The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December Purpose This certificate is designed as the national qualification for people working in the Automotive Servicing branch of the Motor Industry. Holders of this qualification are able to carry out general service work in an automotive workshop or service bay. The certificate is designed for those wishing to work in a safe and professional manner, to maintain standards in the automotive engineering industry, and to provide a means of recognising prior learning for those already working in the industry. Details regarding industry recognition and industry registration can be obtained from the in the first instance. Unit standards in this qualification have relevance to other automotive engineering qualifications, and those people who wish to consider additional unit standards or qualifications should contact the for advice. Replacement Information This qualification, the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Brake Service Engineering) [Ref: 0096], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Radiator Repair) [Ref: 0188], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Steering, Suspension, and Alignment) with an optional strand in Heavy Commercial Vehicles [Ref: 0246], National Certificate in Motor Industry (Exhaust Servicing) [Ref: 0372], and the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Tyre Servicing) with optional strands in Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicle Tyres, Agricultural Equipment Tyres, Off-The-Road Equipment Tyres, Industrial Tyres, and Steering and Suspension [Ref: 0373] have been replaced by the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Vehicle Servicing) with strands in Brake and Clutch, Exhaust Systems, Radiator Repair, Steering and Suspension, Tyres, Underbody and General Service, and Vehicle Security, and with an optional strand in Heavy Vehicle Steering and Suspension [Ref: 1420]. Special Notes It is expected that most people will undertake training towards this qualification in the form of a traineeship with the use of record of achievement books and training manuals. It is recommended that in the first instance, a training plan be developed with the assistance of a representative.

Credits are not automatic and normally an assessment of ability is required. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. Version 2 was reviewed and issued as part of the Motor Industry unit standard review. Changes to structure and content removal of prerequisite qualification the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry to Automotive Trades) [Ref: 0017]; the addition of unit standards 225, 228, 229, 233, 236, 237, 238, 241, 242, 243, 245, 247 and 249 to the compulsory section, and unit standards 56, 57 and 230 to the elective section. These unit standards were previously covered by being included in the prerequisite qualification; the structure has been amended to provide for an elective section; addition of new unit standards 3400, 3877, 11738, 15406, and to the compulsory section, and unit standards 58, 898, 935 and to the elective section;

People holding credit for those unit standards may choose to complete version 1 within the period of transition; unit standard 503 replaced by 12349; credit total for the qualification increased from 41 to Summary of exemptions This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below. Credit for Exempt from Some unit standards specified in this qualification are considered similar in nature to other MITO unit standards. MITO recommends that people holding credit for those unit standards should apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) as indicated in the table below.
