5 PSEC 301- PSEC 306 Energy Economics, Strategic Planning and Emerging Technologies PSEC 301 Evolving Electric Utility Business Model November 5-6 AM, 2018 Participants will learn how the electric utility business model has been evolving in the US, as well as internationally. The business model of vertically integrated electric utilities under cost-of-service regulation will be covered first. Next, the business model of the electric utility, as well as the other participants in a deregulated electricity market will be covered. Finally, the disruption of the existing electric power industry due to low-cost distributed generation and the application of information technology resulting in the formation of a potentially more dynamic, information-based and decentralized electric industry the electric power industry of the future will be covered. PSEC 302 Power Economics November 7-9, 2018 Understand how economic forces drive utility decisions. View the workings of the utility business from an economic perspective, including what makes the utility business work and how companies can meet their commitment while meeting shareholder expectations. Additional discussions include the impact of economics on plant characteristics, and economic dispatch. Hands-on exercises contrast operational decisions for plants within regulated utilities, as well as wholesale marketplace utilities. PSEC 303 Strategic Generation and Transmission Planning November 12-15, 2018 Learn more about power system economic planning by creating a long-term capacity and transmission plan. Begin by creating a load forecast that is used to perform a reliability analysis (loss of load expectation). Then develop and analyze the economic impacts of various expansion plans to produce an integrated generation and transmission plan. PSEC 305 Future Grid: Distributed Energy Resources, Microgrids, Energy Storage, Demand Response and Dynamic Pricing, and Electric Vehicles November 26-30, 2018 Get an overview of grid of the future and its main components. Section A provides an overview of the various Distributed Energy Resources (DER) types and their functions, including Distributed Generation (DG) types. Section B provides an overview of microgrids, including GE s direct experience in microgrid feasibility studies. Section C provides an overview and discussion around the technologies and applications of energy storage (ES) ranging from frequency regulation to energy arbitrage. Section D provides an overview of customer side of smart grid and DER, including demand response (DR) and dynamic pricing (DP). Section E provides an overview of electric vehicles and plug-in electric vehicles (EV/PHEV) and their grid deployment, impact evaluation, and smart charging. PSEC 306 Fundamentals of Renewale Energy Systems December 3-6, 2018 Attend a global leader s look at the comprehensive essentials of renewable energy power systems (wind and photovoltaics) and gain basic knowledge of systems engineering for planning and design of reliable and cost-effective wind and utility-scale solar power plants. Learn about the behavior and economics of power systems with substantial renewable energy generation. PSEC 304 Distributed Energy Resources: Planning for High Penetrations November 19-20, 2018 Learn how to plan for and manage a future grid with increased levels of distributed energy resources. This course covers technical, economic, and policy aspects of planning and operations, as well as offering global lessons learned from integration of high penetrations of distributed solar.
