28 CO 2 production / tonnes Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) CAP = average level amount of CO 2 to be purchased from the open market amount of CO 2 allowed without charge on RTK basis Aviation will be included in the EU ETS by 2012, for all flights arriving or departing from an EU airport The new CO2 Emission Scheme will lead to more ambitious fuel efficiency targets for airlines. 31 «Clean Sky» Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) The «Clean Sky» JTI* is an industry driven 7-year research programme plan for greener generation of European Air Transport. Its purpose is to demonstrate and validate the technological breakthroughs that are necessary to reach the environmental goals set by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE). Total budget 1.6Bn (over 7 years period) *JTI is a new instrument created by the European Commission for the 7 th Framework Programme for Research (FP7) to allow large scale and long term public-private research partnerships. 31 RAS Sustainable Aviation Symposium Wellington March 28, 2008
