FROM THE PRESIDENT I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as President of JDCHR and it is an honour to be re-elected, and I thank everyone for their confidence in me; I will endeavour to build on our last successful year with the help of all the committee and office bearers, we look forward to the year ahead where we all enjoy the camaraderie of Jaguar ownership and social events of our Club. Grace Space Pace what fantastic words summing up Jaguar. Thankyou to Robynne, Allan S, Allan C, Don, Phil, Graeme, Peter, Andrew H, Andrew P, John and Pauline for renominating and being re-elected, they have been putting in a tremendous effort on your behalf, and it augers well for the Club that they wish to carry on. Mary (Cox) has stood down as Social Secretary. Thank you Mary for such tremendous devotion to the Club for all the years you have been a member and the work you have put in this year as Social Secretary for such enjoyable events; who can forget our trip to Wings over Wollongong, the New Members Breakfast with those tasty snags, Presentation Dinner with mystery guessing gifts, sitting on Santa s knee by the water, Australia Day by the Harbour or Xmas in July to name but a few, where we all enjoyed much merriment. Mary also assisted with our Mid Week Runs, which have regularly seen cars gathering for a drive, devouring cakes for morning tea, invariably finishing for lunch in a relaxing atmosphere. The ladies also enjoyed a day out at the antique warehouse while the boys learnt more mechanical knowledge at Brett Thomas workshop. Our thanks cannot convey enough our appreciation of your contribution; we will miss you in this role. We ask members to consider stepping forward to continue this important role of Social Secretary. Thank you Steve (Bloomfield) for your contribution as Elected Member representing the members on Committee. Your years of membership of the Club and knowledge have helped with decision making benefitting members. With modern communications and the interaction of all Club members, the committee decided to rescind this position for next year. Jaguar as a company continues to grow with increased sales around the world; the C-X75 going into production, surprise new releases like the C-X 16 and many more models in planning for the future. The Jaguar XF has been announced as Auto Express Driver Power 'Car of the Decade' (Roger Holt last seen jumping for joy!). Gary Pearson became the third race winner in the E-type Challenge celebrating 50 years of the Jaguar E-type, when he scored a double win in testing conditions during the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring (13/14 August). We have a number of outings coming up, this Sunday is Broke Fair, Mid Week Run to Fighter World at Williamtown on Wednesday, then Gresford Show & Shine, and the Mattara Hill Climb Club display. Our tip to Temora Air Show is fully booked, and as usual we are expecting lots of fun between our usual time spent eating (and ice creams!) We look forward to seeing everyone at, future Club outings, and our Club meeting, until then, safe and enjoyable driving. Ian The HUB September

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The election of Committee and Office Bearers for the next year was carried out at the AGM following the August General Meeting. The Committee had previously decided that: the Editor s position become part of the Executive and Management Committee The Elected member position be abolished as it had been utilised infrequently, if ever, in recent times and it was felt that members could and do bring matters forward through any other Committee member A new office bearer position of Display Day Grand Marshall be created, to lead a Display Day Subcommittee with specific responsibility for that event As a result of these changes and the election of positions, the Executive and Management Committee and Office Bearers are as now shown on Page 4. Congratulations to these willing volunteers. One concerning result is that the position of Social Secretary remains vacant, there being no nominations following Mary Cox s understandable decision to stand down after many years of successful and sterling service in this role. The Club must have a person or persons to coordinate this function, so the search continues! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Members and Family with birthdays in September are : Gary Flack (2nd); Byron Hissey (4th); Rod Glassop and Garry Smith (12th) Helen Lowe (15th); Phil McLeod (17th); Andrew Haigh (21st) Patricia Lindsay (26th) May your birthdays be filled with good health, laughter and safe driving. 