3 what are avtcs? EcoCAR 2: Plugging in to the Future is a three-year collegiate student engineering competition that focuses on vehicle integration of advanced propulsion technologies. The competition challenges 15 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu without compromising real world performance or safety. The competition s mission is a vital one: offer unparalleled hands-on experience to educate the next generation of automotive engineers to build the next wave of energy efficient vehicles. Established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors (GM), EcoCAR 2 builds on a proud 25 year history of DOE Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) that exemplify the power of public and private partnerships in providing invaluable experience and training to promising, young students. General Motors has given each EcoCAR 2 team a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in which to design and integrate advanced vehicle technology powertrains and controls in order to develop their vehicle solutions. EcoCAR 2 affords a unique combination of hands-on engineering education, experience, and exposure to world class organizations and knowledge sharing in a competitive, teamoriented environment. These factors make EcoCAR 2 the perfect preamble to future job success and a bastion for keeping the North American automotive industry competitive in the global marketplace. 4 MEET THE TEAM. The Ohio State EcoCAR 2 team is a diverse group. The team is comprised of both graduate and undergraduate students advised by experienced faculty members. Backgrounds and areas of interest vary greatly. Students join the team with many levels of experience and have an unparalleled opportunity to expand their knowledge of the automotive industry. The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research (CAR) is an interdisciplinary university research center supported by the Transportation Research Endowment Program (TREP), and by industry and government grants and contracts. CAR is at the forefront of research with innovative programs in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education in automotive systems and offers support and facilities to a number of student competition projects. The OSU AVTC team has access to the many facilities at CAR which include vibrations, fluid mechanics, combustion, battery testing, noise and acoustics laboratories, environmental chambers, and dynamometers. The facility includes a full machine shop and welding area, as well as a vehicle lift designated to EcoCAR 2. In addition, the team has access to the full service proving grounds of the Transportation Research Center, Inc. located 45 miles northwest of the university campus. 5
