by using XH-7 desiccant. ACCUMULATOR In an Orifice Tube / Accumulator System, the accumulator replaces the receiver drier. It is mounted on the low side of the system and basically functions the same as a receiver drier. It traps liquid refrigerant, which could be harmful to the compressor, and allows only refrigerant vapor to continue. The Accumulator also removes moisture from the refrigerant. 4. EXPANSION VALVE The expansion valve receives the liquid refrigerant from the receiver drier and controls the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. A thermostatically controlled sensor, within the expansion valve body, controls the open and closed position of a small orifice, which the refrigerant passes through. As the refrigerant passes through the small orifice the warm high pressure, liquid refrigerant changes to a cold low-pressure atomized liquid. The opening and closing of the expansion valve orifice is controlled by the thermostatic sensor, which senses the heat load of the evaporator. ORIFICE TUBE In an Orifice Tube / Accumulator System the orifice tube replaces the expansion valve. The orifice tube creates the necessary pressure drop by metering a steady flow of refrigerant into the evaporator while the compressor is operating. 5. EVAPORATOR The evaporator receives the refrigerant from the expansion valve/orifice tube as a low pressure, cold atomized liquid. As this cold refrigerant passes through the evaporator coils, heat moves from the warm air inside the passenger compartment into the cooler refrigerant. When the liquid refrigerant receives enough heat, a change of state occurs. The refrigerant changes from a low pressure atomized liquid into a low pressure vapor. 6. SUCTION LE As the refrigerant leaves the evaporator it passes through the upper portion of the block type expansion valve where a temperature reading is taken by a thermostatic sensor. The opening and closing of the bottom of the valve is controlled thermostatically by how cold the refrigerant is as it passes through the top of the valve. The refrigerant then returns to the compressor suction side as a cool- low-pressure vapor where the cycle starts over again. 3

4 APPLICATION SECTION The application section is laid out alphabetically by truck manufacturer. The catalog covers all of the major truck manufacturers and several OE Off-Road manufacturers. Each truck manufacturer is presented in the same format throughout the application section. Each section starts with the product information displayed in alphabetical order based on the product group. For example, Blower Motors come first followed by Blower Relays, Blower Resistors, Blower Switches and Blower Wheels. The next product group would be Clutches with T/CCI, York Style being first followed by Sanden then Seltec. Every Product Group has the same layout in its own section. Within each vehicle manufacturer s product group, the application information is listed by year, make, and model. Each line of application contains OEM part numbers or part numbers that are recognized within the industry. The page number listed is the page where a picture of the part can be seen. The application section can provide valuable information to identify the type of a/c system or parts that were installed on a given vehicle. Application Page 4

5 COMPRESSORS There are many different makes of compressors used in our marketplace. Regardless of the manufacturer and design, all compressors operate as the pump to keep the refrigerant circulating and to increase the refrigerant s pressure. The two basic types of compressors are the reciprocating, upright type like the T/CCI Style or the rotary type like a Sanden, Seltec, Denso or GM. Our catalog identifies the different types of compressors and manufacturers. They are listed below. 1. SANDEN Standard & Super Heavy Duty Compressors 2. T/CCI STYLE Upright Piston Style Compressors 3. VALEO Rotary Compressors 4. DENSO Freightliner and Off-Road Compressors 5. GM Bus and Off-Road Applications The three most popular types of compressors in the Heavy Duty Aftermarket are the Sanden Standard models, Sanden Super Heavy Duty and T/CCI compressors. Sanden Compressors have been the predominant compressor chosen by all of the OE manufacturers for the past 15 years. Most of the OE s started using the Super Heavy Duty compressor on their 2008 production lines due to the upgrades in the design. The Upright compressors was installed as the First Fit compressor before 2002 on most trucks. 5