9 Sadly, one of our long term members, Dell Paterson, passed away on 14 August 2011 at the age of 87. Dell lived her entire life in the vicinity of Maitland. All who knew her always looked forward to her sometimes mischievous good humour, the sparkle she conveyed, and her care for individuals. Dell and Max were together for over 65 years, which probably would have been longer had WWII not intervened at the beginning. Their obvious affection and care for each other was always a joy to observe, and an example for all of us. Unfortunately Dell was unable to attend any club events in recent years. The club was well represented at the funeral held at East Maitland with around fifteen members attending. During the service her granddaughter, great granddaughter and great grandson echoed the feelings of all who attended. She leaves a daughter and two sons, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Dell will be sadly missed, but we look forward to welcoming Max back into some club activities....written and submitted by Andrew Pointing Max with JDCHR members at Dell s funeral Max and Dell Paterson Dell with JDCHR members during the 2004 Economy Run The HUB September

- a segment featuring Club members and their cars This month s member(s): Ken and Caroline Moore When did you join JDCHR? In 2008 when I purchased a 1976 model XJC coupe, which was the fourth XJ6 that I had owned, all series 2 and 3 models. What Jaguar (s) do you currently own? XJ6 Series 1 manual o/d 1969 model and S Type SE V model, an ex Canberra Jaguar Driver`s Club Car of the Year. What was your first Jaguar? XJ6 Series model. When did you get your first Jaguar? April What is your daily drive? Caroline drives a Hyundai Santa Fe diesel auto 4WD 7 seater wagon. Until recently, I also had a 1991 limited edition Mazda MX5 but I am losing interest in wind in the hair motoring along with my hair. How did you first get interested in Jaguars? Like all 15 year old boys I was entranced by the E type when it was released in 1961, and devoured all the magazine articles about it, but I honestly never considered the possibility of owning a Jaguar, until I purchased the new Series 3 in My first car was British however, a 1958 model Austin Lancer. I drove past an identical one in Raymond Terrace recently and could not believe how tiny it was. And the things I used to get up to in it! Coincidentally, Caroline worked as Sales Manager s secretary for a Jaguar Daimler dealer (K Garage at Mill Hill, London), immediately before coming to Australia in1968, and she vividly remembers working in the showroom surrounded by fantastic E Types. 10 The HUB September 2011

The Modern S Type and the XJC photographed at Karuah before Ken and Caroline moved to Brandy Hill Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? Just a few - SS 100, MK 5 DHC, XK 140 Roadster, XK 150S FHC, E Type Series 1 Roadster with removable hardtop, Mk manual o/d, XJC manual o/d. This is just a preliminary list of essentials to be purchased immediately after the Lotto numbers come up and would no doubt be extended over time. What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguar(s)? Touring in the S type which is just a fabulous touring car and (hopefully), club activities and Sunday drives in the XJ6. How much of the work on your Jaguar(s) do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing? Only very simple stuff, I hate flesh wounds and third degree burns which are the inevitable outcome of most of my attempts at mechanical work, and it can also be very hard to source replacement parts that I break during my labours. After 30 years however, I do have a good feeling for when they`re running right, and what might be wrong if they are not, so I know when to visit the mechanic. What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? All classic cars and wooden boats, woodworking. I have built a couple of wooden boats in earlier times, but large projects hurt too much nowadays and I build much smaller things, such as car beds for the grandchildren. I am particularly fond of acoustic guitar making. Ken s newest Jaguar the Series 1 XJ6 featured in the August 2011 HUB Best driving experience? I will not quickly forget the trip from New Delhi to Agra in 1976, unbelted, in the back seat of an Ambassador (aka an Indian reproduction of the 1946 Morris Oxford), with the Sikh chauffer driving at furious speed with one hand continually on the horn, whilst narrowly avoiding oncoming, grossly over-width bicycles, motor scooters and horse drawn carts, as well as brightly painted overloaded The HUB September

