1 Page 1 of 11 AXLE SHAFTS Removal (Left Side) 1. Loosen the left-hand strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by four turns. Loosen the wheel lug nuts. CAUTION: Use a socket to loosen the wheel hub retaining nut to prevent damage. 2. Loosen the wheel hub retaining nut. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Using a soft cloth to prevent damage to ball joint seat, remove lower control arm ball joint pinch bolt. See Fig. 2. CAUTION: The wheel hub retaining nut can be re-used 4 times. Mark the retaining nut to indicate that it has been removed. If retaining nut has 4 marks, replace it. 3. Remove the wheel hub retaining nut. Using a Front Hub Remover/Installer ( , T81P C) and Wheel Stud Remover ( , T83P-1104-BH), unscrew and press out the axle shaft stub from the wheel hub. See Fig On vehicles with ib5 M/T, use Axle Shaft Remover ( , ) to remove the axle shaft from the transaxle. See Fig. 4. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Close off the transaxle opening with transaxle plug. 5. On vehicles with A/T or MTX-75 M/T, use Front Drive Axle Shaft Remover ( , ) to remove the axle shaft from the transaxle. See Fig. 5. Close off the transaxle opening with transaxle plug.

The inner axle shaft joint must not be bent by more than 18 degrees and the outer CV joint must not be bent by more than 45 degrees. NOTE: Install NEW self locking suspension strut nuts and axle shaft snap rings. CAUTION: DO NOT damage the transaxle oil seal when inserting the axle shaft. In the case of the ib5 M/T, use an installation sleeve (supplied with each NEW oil seal). See Fig. 6. NOTE: Make sure the snap ring is fully engaged, by pulling on the joint

6 Page 6 of When installing axle shaft, remove the auxiliary plug from the transaxle opening and install the axle shaft and snap ring into the transaxle. 2. Using the Axle Shaft Installer ( , T97P-1175-A), install axle shaft stub into the wheel hub. See. The wheel hub retaining nut can be reused 4 times, inspect the marings on the retaining nut and install a EW wheel hub retaining nut if necessary. Install the wheel hub retaining nut but DO OT tighten. 3. Checand fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. For 2002 vehicles, see in AUTOMATIC For 2003 vehicles, see in AUTOMATIC For 2004 vehicles, see in AUTOMATIC!!!!!!!! See SPECIFICATIOS in appropriate MAUAL TRASMISSIO article. 4. Attach the lower control arm and install ball joint pinch bolt. See. Tighten ball joint pinch bolt to specification. See. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Lower the vehicle. Using a 32 mm socet wrench, tighten the axle shaft hub nut to specification. 5. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to specification. See. Tighten the left-hand strut and spring assembly to mount nuts to specification. Perform road test.

9 Page 9 of 11 C) and Wheel Stud Remover ( , T83P-1104-BH), unscrew and press out the axle shaft stub from the wheel hub. See. 4. Remove and discard the axle shaft clamp from axle shaft bracet. See. Pull out the intermediate shaft and close off the transaxle opening with transaxle plug.

11 Page 11 of Install intermediate shaft as an assembly. See. Clean the bearing surface on the bracet. Remove the auxiliary plug from the transaxle opening and insert the axle shaft and intermediate shaft assembly into the transaxle until the intermediate shaft bearing contacts the rib of the intermediate shaft bracet. See. 2. Install a EW intermediate shaft clamp and tighten nuts to specification. See. Using the Axle Shaft Installer ( , T97P-1175-A), install axle shaft stub into the wheel hub. See. 3. Install the wheel hub retaining nut but DO OT tighten at this stage. Checand fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. Attach the lower control arm and install ball joint pinch bolt. See. Tighten ball joint pinch bolt to specification. See. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Lower the vehicle. Using a 32 mm socet wrench, tighten the axle shaft hub nut to specification. 5. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to specification. See.