Locate the Identification Tag on the compressor body - the Model No. found in the upper right corner is the Sanden Part Number needed. 2. Refer to the chart. The chart is listed in ascending order by the Sanden part numbers along with our corresponding number and the compressors characteristics or specifications. 3. Verify the compressor using the visual photo section. Part numbers are listed by our part number in ascending order Refrigerant: The Sanden Part Number determines if it s an OE model or Aftermarket model. Sanden is the manufacturer of both models. 11 Thermal Fuse in Clutch Coil SUPER HEAVY DUTY COMPRESSOR (SHD) THERMAL FUSE DESIGN Placed inside the clutch coil to sensor high heat temperature. Function: As the fuse senses extreme heat from clutch slippage, the thermal fuse breaks open. With the open fuse, it will not allow the electrical current to flow to the clutch coil. This function disengages the clutch armature from the clutch pulley and allows the clutch pulley to spin freely acting as an idler pulley. The thermal fuse prevents the loss of the accessory drive belt. The thermal fuse can t be reset or replaced after breaking open. The compressor must be replaced and normal maintenance to the system must be performed. Position of Thermal Fuse is located in the Clutch Coil. 14 A/C CLUTCHES The Clutch section provides product information for clutches on the following compressors: Ford, Sanden, Seltec/Valeo and York style compressors. The Table of Contents page, provides detailed information on the complete product offering as well as the basic information that is needed when identifying a clutch assembly. The Clutch Section is divided into two sections, Specifications and Illustrations Section. Key Questions to Ask When Trying to Identify a Clutch: 1. What type of compressor does the clutch fit: Upright or Rotary 2. If it is an upright type (York style), go to the specification chart and use the identification chart. 3. If it is a rotary, identify if it is a (1)Sanden, (2) Seltec/Valeo (TAMA) type or (3) other type. 4. If it is a Sanden, you must have the four digit part number off the label on the compressor due to the different variations of internal clutch designs. The clutch part number is listed along side the compressor part number in the Sanden compressor chart. 5. If it is a Seltec, go to the Seltec clutch identification page and use the identification chart. 16 EXPANSION VALVES There are many different makes of expansion valves used on today s systems. Regardless of the manufacturer and design, all TXV s are located at the evaporator inlet and controls the flow of refrigerant entering the evaporator based on the cooling load or the evaporator s temperature. The three basic types of expansion valves are the Block Type, Externally Equalized, and Internally Equalized. Never install o-rings dry. ORIFICE TUBES Orifice tubes consist of a filter screen to remove contaminants, and it s a calibrated tube to meter refrigerant flow. The orifice tube is usually mounted in the inlet side of the evaporator inlet tube. The different variations of orifice tubes are based on the size of the opening or orifice. 18 RECEIVER DRIERS Basic Information - Receiver Driers, Accumulators and In-Line Filters are canisters used to filter debris and remove moisture to protect the a/c system. Various inlet and outlet fitting types and sizes are used. Many also have system protection devices, moisture indicators, charge ports, sight glass, fuse plugs, high pressure relief valves, mounting brackets depending on the requirements from the original equipment manufacturer. Tight Specs on Slim-line Design OE Charge Port with Proper O ring Receiver Driers are usually located on the high side of the a/c system before the expansion valve. The receiver drier receives liquid refrigerant from the condenser, stores it, filters out contaminates from the a/c system, and removes moisture. 20 CONDENSERS The condenser consists of a refrigerant coil mounted in a series of thin cooling fins. The high pressure - vapor refrigerant enters at the top of the condenser and flows through its coils. The outside airflow across the condenser fins causes the heat to be transferred to the cooler outside air. As the heat is transferred, the refrigerant changes to a warm - high pressure liquild. The high pressure, liquid refrigerant flows from the condenser through the liquid line and on toward the receiver drier. The condenser changes the state of the refrigerant from a vapor to a liquid by the removal of heat energy. "Old Style" Tube and Fin Condensers have large tubes for refrigerant flow. This type of condenser can be flushed if it becomes contaminated with solid debris. "New Style" Parallel Flow Condensers have flat tubes with very small passages for refrigerant flow. This type of condenser cannot be flushed and must be replaced if it becomes contaminated with solid debris. 20