GRILLED KEN & CAROLINE MOORE (cont d) trucks and buses, most of which were on the wrong side of the road, also being driven at furious speed with their driver s hand continually on the horn. The sight and sound of the Taj Mahal, however, soon transformed this into a wonderful driving experience. The all time best, most amazing, unforgettable road trip of my life however, did not feature a car at all, but a bicycle. I was on holiday in Maui in1999 with the family, when my youngest daughter Holly convinced me, very reluctantly, to go on a mountain bicycle ride. This ride involved being picked up at 3.30 am at the hotel in a mini bus which was then driven at breakneck speed in the dark, up a perilously steep and winding road to the top of Mount Haleakala, which is at 10,000 feet, the highest peak on Maui and a dormant, but potentially active, volcano. It was freezing cold before dawn at the top and as it is usually at least misty if not raining, they provided everyone with hooded, yellow, waterproof overalls, along with their bicycles. We were in luck however, the sky was crystal clear as we watched the sun rise over the volcano, perched on the rim of the huge 7 mile wide x half mile deep crater - an almost religious experience. There was a large carpark at the top of the mountain, with a huge number of people in yellow overalls on bicycles, several hundred at least. In the most amazing example of crowd control I have ever seen, each individual group of riders was somehow marshalled and despatched at regular intervals, to coast down the side of the mountain. As I recall, the total distance was some 37 miles, and in all that way it was necessary to pedal only once, for about 400 yards on level terrain. The ride took several hours and the views on the way down were simply breathtaking. When we stopped for a break halfway down, where the team leader took photographs of me Holly and Cleo, we were still above the clouds! The trip ended at the bottom of the mountain with a hot and very welcome American breakfast. I travelled a lot in my career and saw a lot of stuff, but this exhilarating trip remains the best travel experience of my life, all the more so because I was able to share in it with my two wonderful daughters. During all of the above adventure, Caroline was sound asleep in her hotel bed, having decided that her bike riding skills were wanting. In retrospect, this was a remarkably prescient decision, as rides from the very top section of the mountain were banned some years later due to an unacceptable number of fatal accidents! The Series 1 XJ6 photographed at the Club s All British Display Day in July The HUB September 2011

Worst driving experience? Accelerating hard out of a Gold Coast carpark in the pouring rain, to squeeze into a gap in peak hour traffic, only to have the accelerator pedal of my first Series 3 stick firmly to the floor, whilst heading towards slowing traffic at warp speed. The linkage beneath the pedal hooked under the edge of the footwell carpet, and it was only good luck when it released at the last second, as a result of my frantic stomping on it. A wonderful example of the advanced engineering of Jaguar - it took Toyota another 28 years to recreate a similar feature in the Camry, although to be fair, Toyota did seem to include it in a far larger number of vehicles! Ken Moore Members who have attended meetings over recent months will have heard the Editor appealing for more people to submit themselves and their cars to the collective scrutiny of the HUB s readership, by allowing themselves to be featured in Grilled. Usually the members who have provided their details have done so voluntarily, and I think have suffered no ill-effects after their publication. Feedback from readers suggests that others really enjoy reading this segment and want it to continue. So I again need volunteers. Grilled has been running for only about 21 months, so there are plenty of members left to face the media glare! Please don t wait to be asked. Contact the Editor (contact details on Page 4). 