1 Section V: Table of Contents Basic Evaporator Information The A/C Evaporator is located on the low pressure side of the a/c system. It is usually mounted inside the cab under the dash panel. The evaporator receives the refrigerant from an expansion valve or orifice tube as low pressure liquid. As the refrigerant passes through the coils, a change occurs and the refrigerant becomes a low pressure vapor. Housed with the evaporator is the blower motor; which draws the warm air from the cab over the evaporator and then blows or circulates the cooled air inside the cab. 2 Section V: Specifications Chart The evaporator s function is exactly the opposite of the A/C condenser. It is the last major component which the refrigerant passes through before completing its cycle. Upon receiving low pressure, low temperature liquid refrigerant from the expansion valve or orifice tube in the form of an atomized spray, the evaporator then boils (or vaporizes) the refrigerant (by means of drawn warm air blown across the fins by a fan motor) into a low pressure, low temperature vapor to be pumped into the inlet (suction) side of the compressor. The most common failure of the evaporator is a leak in the lower section, normally created by moisture in the system. The coil s fin area must also be free of dirt, debris, and/or foreign material. Carefully remove debris by using an air hose, and check for a clogged evaporator filter when servicing the vehicle s A/C system.
