2 Welcome For 50 years we ve been pushing the boundaries with research at the University of Bath, helping to tackle real-world problems with pioneering and innovative solutions. 40 years in the making Across the board we ve been mixing the best academic minds with the challenges faced by industry in order to create a unique environment where cutting edge research meets emerging market needs. Our work into advanced automotive propulsion systems has earned us a reputation for delivery that s second to none. For over 40 years, our close collaboration with some of the world s leading companies has enabled us to conduct translational research helping manufacturers to lower vehicle emissions whilst not compromising engine performance. Looking ahead, we want to capitalise on the platform we have built to deliver the next generation of applied engineering research through a new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems. Our standing and experience means we are ideally placed to lead this, helping industry to tackle future challenges, bringing jobs and investment to the regional and national economy, and nurturing future research leaders. On behalf of everyone at the University I am delighted to be supporting this project. The Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) is a new research and innovation facility for advanced propulsion systems, to deliver future generations of clean and efficient vehicles. Based at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, it will be industry led and compete on a global scale within the automotive propulsion research arena. The facility will host a range of state-of-the-art experimental research platforms to enable precise systems level investigations to be conducted including whole vehicle assessments, in particular under real world driving conditions. The facility will be designed for the future, enabling deep insights into the complex nature of transitioning to Ultra Low Emission Vehicles. Through its open innovation model, our vision will enable academics, automotive industry partners and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to conduct transformational research and have access to worldclass research infrastructure and people. This will promote greater collaboration and the sharing of expertise to advance knowledge. High growth small businesses are vital to economic growth and many of the UK's most exciting innovations are fostered by SMEs. IAAPS will offer SMEs facilities that they are currently unable to access. The creation in 2013 of the 1 billion Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) to deliver the Propulsion Nation signalled the Government s intention to drive investment in UK automotive propulsion. IAAPS supports the APC in its operation and vision. Join us in helping ensure the UK maintains and expands its global position within the automotive sector. 3 Advancing UK automotive research and innovation With a new vehicle rolling off the production line every 20 seconds and an export market that s worth nearly 35 billion, the UK automotive industry is in a strong position. However, faced with external pressures it needs to increase its competitiveness and adapt to meet the challenges ahead in order to maintain and advance this position. IAAPS will help build the UK's propulsion capacity for the future with experimental facilities that can shift to meet and exceed environmental control targets, whilst not compromising performance. This will be a national facility capable of supporting the UK's agenda to attract more investment from overseas as well as ensuring there is a constant flow of highly capable and well trained engineers through its graduate programmes. The facility will foster a collaborative working environment between researchers and industry. By doing this it will ensure that intellectual capital remains in the UK which can then be channelled back into developing products and services for international markets. Global companies can locate anywhere but IAAPS will bring them to Britain and keep them here, putting the UK in the driving seat for creating a new breed of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles BILLION Every 20 seconds a vehicle rolls off the UK production line. This makes the UK Europe s fourth largest vehicle producer. In 2014, 1.5 million cars and nearly 2.5 million engines were built by our automotive industry, which employed 800,000 and turned over 70 billion. Combined, this all adds up to an industry which added 15.5 billion to the UK economy and invests 2.4 billion in R&D and 2.1 billion in net capital. Our automotive exports account for roughly 12 per cent of the UK s total export goods and are worth 34.6 billion. 80 per cent of vehicles produced are exported to over 100 markets worldwide. 4 A unique research facility for the UK IAAPS will be truly unique in the UK, both by its structure and operation. It will rise to the challenge of conducting research on ever more complex propulsion systems. This will develop sound scientific insight into the performance and optimisation of future low carbon powertrain technologies and evaluate expected real world performance in a scientifically robust laboratory environment. This will speed up the adoption of new low carbon technologies and aid their delivery to market. IAAPS will contain new technically-advanced facilities, including: Climatic control rolling roads to evaluate and optimise complete vehicle performance in real world driving conditions. Dynamometers to lead research around the complexity of hybrid powertrain optimisation. Engine, transmission and electrical machine platforms designed as the cornerstone of transition to future Ultra Low Emission Vehicles, including electrification and autonomous vehicles. This highly specialised equipment will help deliver state-of-the-art experimental research underpinned by scientific enquiry, enabling advancements in computational predictive capabilities, validated by data that is realistic and precise. IAAPS is more than just facilities, it is being designed with people and business in mind. The open innovation and multi-party research and innovation approach is unique, promoting collaboration and sharing of ideas and enabling partners to work hand-in-hand on breakthrough technologies. SMEs will also be able to access a facility that will create opportunities to build and expand their business. IAAPS is an important initiative in support of our vision of a Propulsion Nation with world class capability and impact. 5 We already participate in a number of joint collaborative projects, and we ll be looking to work with the University of Bath s resources, including their skills, their capabilities and some of the unique assets at IAAPS. It allows us effective use of their facilities as they come online. It s the approach we ve taken here at the University of Bath and it s the principle reason why we ve been so successful in advancing automotive research. Through our Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre (PVRC), we have a solid reputation for delivery by improving the efficiency and emissions of diesel and petrol engines, and electric and hybrid systems. We have a proven track record, having delivered over 15 Innovate UK and APC funded projects with a value in excess of 5 million. We have secured over 11 million in research funding over the past five years. By aligning our work with the needs and challenges of our industrial partners, our researchers have delivered innovative solutions that address key challenges such as engine downsizing, improved fuel consumption and lower vehicle emissions. Our Ultraboost Project delivered a prototype 2 litre gasoline engine with the same performance as a 5 litre V8 engine whilst also reducing in vehicle CO 2 by more than 35 per cent. In 2015 our longstanding and continued contribution to the advancement of the UK automotive industry was formally recognised when we were announced as one of the UK s leading automotive propulsion groups, selected as the Internal Combustion Engine Systems Efficiency Spoke of the APC. This means we are formally recognised by Government and industry as a leader in advanced propulsion systems research. 6 7

6 The economic case To help calculate the potential economic benefits of IAAPS, we asked Warwick Economics for an independent view. Their findings couldn t be clearer; IAAPS will be a catalyst for sustainable economic growth. Nationally, IAAPS will stimulate 67 million in research and development between 2020 and 2025, driving an additional turnover of 800 million for the automotive sector and 221 million in additional Gross Value Added for the national accounts. They estimate IAAPS will support nearly 1,900 new jobs and safeguard thousands more, including many that may have gone outside of the UK. Through IAAPS we ll also see jobs that are more productive, in the region of 50,000 per employee. Higher wages means a more prosperous regional economy enabling greater investment in housing and services. The facility will attract millions of pounds of private sector investment from this country and abroad, and will develop the West of England s advanced engineering industry, where the region has a unique competitive advantage. It will exploit the past investments into the Bristol and Bath Science Park and the National Composite Centre. IAAPS will also be a centre for world class training and skills development by supporting new undergraduate, PhDs, Masters and Apprenticeship courses. It will be the pinnacle of a skills system, providing pathways through local education providers and addressing skills gaps within the region. Our facility will also offer a space for start-ups and future entrepreneurs to experiment, learn and deliver to the market. The window of opportunity to invest in this facility exists now.