14 WHAT IS THE ACJC? As time moves on, and the membership changes within our Clubs, Just what is this ACJC? is a question new members might well ask. It could also be that, amongst those members who have been in the Clubs for a long time, their knowledge of the ACJC, what it is and what it does, has been lost in the mists of time. The Australian Council of Jaguar Clubs was first mooted at the Jaguar National Concours (as the National Rally was then known) back in 1983 and the first meeting was held in Sydney that year. Each Club regarded it as so important that they paid for their own representative to attend the two-day meeting. It actually was born in 1984 when the Jaguar distributorship as it was then known, viz. Jaguar Rover Australia (JRA) agreed to sponsor the formation and running of a national association of Jaguar car clubs. Prior to this, the various Clubs had come together annually for a Concours, often in a country town, together with sporting activities (such as a motorkhana), and a couple of dinners and a Summit meeting. The meeting, which can really be described as a vigorous chat between the various Clubs Committee members present, was held on the day after the event before they headed home. However the arrangement had been a very loose one and it was fraught with difficulties as most Clubs had their very own ideas as to how and when to conduct a National gettogether. The National Rally in Albury in 1983 saw the start of change. The consensus was reached that there needed to be a central body to co-ordinate communication between the State bodies and to start to standardise the running of a National Rally. It wasn t to be a new Club, but a federation of the eight major Australian Clubs which all have an interest in the marque started by Sir William Lyons, the Jaguar. Hence the ACJC was conceived as a central co -operative body but with equality in votes irrespective of the size of each constituent Club and without power over any Club. But how to fund such a body? John Crawford, PR manager of JRA was approached and was very supportive of the formation of the ACJC and agreed to cover the costs of the two meetings per year. But part of the arrangement was that the ACJC should become the one central body through whom communications were passed to JRA, rather than each of the Clubs and others making piecemeal direct approaches. This is still the expressed wish of Jaguar in Australia as recently as July this year. One of the first decisions of the ACJC was to hold the National Rally annually at Easter since all States shared that holiday break. After the demise of JRA in 1991, support of the ACJC continued through various distributors but waxed and waned. Following the 1998 Gold Coast Rally, at which Yokohama (not a Jaguar 14 The HUB September 2011

How does the Council function? you might wonder. supplier) was the major sponsor, Jaguar offered to resolve this conflict by providing some sponsorship of the National Rally. Through this mechanism, these days every registrant at a National Rally is indirectly subsidised, in addition to the separate support Jaguar has chosen to provide on a case-bycase basis for the Friday night Welcome Party. The Council is an Incorporated Association under the South Australian law and is a non-profit body under the taxation law. Its twofold purpose is to be responsible for the procedures to be employed in conducting the annual National Rallies, and to act as a conduit for communication between Jaguar Land Rover Australia (JLRA - the recently renamed Jaguar distributorship) and the State-based Clubs. Each Club appoints or elects a member to be their ACJC delegate. It is through this person that the wishes of the individual Clubs, and their views on topics, become known. In most instances these delegates are full members of their own State Club s Committee. They act as the voice of that Committee at a National level. For a number of years meetings were held over two days in Sydney, the domicile of Jaguar. However it was thought that, with more efficient management, the business could be done within one day (albeit rather long for some delegates), thereby containing costs of the Council and hence the membership contribution by each Club. Delegates now attend a one-day meeting in Sydney every six months in February and August, the latter being the Annual General Meeting. Jaguar is represented, usually by their General Manager, who brings members up-to-date on Jaguar matters. Delegates also need to have much more communication during the year between these meetings discussing the various matters that might affect the Council and the Clubs. It is helpful to the functioning of the Council that delegates are (or have been recently) actively involved in the management within their own Club and in the Jaguar movement. An awareness of matters pertaining to Concours and/or sporting activities also helps. Currently, we are fortunate to have as delegates people who have a history of participation and managerial involvement in their respective Clubs. Ken White (JDCA) is the current Chairman and Treasurer. He has been part of the JDCA for 17 years, serving on their Management Committee for 13 years, including three as President. He was the Rally director for Sydney Gold 2000, the National Rally in Ken has been involved in the social, sporting and Concours activities of their Club, and has attended 13 National Rallies. He was formerly Secretary/ Treasurer of the ACJC for three years and an alternate delegate prior to that. The HUB September

