4 D Or'ne of the most important properties monitored throughout the drilling operation is the mud density. The OFI mud balance makes the determination of mud density more accurate and easier than ever. The OFI mud balance determines the hydrostatic gradient (pounds per square inch per thousand feet of depth), weight (pounds per gallon or pounds per cubic foot) and specific gravity (grams per liter or kilograms per cubic meter) of various drilling mud samples. Both the metal and the plastic mud balance are designed to eliminate the need for re-calibration. The plastic balance is imprinted with four density related scales: Ib/gal, kg/m 3, Ib/ft 3, and Ib/in 2 /1000 ft. of depth. The metal balance has an enlarged scale, molded on top of the arm for clear, accurate reading. This balance has two scales: Ib/gal and specific gravity. Other features of the OFI metal balance are a large 200 cc sample cup, an anodized aluminum beam for additional corrosion resistance, a stainless steel rider and stainless steel, heat-treated knife edge. Each balance can be readily transported in a light weight plastic carrying case fitted for it's use and storage. Although similar in operation to the conventional mud balance, this balance allows for the slurry sample to be placed in a fixed volume sample cup under pressure. A problem in determining the density measurement of fluids is that often these fluids have a considerable amount of air entrained. This air volume can be decreased to a negligible quantity by pressurizing the sample cup which will give more accurate readings. 6 I he Marsh Funnel viscometer has been used for many years to obtain an indication of the relative viscosity of the drilling fluid. The OFI marsh funnel is molded from a tough, durable plastic that resists breaking or cracking. A brass orifice assures consistency in all readings. Тоlo be used with the OFI Marsh Funnel viscometer. The OFI measuring cup is graduated in fluid ounces and cubic centimeters. Sizes available include a redesigned 1000 ml plastic cup as well as 500 ml and 1000 ml stainless steel containers. 7 D city lister [ I he OFITE combination EP (extreme pressure) and Lubricity Tester is a high quality instrument designed to permit the testing and evaluation of various types and qualities of drilling fluids and lubricating additives by simulating the rotational speed of the drill pipe and the pressure it exerts against the borehole. Power requirements for the OFITE EP/Lubricity Tester are 10 Amps at 115 Volts AC and 50/60 Hz. For 230 Volt operation, use a 230 Volt stepdown transformer with 5 Amp rating. EP and Lubricity test rings and blocks are available from OFI. The following tests may be performed using this instrument: LUBRICITY (SURFACE-TO-SURFACE DRAG TEST) In this test, the fluid resistance of various lubricating additives can be readily measured. For the standard lubricity coefficient test, 150 in-pounds of force (the equivalent of 5,000 to 10,000 psi pressure on the intermediate fluid) is applied between two hardened steel surfaces, a block and a rotating ring, at 60 RPM. The wear rates of mechanical parts can be predicted by making either the block or both the block and ring of the same material as that of the part and running in the fluid expected to be used. By applying a measured force to a torque-sensitive bearing cup with the torque arm, this operation produces an indication of the film strength of the fluid being tested.

8 No OFI Viscometer, 8-Speed, Model 800, Volt "Fl Testing Equipment offers a complete line of viscometers for use in testing drilling fluid properties. Viscometers, sometimes interchangeably referred to in the industry as V-G meters or rheometers, are used to measure fluid viscosity and gel strength. The field proven 2-speed models are available as a hand crank model or one powered by a 12 Volt motor. For enhanced data collection there is the 6 speed model, which can be converted to 12 speeds with an optional gear box. This 115 Volt instrument comes with either a 50 Hz or a 60 Hz motor. OFI has increased the selection of viscometers with the addition of a new 8 speed model. The OFITE model 800 Viscometer determines the flow characteristics of oils and drilling fluids in terms of shear stress, shear rate, and time and temperature at atmospheric pressure. Speeds are easily changed with a control knob, and shear stress values are displayed on a lighted magnified dial for ease of reading. An optional cup heater is used to raise the temperature of the test sample. The model 800 is suitable for both field and laboratory use and uses a motor-driven electronic package to provide drilling fluid engineers with an extremely accurate and versatile tool. Incorporation of the latest low-power C-MOS electronic circuitry enables the Model 800 to operate from a 12 Volt battery, or standard rig power, either 115 or 230 Volt, Hz. The viscometer's motor RPM is continuously monitored and automatically adjusted by the OFI Pulse-Power electronic speed regulator to maintain a constant shear rate under varying input power and drilling fluid shear conditions. The eight precisely regulated test speeds (shear rates in RPM) are as follows: 3 (Gel), 6, 30, 60, 100, 200, 300 and 600. A stir speed is also provided. Viscometer performance is enhanced by routine calibration. A calibration kit, no , can be used on all 6-speed models, and with slight modifications on the OFI model 800. The kit includes a support bracket, spool for bob shaft, five metric weights and instructions. Components of the OFI viscometer products are interchangeable with those marketed by other manufacturers. The components of the OFITE 2-speed (Model No ) and 6-speed (Model Nos and ) viscometers are interchangeable with those of the Model 34, Model 35A and Model 35SA, respectively, manufactured by Baroid, Inc. 21 I Т, I he OFI Differential Sticking Tester Apparatus is designed to determine the "Stuck Pipe Tendency," and how effective spotting fluids might be in any given drilling fluid. Directly at the conclusion of the test the Stuck Pipe Tendency Coefficient (which takes into account the cake building capacity of the sample and the stickiness) is read. A bulk sticking coefficient is obtained by measuring the area of cake during a test. The use of a yoke accessory makes it possible to measure the sticking coefficient of a controlled cake thickness. The questions of how likely a given fluid will be to produce a "stuck" situation and how effective a given treatment would be can be determined on site. I he OFI Rig Lab incorporates all of the basic equipment needed to run daily routine mud checks in one convenient stainless steel cabinet. Included are the mud balance, Marsh funnel and measuring cup, filter press, ph paper, sand content set and all glassware, also a stop watch, a F dial-type metal thermometer, a 2-hour timer, chemicals to perform chloride ion tests and a small sink with hookups for rig water. 58 No Permeability Plugging Tester, 115 Volt I he Permeability Plugging Tester (PPT) developed by Chevron Research, is a new adaptation of the 500 ml high pressure, high temperature filter press. The instrument is used for making filtration tests on permeability plugging materials without the interference of settling on the filter medium. The filter medium can be a 1/4" thick core, a fused aluminum oxide disc, conventional filter paper, or sintered metal filters. The pressure cell is the same as that used in the Dynamic Filter Press (without the rotating assembly), but is operated upside down with the receiver on top, pressurized with nitrogen or CO 2. The cell is pressurized with hydraulic oil and can be operated to approximately 2500 psi by using hardened steel screws to secure the end caps.
