1 STABILIZER SHAFT LINK Removal 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Disconnect the rear stabilizer shaft link from the strut. 3. Remove the rear stabilizer shaft link nut. 4. Remove the stabilizer shaft link (2) from the stabilizer shaft (3). See Fig. 7. Fig. 7: Removing Stabilizer Shaft Link Installation CAUTION: Use the correct fasteners in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fasteners torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. 1. Install the stabilizer shaft link (2) to the stabilizer shaft (3). 2 2. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the strut. Tighten the stabilizer shaft link to strut bolt/screw. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. 3. Lower the vehicle. STRUT ASSEMBLY Removal CAUTION: Care should be taken to avoid chipping or scratching the coating when handling the suspension coil spring. Damage to the casting can cause premature failure. 1. Remove the three strut-to-body mount nuts (1). See Fig Raise and support vehicle. 3. Remove the tire and wheel. 4. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft link from the strut. See.STABILIZER SHAFT LINK section. NOTE: The knuckle must be retained after the strut-to-knuckle bolts have been removed. Failure to observe this may cause ball joint and/or drive axle damage. 5. 4 1. Install strut into place. 2. Install the strut to knuckle bolts (2). Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. 3. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the strut. See STABILIZER SHAFT LINK section. 4. Install tire and wheel. 5. Install the three strut-to-body mount nuts. 6. Install three strut to body mount nuts. Tighten the strut to body mount nuts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. 7. Lower the vehicle. 8. Adjust the rear wheel alignment. Disassembly sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. CAUTION: Care should be taken to avoid chipping or scratching the coating when handling the suspension coil spring. Damage to the coating can cause premature failure. WARNING: Do not over compress the spring. Severe overloading may cause tool failure which could result in bodily injury. CAUTION: Align the alignment rod and the strut compressor so that the tool may open and close together. The tools will not open if the tools do not align properly. 1. Install the strut to the Strut Compressor. See SPECIAL TOOLS section. Use wing nuts to secure the tool to the mounting holes C (1) and E/K (3). Position the wide end of the adapter outboard. See Fig Install the alignment rod and the Strut Compressor upper adapter. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Install the strut to the top of the Strut Compressor. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Install the strut into the Strut Compressor upper adapter and the Alignment rod. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Close the alignment rod and the Strut Compressor upper adapter. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Install the locking pins through the holes of the alignment rod and the strut lower mounting holes. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Turn the screw (3) on the strut compressor counterclockwise to raise the strut up to the Strut Compressor upper adapter. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig Compress the spring approximately 13 mm (1/2 in.) or three to four complete turns of the operating screw. 5 9. Insert the strut rod nut socket on the nut. See SPECIAL TOOLS section. 10. Hold shaft with a T-45 Torx(R) bit. 11. Use the strut rod nut socket to remove the nut while preventing the rod from rotating with a T-45 Torx(R) bit. See SPECIAL TOOLS section. 12. Discard the strut nut. 13. Turn the operating screw (3) on the Strut Compressor clockwise to fully relieve the spring compression. See SPECIAL TOOLS section and Fig. 10. 6 WARNING: Do not over compress the spring. Severe overloading may cause tool failure which could result in bodily injury. CAUTION: Align the alignment rod and the Strut Compressor so that the tool may open and close together. The tools will not open if the tools do not align properly. 1. Install the strut to the Strut Compressor. See SPECIAL TOOLS. Use wing nuts to secure the tool to the mounting holes C and E/K. Position the wide end of the adapter outboard. See.Fig Install the alignment rod and the Strut Compressor upper adapter. 3. Install the strut to the Strut Compressor lower adapter and strut compressor upper adapter. See SPECIAL TOOLS. 4. Close the Strut Compressor lower adapter and the strut compressor upper adapter. See SPECIAL TOOLS. CAUTION: Use only one mounting pin. Position the top of the shock absorber flat against the Strut Compressor lower adapter. The shock absorber will not align correctly if the shock absorber does not lay flat against the tool. 5. Install the locking pin through the lower hole of the Strut Compressor and the lower knuckle mounting hole of the strut. See SPECIAL TOOLS. 6. Install the strut to the top of the Strut Compressor. See SPECIAL TOOLS. 7. Install the spring to the strut. Ensure to position the upper and lower spring seat correctly. 8. Install the remaining components to the strut. 9. Fully extend the strut shaft. NOTE: Align the alignment rod straight with the strut. If the alignment rod is not aligned, repeat steps 1 through 12 until the tool is straight. 10. Attach the alignment rod. See SPECIAL TOOLS. This prevents the shaft from reacting during compression. 11. Insert the alignment rod down through the top of the strut compressor and onto the shaft. See SPECIAL TOOLS. 12. Slowly turn the operating screw counterclockwise in order to compress the spring until the threaded portion of the strut shaft is through the top of the strut. 13. Insert a new strut nut on the strut rod. CAUTION: Keep the strut rod in a stationary position when you tighten the strut nut. Turning the strut rod may damage the strut. 14. 7 absorber rod to upper mount. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. 15. Insert a T-45 Torx(R) through the alignment rod. See SPECIAL TOOLS. 16. Tighten the shock absorber nut while holding the shaft with a T-45 Torx(R). See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. 17. Remove the damper rod clamp, the alignment rod and the strut rod nut socket from the strut compressor. 18. Remove the strut from the strut compressor.