WHAT IS THE ACJC? (cont d) Rod Mathers (JCCWA) is the current Secretary of the ACJC, a member of the JCCWA for 12 years and a Jaguar owner for 50 years. He is an active member of the motor sports fraternity serving on State Council of CAMS, as a Commissioner of the Marque, Touring and Enthusiasts Commission of CAMS and has served as an Official at many Club and State events. Rod served terms as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the JCCWA and is the National Rally Director for Rod has restored six Jaguars and recently completed building a Jaguar-powered HWM. Bob Charman (JDCSA) is currently Vice President of his Club which he joined in 1974 not long after its commencement. He is also Register Secretary for the XJ, 420G, Mk 10 register. and has been ACJC delegate for the last two years. His first Jaguar in 1970 was a 1966 'S' Type, moving to a Series 1 XJ and then a G. Subsequently he fully restored another 420G that won the People's Choice award for the best car at the last two SA Jag Days. Now retired, he and his wife are also the proud owners of a V 'S' Type which they love using. Rod Force (JCCT) is President of the Club in Tasmania and was National Rally Director for the 2009 Rally in Hobart. He has served on the ACJC since Rod owns an XJ6 and an XK8, and is involved in social, sporting and Concours events within his Club. Rod achieved outright winner of their 2011 State Concours with his XK8, and has attended all the National Rallies since Geoff Hergt (JCCV) has been a member of his Club for 10 years, participating in many, and varied, Club functions and events. A past Secretary of the JCCV for two terms under different Club Presidents, Geoff has been their delegate to the ACJC for 5 years, bringing a wealth of business experience to that role. When it was recognised that a better system of management was required to ensure the safety of the most valuable asset of the ACJC - its Perpetual Trophies - Geoff was instrumental in setting up and managing the current system which has proven so successful over three National Rallies. Ian Hissey (JDCHR) is a member of his Club for 7 years, and President for the past 4 years after some years as Editor of their magazine. Ian has also been a member of the JDCA for 16 years, serving as Editor there for a lengthy time. In 2006 he looked after Promotion and Administration for the JDCA-organised National Rally in Newcastle after previously having handled Administration for the 2000 Rally in Sydney. Each year Ian organises the extended trips over 2-3 weeks the JDCHR undertakes to the National Rally and is very involved in social and sporting aspects of the Clubs with his XJ6 & XJ-SC. David McKnight (JDCQ) has served on the ACJC for the last 6 years and was Chairman in 2006 and Previously a member of the JDCA, where from 1999 until 2004 he and wife Kate were the Social Secretaries, since moving to Brisbane they have been JDCQ members. Currently the JDCQ Modern Register Secretary, David has served as Secretary, then President and was on the Committee for the 2003 Noosa Rally. He has competed in Concours d Elegance events since 2000, winning seven State titles as well as National titles in 2003 and 2010, runner-up in The HUB September 2011

Larry Roux (JDCC) has been a member of his Club for around 20 years, including holding the position of Vice President and, since 2009, that of President. He has been the ACJC delegate since 2009 and was also the National Rally Director for Notwithstanding the name of the Club, he was without a mobile Jaguar for many years as his E-Type restoration project fell victim to other priorities. However, it finally made its way to the top of the list and last year he was again able to qualify as a Jaguar driver. The ACJC has been fortunate to have such a group of people, giving it the opportunity to draw on their extensive experience to maximise the role of the ACJC, a role defined as: promoting communications and co-operation between the eight major Jaguar Clubs in Australia, acting as the focal point for the relationship between the Australian Clubs and Jaguar Australia, providing a communication channel for matters of interest to all the Australian Clubs, and seeking to promote camaraderie between Jaguar enthusiasts. 