w TO- 9 FOUR-WHEEL TRAILER. General The purpose of the four-wheel trailer (see Fig. ) is to add mobility to a diesel engine-driven generator set rated at 90 kva.. Description The trailer is a compact, four-wheel vehicle with a shallow steel frame and full fenders. Enclosed battery compart- ments are centrally located on each side between the fenders. Each of these compartments can accommodate two 6-volt batteries. Top covers provide quick access to the batteries for service or replacement. A fuel tank with a usable capacity of 43 gallons (63 liters) is mounted between the frame rails at the rear. An electric fuel gage sending unit is mounted in the tank. The quantity indicating gage is located on the engine control panel of the generator set. Shallow troughs are provided on both sides of the trailer for output cable storage. The trailer is supported by two axles which are mounted to the frame by four semi-elliptical leaf springs. The rear axle is solid with internal, drum-type brakes. The front axle assembly consists of a solid axle with spindles and steering linkage and a drawbar which may be folded upward when not in use. A spring-loaded latching bracket secures the drawbar in vertical position when the trailer is parked. Steering linkage is designed to prevent damage to tie rods, etc., if the trailer is turned too sharply. COMPARTMENT COMPARTMENT May B/78 Four-Wheel Trailer Assembly Figure Page

Brakes The mechanical parking brakes are set by raising the drawbar to the vertical locked position. Mechanical linkage on the drawbar actuates a control cable which sets the brakes when the drawbar is raised and releases them when the drawbar is lowered to the towing position. The control cable connects the drawbar linkage to the rear rigging which is housed in a transverse channel attached to the frame just forward of the rear axle. This rigging actuates the brakeshoes in the wheel assemblies. B. Additional Features (I) Tires are pneumatic type with tubes, size 6:00 x 9. () All wheel bearings are roller type. (3) Red reflectors are mounted on all four corners. (4) A fire extinguisher, with mounting bracket, is furnished with each trailer. (5) Taillights on rear fenders are operated from a switch on the generator control panel. 3. Preparation for Use Upon delivery, check the unit thoroughly for shipping damage. A. Check lights and reflectors for broken glass. B. Check sheet metal for dents and deformation. C. Check pressure in all four tires. D. Check batteries for proper fluid level. E. 7 w I, TO- 9 F. Check Fuel Quantity The electric fuel gage is operational only when the generator engine is running, or when instrument panel lights are ON. To check fuel quantity when engine is stopped, turn ON panel lights. 4. Operation To connect trailer to tow vehicle: Support drawbar and pull UP on latch lever to unlatch. WARNING: EXERCISE CARE TO PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONNEL BY A FALLING DRAWBAR. CAUTION: DO NOT TOW TRAILER FASTER THAN 0 MPH. AVOID SUDDEN TURNS. A. Trailer Hookup () To attach the trailer to a tow vehicle, connect drawbar towing eye to pintle hook in a normal manner. () Safety chains may be used at the option of the user. If safety chains are used, they should be attached on opposite sides of trailer drawbar or frame, and crossed under the drawbar when routed forward to the towing vehicle to support the drawbar in the event of a breakaway. Slack should be just sufficient to permit full turns. B. Towing () Do not tow trailer faster than 0 MPH. () Avoid sudden starts, stops, and sharp turns. (3) Do not attempt turns which are tighter than the vehicle combination is capable of making freely (with- out cramping). C. Disconnect Trailer (I) Be certain to disconnect safety chains before moving towing vehicle away from trailer. () Lift drawbar toward a vertical position until latch engages securely. BE SURE DRAWBAR IS SAFELY LATCHED BEFORE RELEASING. 5. Maintenance A. Lubrication (I) General Most lubrication points, such as spring shackle bolts, tie rod ends, etc., are equipped with high-pressure lubrication fittings. Refer to Figs. 3,4, and 5 for lubrication chart, lubricants, and time intervals. May 878 Page 3

