6 RUTS RUTS recaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "R B" and "ST BT R-TSR" : The Supplemental Restraint System such as R B and ST BT R-TSR, used along with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain types of collision. nformation necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service anual. WR: To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by an authorized SS/T dealer. mproper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS can lead to personal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. or removal of Spiral able and ir Bag odule, see the SRS section. o not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this Service anual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness connectors. RUTS W US WR TS (R R TR) RS WR: When working near the irbag iagnosis Sensor Unit or other irbag System sensors with the gnition or engine running, T use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer. eavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing serious injury. When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the gnition, disconnect the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service. n Board iagnosis (B) System of ngine : The has an on board diagnostic system. t will light up the malfunction indicator lamp () to warn the driver of a malfunction causing emission deterioration. UT: Be sure to turn the ignition switch and disconnect the negative battery cable before any repair or inspection work. The open/short circuit of related switches, sensors, solenoid valves, etc. will cause the to light up. Be sure to connect and lock the connectors securely after work. loose (unlocked) connector will cause the to light up due to the open circuit. (Be sure the connector is free from water, grease, dirt, bent terminals, etc.) ertain systems and components, especially those related to B, may use a new style slide-locking type harness connector. or description and how to disconnect, refer to -35, "escription". Be sure to route and secure the harnesses properly after work. The interference of the harness with a bracket, etc. may cause the to light up due to the short circuit. Be sure to erase the unnecessary malfunction information (repairs completed) from the before returning the vehicle to the customer. recaution lways use a 12 volt battery as power source. o not attempt to disconnect battery cables while engine is running. Before connecting or disconnecting the harness connector, turn ignition switch and disconnect negative battery cable. ailure to do so may damage the because battery voltage is applied to even if ignition switch is turned. Before removing parts, turn ignition switch and then disconnect negative battery cable. : S289-6

7 RUTS o not disassemble. f a battery cable is disconnected, the memory will return to the value. The will now start to self-control at its initial value. Thus, the engine operation can vary slightly in this case. owever, this is not an indication of a malfunction. o not replace parts because of a slight variation. f the battery is disconnected, the following emission-related diagnostic information will be lost within 24 hours. - iagnostic trouble codes - 1st trip diagnostic trouble codes - reeze frame data - 1st trip freeze frame data - Test values When connecting harness connector (1), fasten (B) it securely with a lever as far as it will go as shown in the figure. - (2) - oosen () B9222 When connecting or disconnecting pin connectors into or from, take care not to damage pin terminals (bend or break). ake sure that there are not any bends or breaks on pin terminal, when connecting pin connectors. Securely connect harness connectors. poor connection can cause an extremely high (surge) voltage to develop in coil and condenser, thus resulting in damage to s. eep engine control system harness at least 10 cm (4 in) away from adjacent harness, to prevent engine control system malfunctions due to receiving external noise, degraded operation of s, etc. eep engine control system parts and harness dry. Before replacing, perform Terminals and Reference Value inspection and make sure functions properly. Refer to -45, " Terminal and Reference Value". andle mass air flow sensor carefully to avoid damage. o not disassemble mass air flow sensor. o not clean mass air flow sensor with any type of detergent. o not disassemble electric throttle control actuator. ven a slight leak in the air intake system can cause serious incidents. The controls the length of time the valve remains open (injection pulse duration). The amount of fuel injected is a program value in the memory. The program value is preset by engine operating conditions. These conditions are determined by input signals (for engine speed and intake air) from both the camshaft position sensor and the mass air flow sensor. VRUS U T RS/RS ST n addition, the amount of fuel injected is compensated to improve engine performance under various operating conditions as listed below. <uel increase> uring warm-up When starting the engine uring acceleration ot-engine operation igh-load, high-speed operation <uel decrease> uring deceleration uring high engine speed operation XTUR RT B TR (S TR) BB2953 The mixture ratio feedback system provides the best air-fuel mixture ratio for driveability and emission control. The three way catalyst can then better reduce, and x emissions. This system uses a heated oxygen sensor 1 in the exhaust manifold to monitor whether the engine operation is rich or lean. The adjusts the injection pulse width according to the sensor voltage signal. or more information about the heated oxygen sensor 1, refer to -87, "omponent escription". This maintains the mixture ratio within the range of stoichiometric (ideal air-fuel mixture). This stage is referred to as the closed loop control condition. pen oop ontrol The open loop system condition refers to when the detects any of the following conditions. eedback control stops in order to maintain stabilized fuel combustion. -13

This feedback signal is then sent to the. The controls the basic mixture ratio as close to the theoretical mixture ratio as possible. owever, the basic mixture ratio is not necessarily controlled as originally designed. Both manufacturing differences (i.e., mass air flow sensor hot film) and characteristic changes during operation (i.e., fuel injector clogging) directly affect mixture ratio. ccordingly, the difference between the basic and theoretical mixture ratios is monitored in this system. This is then computed in terms of injection pulse duration to automatically compensate for the difference between the two ratios. uel trim refers to the feedback compensation value compared against the basic injection duration. uel trim includes short term fuel trim and long term fuel trim. Short term fuel trim is the short-term fuel compensation used to maintain the mixture ratio at its theoretical value. The signal from the heated oxygen sensor 1 indicates whether the mixture ratio is R or compared to the theoretical value. The signal then triggers a reduction in fuel volume if the mixture ratio is rich, and an increase in fuel volume if it is lean. ong term fuel trim is overall fuel compensation carried out long-term to compensate for continual deviation of the short term fuel trim from the central value. Such deviation will occur due to individual engine differences, wear over time and changes in the usage environment. U T T Two types of systems are used. S337W Sequential ultiport uel njection System uel is injected into each cylinder during each engine cycle according to the firing order. This system is used when the engine is running. Simultaneous ultiport uel njection System uel is injected simultaneously into all four cylinders twice each engine cycle. n other words, pulse signals of the same width are simultaneously transmitted from the. The four fuel injectors will then receive the signals two times for each engine cycle. This system is used when the engine is being started and/or if the fail-safe system (U) is operating. U SUT- uel to each cylinder is cut off during deceleration or operation of the engine at excessively high speeds. istributor gnition () System UT/UTUT S RT :