18 Hot on the heals of our own successful All British Display Day on 30th July, came the JDCA annual event that is always equally anticipated their Kings School British Day and Concours, this year on 28th August. Due to the requirement for displayed cars to be in place early, an even earlier rendezvous at the F3 Caltex was called for. Some sleepy eyes were in evidence at the 7.00am start. Notwithstanding, the Club was represented by no fewer than 20 cars, which probably outnumbered any other Club on the day, and was officially acknowledged by Brian Todd, President of JDCA during the presentation speeches. Our contingent was made up of: Ready to leave the F3 Caltex Ian Hissey XJ-SC Steve & Robynne Lily E Type S3 Peter Dwyer XJ6 S1 Phil McLeod XJ6 S2 Darren Burgess XJ6 S3 Harvey Birtwistle X300 Sport Gareme & Mary Cox XJ12 Alistair McIlroy E Type S2 Paul Barnett & Wendy E Type S2 Bill Whitby & Kelly S Type John M<oremon & Lyn XK8 Michael Laugesen & Joyce XJ6 S2 Ray Bond & Marg XK8 conv. We thus avoided the usual traffic jam on Pennant Hills Road. Harvey Birtwistle, as a Concours entrant, had arrived earlier and was parked with his fellow trophy aspirants. Once issued with our goodies bags, we were able to set up in prime position alongside the JDCA and a prompt call went out for tea, coffee and toilets (not necessarily in that order!). Not surprisingly, given the stunning condition of this car, Harvey came home with a Gold Award in this competition. Congratulations to Harvey. Again this year, the JDCA judges also award a Paddock Pick prize for each Jaguar Club represented, and chose Alistair McIlroy s much admired E Type Series 2. Congratulations to Alistair. Once again, this very important event in the classic car calendar lived up to its reputation. It has everything a huge turnout of cars (claimed to be over 2000), a spectacular setting, very good refreshment provisions, and excellent organisation. As well, there s plenty for the non-car person, with The Kings School Art Show and a variety of other stalls and entertainment. The photos in these pages give s o m e idea of Harvey Birtwistle being presented with his award by Brian Todd, President of JDCA the variety and n u m b e r of cars on display Alistair s paddock pick winning E Type nestling between Peter dwyer s XJ6 and Paul Barnett s roadster When the car business was concluded, the convoy headed for home, with a loose arrangement to stop for coffee and cake at the F3 Service Centre, where more camaraderie and good humour was enjoyed to finish off another great day with our cars. 34 FROM THE LOOKOUT Member John Sullivan suggested that there was scope for the sharp-eyed amongst us to notice interesting things on the internet (car-related he means!) and bring them forward for the enjoyment of others, via the HUB. Here s his contribution to kick it off... Editor Jaguar has released a teaser sketch of the C-X16 production concept that will preview an all-new compact coupe when it makes its global debut at the Frankfurt motor show on September 13. Jaguar says it will reveal full details of the C-X16 concept on September 7 a week before it attempts to upstage the world premiere of Porsche s next-generation 911 coupe with its sleek new concept. The single artist s rendering from Jaguar Design confirms long-running rumours of an all-new affordable Jaguar sportscar, but shows the C-X16 will appear first not as a roadster, but a coupe. Designed by the same team that produced the Jaguar XJ, XF and XK headed by Jaguar director of design Ian Callum the C-X16 concept is a precursor to future Jaguar sportscars that will aim to set new class benchmarks in design, vehicle dynamics and technology. While careful not to reveal where the production C-X16 two seater will be positioned within its range, its compact proportions support claims the newcomer will slot underneath the XK coupe as a direct rival for Porsche s entry level coupe, the Cayman. That would make a potential roadster version a competitor for Porsche s mid engine Boxster convertible, which along with the Cayman is also due for replacement within the next year or so. European reports say the C-X16 is based on a shortened version of the all aluminium platform that will underpin Jaguar s next XK due around 2014, and will be the same width as the current XK but almost 300mm shorter. I must admit that when I saw the sketch it reminded me of a BMW Z4, so with a bit of computer magic I removed the hardtop, added a BMW windscreen and... While Jaguar continues to develop a belated replacement for its discontinued X-Type compact sedan, the production C-X16 is expected to go on sale globally by the end of next year, bookending a sportscar range that will be topped by the million-dollar C-X75 plugin hybrid super-coupe that stunned the Paris motor show. 34 The HUB September 2011

