1 FRONT COVER Removal & Installation 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove drive belt. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts, and position compressor aside. Drain cooling system. Remove radiator hoses. Using Spanner Wrench (6958) with Adapter Pins (8346), remove fan and fan clutch from water pump. 2. Disconnect electrical connector to fan mounted in shroud. Remove transmission cooler line from fan shroud, and remove shroud. Disconnect heater hoses at front cover. Remove crankshaft damper bolt. Using Crankshaft Damper Removal Insert (8513) and Puller (1026), remove damper. Remove drive belt tensioner assembly. See Fig. 9. Remove front cover and gasket. 3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten front cover bolts in sequence. See Fig. 10. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. See FRONT COVER. Rotate engine clockwise until tensioner pistons are fully extended. Measure distance between tensioner housing and top of piston step ledge. See Fig. 11. 3 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Align timing mark on crankshaft damper with "TDC" mark on front cover. See Fig. 12. Ensure "V8" mark on right and left camshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock position. See Fig Remove power steering pump. Remove access plugs from right and left cylinder head to access chain guide upper bolts. See Fig. 14. Remove oil fill housing for access to right secondary chain tensioner bolt. Remove front cover. See FRONT COVER. CAUTION: Cover oil pan opening to ensure plate behind left secondary chain tensioner does not fall into pan. 3. Using adjustable pliers and Chain Tensioner Pin (8514), compress tensioner, and pin primary chain tensioner in place. See Fig. 15. Remove right and left secondary chain tensioners. See Fig. 16. CAUTION: A damaged or magnetized target wheel, located on right camshaft sprocket, could cause a no start condition. DO NOT hold camshaft target wheel while loosening or tightening right camshaft sprocket. DO NOT place target wheel near any magnetic source. CAUTION: DO NOT use force to rotate camshafts or crankshaft while timing chains are removed. Severe valve and/or piston damage could occur. 4. Remove camshaft position sensor from right cylinder head. See Fig. 17. Remove right camshaft sprocket bolt. Hold tube portion of camshaft with adjustable pliers and remove sprocket. Slowly rotate right camshaft counterclockwise 45 degrees to a neutral position (no valve load). Repeat removal procedure for left sprocket, and slowly rotate left camshaft counterclockwise 15 degrees to a neutral position. 5. Remove idler sprocket bolt, and slide idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket forward. Remove primary and secondary timing chains. Remove tensioner arms and chain guides. See Fig. 16.
