All TPP programmes have NZQA approval and are designed to give you a strong foundation in your chosen career. Tai Poutini Polytechnic has campuses in Auckland, Christchurch, Greymouth, Hamilton, Hokitika, Invercargill, Reefton, Wanaka and Westport, and offers industry training throughout NZ. 3 STREET TALK 3 WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? Street talk is an approved course of instruction, teaching advanced driving skills, it gives you the skills to be an incontrol driver. The course consists of four two hour class room sessions and one on the road practical session, which sets you up ready for your full test. Street talk is approved to reduce the time you need to stay on a restricted licence by either three or six months, depending on your age. Street talk graduates will be credited with unit standards 3464 and 3465 on the NZQA qualification framework on the completion of the course. ENTRY CRITERIA Refer to page 10

4 4 FORKLIFT LEVEL: Level 3 CREDIT VALUE: 2 or 7 credits START DATE: Multiple intakes per year END DATE: Varies LOCATION: Available nationally FEES: Price on application WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? A forklift licence consists of two parts, the F endorsement and the OSH certificate. OSH certificate - entitles you to drive a forklift in an enclosed workplace. Expires every 3 years. F Endorsement - entitles you to drive a forklift in workplace, public, or on public roads and is added to your licence and does not expire. GETTING A FORKLIFT LICENCE A Forklift course is over one day and includes theory and practical components. You will have to study pre-learning material, pass a test on the theory and complete a practical assessment on a forklift. Additional practical forklift operation training is available. You will be issued with a certificate for your forklift endorsement to put on your drivers licence. You need to take your certificate to the licensing agency along with: Your drivers licence Proof of residency (bank statement, or bill of some sort, showing your address). You will also be issued with a certificate and wallet card for the OSH component of the course which will have the expiry date on it recommending the refresher date. The following unit standards will be added to your record of learning once you have completed the approved course and unit standard assessments to competency standard. Further electives are also available, which include operating telehandlers, lifting and moving loads. 5 DANGEROUS GOODS 5 LEVEL: Level 3 CREDIT VALUE: 5 credits START DATE: Multiple intakes per year END DATE: Varies LOCATION: Available nationally FEES: Price on application WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? If you are transporting dangerous goods you may need to have a dangerous goods (D) Endorsement on your driver licence. We recommend checking with NZTA at to identify if you need this endorsement. GETTING A D ENDORSEMENT You must hold a current New Zealand licence (learners, restricted or full), for the vehicle (car, van or truck) you re using to transport the dangerous or hazardous goods. The D endorsement expires every 5 years and you must re-sit an approved course, and have it endorsed on your licence. NZQA unit standard demonstrate knowledge of law and practice for the transport of dangerous goods by road, this Unit Standard will be added to your record of learning on NZQA.