The C-X16 s front-end design is expected to feature the same upright headlight graphic, four-sided grille and vertical air intake design as the sleek C-X75. All club members would appreciate that great Jaguars have always been beautiful, let s hope we get to see it in the metal soon....from John Sullivan, with help from Jaguar Cars and Autocar John s observations sparked me to think how this similarity between different makes of car within the same genre is very common. Just take a look at these other examples: Jaguar XKR Aston Martin DB9 BMW 3 Series Wagon Audi A4 Wagon When you think about the design process, where the respective designers set out with almost identical parameters, then get the stylists to create a shape that s the best looking they can, and then let the aerodynamicists at it and put it in a wind tunnel to get the drag coefficient as low as possible, it s probably not surprising everything starts to look the same. What happened to the good old days when Jaguars looked different from everything else?...phil McLeod The HUB September

Mid Week Runs conducted by the JDCHR have always been popular. They have traditionally involved an enjoyable drive, agreeable company, good eating and a little refreshment along the way. August s Mid Week Run was no exception, except that this time, it also involved a little culture! And not the sort of culture that sometimes includes beer and prawns this was real culture, with art, history and a little drama. Our program had us visiting Dobell House at Wangi Wangi, the former home of Sir William Dobell, one of Australia s most accomplished and celebrated artists, and a favourite son of the western side of Lake Macquarie. A smaller than usual number of cars met at Club Macquarie on 17th August, due to a clash with the funeral of Dell Paterson, wife of Max Paterson who is one of the Club s longest serving and most respected members. However, the small convoy set off, and were joined by several others at Dobell House. Dobell House sits on the foreshore of Lake Macquarie, adjacent to a small picnic area where we enjoyed morning tea, before proceeding inside for a pre-arranged inspection and presentation. Above: Ian Hissey, Roger Holt, Emily Heather and Margaret Holt Our group included Ian Hissey (XJ-SC), Phil McLeod (XJ6 S2), Roger and Margaret Holt (XF) with a visiting Rotary student Emily Heather, Harvey Birtwistle (XJ300 Sport) and Peter & Lesley Smith (X Type). After morning tea refreshments on the foreshore adjacent to the house, we were ushered inside, where the President and members of the Sir William Dobell Memorial Committee presented some history and background on the property and its now famous previous occupant. 38 The HUB September 2011

Right: Morning tea at Wangi Wangi from left, Roger & Margaret Holt, Peter & Lesley Smith, Harvey Birtwistle and Ian Hissey, with Emily Heather seated This is when the culture started. We were treated to a re-enactment of an actual court case, where a disgruntled artist took issue with Dobell being awarded his first Archibald Prize in However, they must have been short of actors, as our President Ian Hissey was co-opted into the role of you guessed it William Dobell. Ian did a fine job as stand-in, especially as he was not provided with a script. He must have done, as he won the case, and the Archibald Prize stood! After the theatrics, we had a roam about the house and the Editor tested a Brinsmead piano which the commentary suggested was haunted by spirits, which would leave the pianist with out-of-body experiences or warm flushes. (Nothing to report yet, Ed.). One very interesting piece amongst the Dobell memorabilia, was an actual sales receipt for a Jaguar 3.8 S Type purchased by Sir William in 1966, when he traded in his 2.4litre Mark 2. (over) Right and below: Dobell House never looked so good, as it did with five of Jaguar s finest lined up out the front The HUB September

AUGUST MID WEEK RUN (cont d) More interesting even, that the receipt bears the signature of Chas Trigg, father of Club member Dennis Trigg, who had a Jaguar dealership in Toronto in those days! Whilst we were amusing ourselves inside, it had started to rain, so it was a damp drive around the bottom of Lake Macquarie to Swansea, for lunch at the RSL. There we met Peter Dwyer and Alistair McIlroy, to round out our numbers for a relaxing lunch. Another interesting and entertaining mid-week run, thank you Ian. Above: The Editor with the spooky piano Above: High drama, starring Ian Hissey the others were so shy they hid behind their masks! Below: A perfect finish even when it rains lunch at Swansea overlooking Swansea Channel Above: For a British legend, it just has to be photographed wet from rain While on the subject of museums... Most parents tell their daughters to marry doctors... I told mine to marry an archaeologist because the older she gets, the more interested he will be in her. 40 The HUB September 2011

