1 UPG1000 & Windshield. Manual Short System Description: Photo 1. Complete UPG1000. The full UPG1000 system comes in three main parts. The actual UPG1000 gauge, the Control Box and pedestal and the wind shield (for extreme sites). The UPG1000 (Universal Precipitation Gauge) uses gentle heating to enable it to measure snow. This heat is controlled by a CR800 logger contained in the Control Box attached to the pedestal stand. The heating mechanism is made up of two main sections; the funnel section and the internal heating. There are heater mats and four PRT100 sensors embedded in the funnel which keeps the funnel above a set temperature. Inside the base of the gauge are two sets of ceramic heaters, another PRT100 sensor and another small heater mat (attached to the brass nozzle). This is also set in the logger program to be kept above a set temperature. We send out the gauges as standard with the funnel and internal temperatures both set at a default 3oC in the logger program. This can be changed in the program to fine tune an installation (please contact us for help with this is needed). The gauge outputs an industry standard tipping bucket contact closure pulse output. This equates to 0.1mm of precipitation.

5 Unpack pedestal from crate 2 and fit to your concrete base using the three bolts supplied (Photo 3 & Photo 5). Use pedestal base to mark out hole locations. Put the power supply away for installation later. Photo 5.

6 Next, unpack the top plate and two cross arms from crate 3. Place on the top of the pedestal and fit the cross arms to the plate (as shown in Photo 6). Note: The plate is marked with TOP, FACE A and FACE B. This matches up to the cross arms that are marked FACE A and FACE B. Make sure the cross arms are fitted on the right sides. Also measure the overhang of each arm and make sure they are equal. Note: The top plate will line up with the drain holes once the gauge is attached. Photo 6. Top Plate.

7 Unpack the UPG1000 from crate 1 and remove the funnel (by removing the three nuts). Wire the base by inserting the large power cable through the large gland and the smaller grey output cable through the small gland as shown in photo 7. Wire are shown in photo 8 and wiring notes. 10 Now, fit the base of the gauge to the top plate using the bolts supplied (Photos 11 and 12). Make sure the gauge is level using the black adjusters (photo 12) and the fitted spirit level. Note: It is advised to check that the gauge is level at the end using a large spirit level across the top of the gauge funnel. Photo 11. Fitting the base. Photo 12. Fitting the base.

11 Fit the funnel to the base, this will also act as projection for when you fit the sides of the wind shield. Photo 13.

12 There two types of side panels, four fixed panels and four removable panels. The fixed panels are marked with numbers; match these numbers with the ones on the end of the cross arms until all four sides are fitted (Photo 14). Photo 14.

13 When the fixed panels are all attached it should look like Photo 15. Photo 15. The remaining four panels have brackets with slots in, these slots fit under the black hand wheels or M6 nuts and washers. The brackets have letters on them; line these up with the letters on the fixed panels (Photo 16). Photo 16.

14 When all four removable panels are fitted it should look like Photo 17. Photo 17. There are four metal guy ropes supplied, these can be fitted from the corners or wrapped around the cross arms depending on the local ground and site conditions. One end of the guy rope is left unterminated so you can shorten as required. Use three wire rope grips on each guy rope (Photo 18). Photo 18.

15 Now that the gauge and shield are all assembled, we need to work on the Control Box attached to the pedestal. The gauge contact closure output is connected to the on-board control data logger (for our own test use), disconnect the wire between DIN rail connectors 11 and 12 and the logger. Then connect your contact closure cable from your logging system to 11 and 12 on the DIN rail (Photo 19). Photo 19.

17 Fit the Power supply as in the DRP-480S-24 Manual then fit the supplied fuse (to the fuse holder above DIN connector 12) and turn the CH100 on (This will start the whole system). Photo 20.