6 6 HEAVY VEHICLES LEVEL: Level 3 CREDIT VALUE: 5-8 credits START DATE: Multiple intakes per year END DATE: Varies LOCATION: Available nationally FEES: Price on application WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? There are different classes of trucks that require different licences to legally operate them on the roads. Tai Poutini Polytechnic offer: Fatigue and logbook management unit standards All classes of truck licence training Truck mounted crane (Hiab) operation training Wheels, tracks and roller endorsements Passenger vehicle endorsements HOW DO I GET THESE ENDORSEMENTS AND LICENCES? Tai Poutini Polytechnic provides all the vehicles for this training and assessment. For further information on the process check out the New Zealand Transport Authority information at this link - FATIGUE AND LOGBOOK MANAGEMENT UNIT STANDARDS This unit standard is for drivers of motor vehicles who must comply with work time legislation, such as trucks, buses and taxis. This is a one day course, involving 6 hours tutoring time and a closed book assessment at the conclusion of the day. Once completed you will have gained unit standard Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements. NOTE: This is a prerequisite for some driver licences and endorsements. CLASS 2 (MEDIUM RIGID VEHICLE) This course is for drivers who wish to obtain their full Class 2 licence (Medium rigid vehicle) or for people who already hold their full Class 2 licence and wish to obtain the unit standards or confirm their existing knowledge and skills. The course consists of 2 days in the classroom plus practical drive time. To obtain your Class 2 licence, Tai Poutini Polytechnic will provide: One full day of theory training and assessment for completing unit standard Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements. One full day of theory training and assessment for completing unit standard operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full Class 2 driver licence. A pre assessment drive which can take up to one hour depending on your experience. The assessor will then take you for a practical assessment drive which will take approximately a minimum of 40 minutes and will cover a minimum distance of 20 kilometers. Once you are competent on the assessments and drive you will be given your Class 2 Licence certificate to take to the AA agency to put on your licence. NOTE: A Class 2 learner licence must be gained at a Driver Licensing agent prior to commencing this course. 7 7 CLASS 4 (HEAVY RIGID VEHICLE) This course is for drivers who wish to obtain their full Class 4 licence (heavy rigid vehicle) or for people who already hold their full Class 4 licence and wish to obtain the unit standards or confirm their existing knowledge and skills. The course consists of 2 days in the classroom plus practical drive time If you have been assessed competent in unit standards fatigue management, work time and drivers logbook requirements in the last 12 months, you are only required to attend one day of the Class 4 theory, and complete the practical drives. If you have been assessed competent in unit standards operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full Class 2 driver licence in the last 12 months you may only be required to sit a theory assessment and the practical drive component of the course. To obtain your Class 4 licence, Tai Poutini Polytechnic will provide: One full day of theory training and assessment for completing unit standard Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements. One full day of theory training and assessment for completing unit standard Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full Class 4 driver licence. A pre assessment drive which can take up to one hour depending on your experience. The assessor will then take you for a practical assessment drive which will take a minimum of 40 minutes and will cover a minimum distance of 20 kilometers. 8 8 WHEELS, TRACKS & ROLLERS LEVEL: Level 3 CREDIT VALUE: W3, T3, R3 START DATE: Multiple intakes per year END DATE: Varies LOCATION: Available nationally FEES: Price on application WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? This endorsement allows the bearer to drive a variety of specialised heavy vehicles on the road. If you do not have this endorsement, you are not legally allowed to drive a special heavy machinery type vehicle on the road. Wheels include any heavy vehicle that rides on wheels and will be included on your licence as a W endorsement. Tracks include any moving equipment running on tracks, such as diggers or bulldozers. You will receive a T endorsement on your licence. Rollers include heavy machinery that uses a large roller wheel as its drive and steering mechanism. You will gain a R endorsement on your licence. These endorsements can be provided individually, or as part of the Wheels, Tracks and Rollers short course. You must have the right class of licence for the weight of the vehicle you are operating.

9 9 PASSENGER ENDORSEMENT LEVEL: Level 3 CREDIT VALUE: 3 credits START DATE: Multiple intakes per year END DATE: Varies LOCATION: Available nationally FEES: Price on application WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? You will need a Passenger or P endorsement if you drive a small or large passenger service vehicle for hire or reward e.g. buses, vans. To gain a P Endorsement you must hold, and have held for at least 2 years a full New Zealand Class 1 drivers licence. Depending on the size of the vehicle you may also require a Class 2 Licence. A small passenger service vehicle has a maximum of 12 seats. A large passenger service vehicle has more than 12 seats. Your application will be sent to NZTA for a fit and proper person check prior to the course. This course will require two full days in the class room. You will complete the following two unit standards which will be added to your record of learning. NZQA unit standard fatigue management, work time and drivers logbook requirements. NZQA unit standard17579 demonstrate knowledge of driver licensing requirements for P endorsement. These are both closed book assessments. If you have been assessed competent in unit standards fatigue management, work time and drivers logbook requirements in the last 12 months you are only required to attend on the day of the Passenger endorsement course. The practical assessment for this licence endorsement must be completed with an NZTA testing officer. 10 10 ENTRY CRITERIA STREET TALK Applicants must meet the following criteria: Be 16 years of age or over Applicants must have held a Class 1 restricted drivers licence for minimum of 6 months. Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 DRIVER EDUCATION (Except Street Talk) Applicants must meet the following criteria: Be 16 years of age or over Hold their appropriate learners licence class relevant to the training they are enrolled on. Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5. We do not set a closing date for applications. The Polytechnic reserves the right to not accept late applications, i.e., after the programme has started. You will be offered a place subject to meeting the entry and selection requirements and the availability of places on the programme. The Polytechnic reserves the right to cancel, prior to commencement, any programme which does not attract a minimum number of students.