TO-l 9 () Cleanliness It is important that all grease fittings be cleaned before attaching a grease gun or applicator. Use a clean cloth to wipe dirt from fittings. (3) Grease application Place pressure gun securely on the fitting, so that there is no leakage between fitting and applicator. Apply pressure until old grease is forced out and new grease appears. This will insure that the grease cavity has been filled with clean grease and that old, contaminated grease has been forced out. Use an oil can to lubricate points such as brake linkage, etc., which are not equipped with grease fittings. A very light grease may also be used if it is preferred to lubricating oil. Remove wheels to check wheel bearing lubricant. 10 TO- 9 B. Brake Linkage Adjustment WARNING: SELECT A LEVEL SURFACE FOR BRAKE ADJUSTMENTS. BLOCK TRAILER WHEELS TO PREVENT MOVEMENT DURING ADJUSTMENT, BECAUSE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES REQUIRE THE DRAWBAR TO BE IN THE HORIZONTAL POSITION WITH BRAKES RELEASED. () Minor adjustments If the brakes do not set properly or will not hold when the drawbar is locked in the vertical position, the linkage may be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the tongue-to-bellcrank rod, at the drawbar pivot, as follows: (a) Refer to Figure 6. Lower the drawbar until it rests on its support. (b) Remove clevis pin from the drawbar tongue connection. (c) Loosen locknuts at both ends of rod. (d) Lengthen or shorten the effective (working) length of rod by turning its threaded ends into or out of the clevises. (e) Reassemble the linkage and raise the drawbar to the vertical position to test the brakes. (f) Repeat the above procedures until the brakes set and hold properly when the drawbar is raised and locked. (g) When adjustment is complete, secure the clevis pin with its cotter pin and tighten locknuts against clevises. () Major adjustments (a) Refer to Figure 6. Make sure that cable clevis is disconnected from bellcrank arm. (b) Center line of hole in drawbar tongue should be approximately inch (5.4 mm) beyond center line of drawbar pivot pin. If it is not, adjust it by loosening retaining screws and sliding it as required. Mounting holes in tongue are slotted. (c) Refer to Figure 7. If clevis locknuts on cable assembly were loosened at disassembly, turn cable clevis onto threaded stud as far as it will go and still provide some movement of locknut. Attach cable clevis to cross-shaft lever with clevis pin. (d) Make sure spring is attached properly with short hook around lever arm below the clevis, and the long hook attached to the frame through the hole provided. Spring tension should pull cross-shaft lever toward rear axle. (e) Make sure that flexible cable housing is securely attached to bracket and retained by the cable clamp in the frame. (f) Refer to Figure 6. Attach cable clevis to bellcrank arm with clevis pin. Bellcrank arms should be as close to vertical as possible. Adjust tongue-to-bellcrank rod or cable clevis to assure vertical position of bellcrank arms. This is the optimum condition to finalize brake adjustment. Page 6 May 878

TO- 9 (g) Raise drawbar to the locked position (DO NOT FORCE). Test the brakes. If brakes will not hold, or if drawbar cannot be raised to the locked position without use of excessive force, make the minor adjustments outlined in 5, B, (I) above. (h) When brakes will hold properly, make sure that ALL clevis pins are secured with cotter pins and that locknuts are tightened against ALL clevises. 13 TO- 9 C. Wheels and Tires () Wheels Wheels are two-piece, disc type. The two halves are bolted together near the rim to form the complete wheel. The wheel must be disassembled to mount or remove tire. WARNING: BE CERTAIN TO DEFLATE PNEUMATIC TIRES BEFORE REMOVING WHEEL ASSEMBLY BOLTS. () Tires Standard tires are pneumatic tires with tubes which require 60 psi (44 kpa) air pressure. D. Wheel Bearings () Check wheel bearings (a) Raise vehicle until wheels are clear of floor. (b) Grasp the top side of the tire with one hand, and the bottom with the other hand. Push at the top and pull at the bottom alternately to check for looseness in the bearings. If looseness is felt, adjust bearings. NOTE: Do not misinterpret looseness in front axle spindle bushings for wheel bearing looseness. () Adjust wheel bearings (a) Remove hub cap. The cap is not threaded. (b) Remove cotter pin and tighten slotted nut until snug (not tight). (c) Install a new cotter pin. Back nut off slightly if necessary to install pin. (d) Check the wheel again for looseness. The wheel should turn freely without noise or looseness. (e) Install hub cap. Drive the cap in place with a nonmetallic hammer. E. Batteries () Battery access Raise hinged covers on battery compartments to gain access to batteries for inspection and service. () Battery care (a) Never allow a battery, which has been removed from the trailer, to sit on concrete, ground, or metal unless proper insulation is provided. A wooden platform or board will provide sufficient insulation. (b) Maintain stored batteries in a charged condition. May 878