William Dobell was born 1899 in Bull St, Cooks Hill, a suburb of Newcastle. He was the youngest of three brothers and three sisters. His grandfather guided his hand drawing sketches of horses they came alive on the page he once said. The young Dobell s first job was as a window cleaner in Hunter Street, Newcastle. I wasn t a very good window cleaner and I got the sack. He claimed not to have been very good at school as he was usually at the back of the classroom drawing and painting the entries for the whole class for the School Children s Art Competition for the Newcastle Show. In 1916 his father apprenticed him to Wallace Porter to become an architect. In 1924, when Wallace Porter died, Dobell moved to Sydney, joined Wunderlich Ltd as a draughtsman and started night time art classes at the Julian Ashton School in the old Queen Victoria Markets in George Street. He met Joshua Smith and the two became great friends, when they worked with the Civil Construction Corps during World War 2, not painting battle scenes but rows of cabbages and cauliflowers on aircraft hangers and storage sheds as camouflage! In 1943 he won the Archibald Prize with a painting of Joshua Smith but the decision of the judges was challenged in court with the claim that the painting was a caricature and not a portrait. Dobell won the court case but his confidence in his art was destroyed. After the court case in 1943, Dobell came to Wangi to escape the notoriety the case had brought. When he first came to live at Wangi, he was ill, nervously exhausted and unable to paint. He also suffered from serious dermatitis. As he recovered, the scenery around him took his interest and he began to do little sketches until he painted The Narrows, The Westerly Breezes and then Storm Approaching Wangi which won him the Wynne Prize for Landscape in In 1948 he met Margaret Olley and asked if he might paint her portrait. As was his way, he made numerous sketches of her and then came back to Wangi to paint the portrait. When she saw the portrait she was amazed as he had sketched her in street clothing but had painted her as he had met her wearing her grandmother's wedding dress at a fancy dress ball. This was to be his second Archibald Prize. Dr McMahon, Dobell s surgeon following diagnosis of cancer, was his third Archibald Prize. In 1949 he went to New Guinea with Sir Edward Hallsrtom and fell in love with the colours and atmosphere. He always carried a sketch book which supported his work in his Wangi studio. He was readily accepted into the community in Wangi and was neither feted nor revered a level of acceptance he cherished. He drank at the local pub, RSL and Workers Club as just another local, though his home was visited by many important political figures, Governors General, famous writers, artists and actors. William Dobell lived in Wangi until his death in The HUB September

And finally... What s the difference between a used car salesman and a software salesmen? The used car salesman knows when he's lying. What's the difference between a blonde and a Jaguar? You don't lend the Jaguar out to your friend. My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were $150!!! No way, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move. A mate of mine recently admitted to being addicted to brake fluid. When I quizzed him on it he reckoned he could stop any time... I was driving this morning when I saw an NRMA van parked on the side of the road. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself that guy's heading for a breakdown. I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin, 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! A man drove his XJ6 into the crowded parking lot at the local shopping centre and rolled down the car windows to make sure his Labrador Retriever Pup had fresh air. She was stretched full-out on the back seat and he wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there. The man walked to the kerb backwards, pointing his finger at the car and saying emphatically, "Now you stay. Do you hear me?" "Stay! Stay!" The driver of a nearby car, a pretty young blonde, gave him a strange look and said, Why don't you just put it in 'Park'?" 58 The HUB September 2011
