No loose panels or items that could endanger other road users. All inspection panels must be secure. Candidate to demonstrate how to insert tachograph disc. Digital tachographs may require an explanation if the candidate does not have a digital card. Candidates should be able to explain briefly the correct operation and safe working practice of specific machinery fitted to the vehicle (tail lift, kneeling bus) A visual check to identify any nuts that are obviously loose, and check that the wheel nut indicators (if fitted) are in alignment. Windscreen wipers must operate. Blades should be in good condition. All doors must be closed and locking levers set in the recommended secure position Ensure that all reflectors are fitted, clean and functional (not cracked or broken) As part of daily walk-round check ensure mudguards and spray suppression equipment are secure

ANSWER As part of a daily walk-round check, suspension should be checked for any obvious signs of deterioration or damage Check to make sure that all gauges and warning systems are working. Ensure that all gauges are reading correctly an that warning lights/audible warning devices are extinguished before moving away. The load should be evenly distributed throughout the length of the vehicle so as not to affect control while the vehicle is being driven. Any load must be carried so that it does not endanger other road users. It must be securely stowed within the size and weight limits for the vehicle. The load needs to be secure so that it cannot move or fall from the vehicle when cornering or braking. Charge the air tanks, consult gauges for drops in air pressure. Walk round vehicle listening for any obvious leaks. Operate the control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary) Set all relevant controls including; fan temperature, air direction/source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration

(No need to exit the vehicle) 16 Headlights Show Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam 17 Brake Show Lights Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this vehicle (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please don t start the engine) ANSWER Operate switch (turn on ignition and dipped headlights if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light. Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc or ask someone for help.

6 CATEGORY C+E UNCOUPLING TRAILER PROCEDURE 1. Select a suitable location. 2. Make sure handbrake is on/in neutral/engine turned off. Put bib and hard hat on and close the door. 3. Apply the trailer parking brake. 4. Lower the Trailer parking brake. 5. Disconnect air-lines and power cable ABS. 6. Release fifth wheel lock 7. Engage lowest forward gear and move out carefully watching separation of vehicle and trailer. 8. Park vehicle alongside trailer (right hand side) reversing into position. SAFETY POINT: Make sure that you wear PPE during this exercise at all times.

7 CATEGORY C+E RECOUPLING TRAILER PROCEDURE 1. Make sure Handbrake is on/in neutral/engine is off. Put bib and hard hat on and close the door. 2. Line up unit straight and dead centre with the Trailer. 3. Check that the Trailer parking brake is applied. Check the relative heights and alignment of the vehicle fifth wheel and trailer couplings are adjusted as necessary. 4. Walk around Trailer, check wheels, lights, door damage and overall safety of the vehicle. 5. Reverse in until coupling locks engage low forward gear and shunt forward twice to make sure coupling is secure. (Apply lorry handbrake, place in neutral, switch engine off, remove hard hat and bib and close vehicle door). 6. Put fifth wheel handle safety lock on. 7. Connect air lines, power cable and ABS. 8. Raise up Trailer legs (Stow Handle). 9. Release trailer parking brake. 10. Carry out final check of the vehicle lights, and ask the examiner to check your brake light, you need to drive the vehicle up a few feet then brake.