I I TO- 9 (c) Be sure batteries are fastened securely in the vehicle to avoid damage from vibration. (d) Maintain battery fluid at proper level. (e) Keep battery terminal posts and lead connectors clean. WARNING: NEVER ALLOW SPARKS OR OPEN FLAME NEAR THE BATTERIES. AVOID SPILLING ELECTROLYTE ON HANDS OR CLOTHING. (3) Liquid level The electrolyte in each cell should be above the plates at all times to prevent battery failure. When the electrolyte is below this level, add pure distilled water. Never use hydrant water or any water which has been in a metal container. Acid or electrolyte should never be added except by a skilled batteryman. CAUTION: NEVER ADD ANY SPECIAL BATTERY DOPES, SOLUTIONS, OR POWDERS. NOTE: It is especially important to keep the battery at full charge for cold weather operation. Add distilled water to the battery in freezing temperatures only when the engine is to operate for several hours to thoroughly mix the water and the electrolyte, or damage to the battery may result from freezing. (4) Battery cleaning If the top of the battery is dirty, it may be cleaned with a brush dipped in a solution of ammonia, or soda. (a) Disconnect cable connectors from battery posts. (b) Brighten cable terminals and post contact surfaces with a special terminal cleaning tool, or with a wire brush and steel wool. (c) Tighten filler caps. (d) Clean battery with brush and cleaning solution. (e) After foaming stops, flush off battery with clean water, then dry with rags. (f) Apply a light lubricant to terminal and reconnect battery cables. (g) An anticorrosion spray may be applied to terminal connections if desired. (h) Be sure vent holes in filler caps are not clogged. (5) Battery test Tests are made on a battery to determine the state of charge and also the condition. The results of these tests show that the battery is good, needs recharging, or must be replaced. If a battery has failed, is low in charge, or requires water frequently, the reason for the condition must be found and corrected. Page 0 May 87%

TO-l 9 Visually inspect the battery before testing, to determine if it has been damaged. The presence of moisture on the outside of the case, or low fluid level in one or more cells indicates possible battery damage (cracked case, etc.). The battery may be tested by two methods. A Battery-Starter Tester may be used to determine the bat- tery s ability to deliver current. A battery hydrometer test determines the charge condition of the battery. (a) Test with battery-starter tester Connect the battery to the tester according to instructions furnished with the instrument. Test the battery in accordance with tester instructions. If the test determines that the battery has acceptable voltage, it indicates that the battery has good output capacity and will accept a charge, if required. (b) Test with hydrometer Remove filler caps and check the specific gravity of electrolyte in each cell. If specific gravity is.30 or below, add water if necessary and charge the battery until it is fully charged. A fully charged battery will give a specific gravity reading of from.65 to.85. The specific gravity of a fully discharged battery may range from.i40 down to.0. NOTE: The battery is fully charged when all cells are gassing freely, and the specific gravity ceases to rise for three successive readings taken at hourly intervals. If the Battery-Starter Test indicated the battery voltage was below the acceptable voltage value, test each cell with the hydrometer. If the difference in specific gravity readings between any two cells is 50 points (0.050) or more, the battery is not satisfactory for service and should be replaced. F.
