2 The Future Is Knocking At Your Door... Members of the McGill University Electric Snowmobile Team continue to break new ground as they improve the design of the first ever purely electrical snowmobile and unveil their exciting new Hybrid snowmobile prototype. These one-of-a-kind prototypes will compete at the next SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge in March The goal of the competition is to design and build the most environmentally friendly snowmobile prototype, with the lowest possible emissions, energy consumption, and noise levels. So far, most competitors have limited themselves to modifying the systems of standard gasoline snowmobiles in an attempt to make them more environmentally friendly. We chose the path of true revolutionary innovation! With our improved zero-emission electric prototype and our new gas-electric series hybrid snowmobile, this year, we will be the first team to aggressively compete in both categories of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge. Beyond these prototypes, our team also strives to: Increase environmental awareness in the community and contribute to the growth of alternate modes of transportation. Promote science and technology in high schools and colleges, as well as represent McGill Engineering in the public eye. Enable our team members to acquire experience in engineering and other domains. SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge North American collegiate design competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Each team designs and builds a prototype and drives it to the edge of its capacities in a large range of tests. The goal is to engineer a snowmobile with reduced emissions and noise, combined with high energy efficiency. 2

3 The McGill University Electric Snowmobile Team Who are we? Over the years, McGill University has had tremendous success developing design teams that have competed at various SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competitions. The Electric Snowmobile Team is part of this successful line of design teams. Smart engineering design and marketing, combined with good management has enabled the Electric Snowmobile team to find key partners and make rapid progress towards the ultimate goal: design, build and demonstrate our clean, silent and highly efficient snowmobile prototypes. Our team works in close collaboration with Faculties, Departments, and Management on both McGill University campuses Downtown Campus Design Machining Programming Electric Circuitry MacDonald Campus Assemblage Aire d'essai University Resources The McGill Electric Snowmobile team can count on the support from professors within the faculty of engineering, and the expertise of the technicians from several laboratories. In addition, we are members of MUDN (McGill Under-graduate Design Network), the association of intercollegiate design teams at McGill. 3

4 Our Mission : The SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge Each year The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) organizes the "SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge". An intercollegiate design competition for undergraduate students from all over the world. The goal of the competition is to design a snowmobile that is more environmentally friendly than those currently available on the market. Pollution, noise levels, and energy consumption are all evaluated. Following the success of the McGill Electric Snowmobile prototype a new Zero-Emission category has been implemented in This year, we will be competing in both the touring (Hybrid snowmobile) and Zero-Emission (electric) categories. 5 Our Vision Designing and building our Wendigo prototype takes up a great amount of time and energy, but we have many other tasks on our mandate. We are proud to be a multidimensional team. Our commitments: Develop environmental awareness in the community by: Contributing to the growth of environmentally friendly modes of transportation, and the use of renewable energy sources Promoting education on the environmental impact of technology Organizing conferences in high schools and colleges in which we cover environmental issues pertaining to transportation Help each member attain their maximum potential, and give all members unique experience which they can use throughout their careers by: Encouraging multidiscipline interaction between students from different Departments and Faculties within McGill Giving students the opportunity to participate in all aspects of this oneof-a-kind technological project Enabling members to acquire hands on experience in engineering and other domains such as marketing and management We also encourage students from local high schools and colleges to pursue scientific and technological careers by: Organizing conferences which cover engineering and its possible careers Presenting to them real examples of science and technology in their lives The Wendigo Myth Every man who ventures alone into the wilderness should fear the spirit of the lonely places, known as Wendigo in northern Canada and by different names in other parts of the world. The cunning of Wendigo is that it knows how to keep out of your sight. As you travel, it is always behind your back. No matter how quickly you may turn, it moves faster. As you trample through bush or forest, hills or desert, with no other company but your thoughts, you become slowly aware that Wendigo follows you. You may struggle against the temptation to swing around, but at last you turn and there is nothing. You know that Wendigo has dodged behind you again, so you move quickly to surprise it. Again nothing, except perhaps the slightest movement of a bush. A breeze? an animal? or... Wendigo. 5
