5 FROM THE PRESIDENT.$15,000 that was the amount raised for Breast Cancer at the Paterson Cancer Breakfast on Sunday 23 rd October; a great result, thank you to all our members who came along and helped by consuming all those eggs, bacon, sausages, steak and chocolates. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Australian women, accounting for 27% of all cancer diagnoses. The number of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia is expected to increase from 12,567 in 2007 to 15,400 in About 24 per cent of new breast cancer cases were in women younger than 50 years, with the incidence rate increasing, a frightening prospect. Thank you to those members who travelled to Singleton for our October meeting, catching up with old friends and meeting new members from our Upper Hunter group. We missed the company of Robin & Sandra Wolfgang, who were relaxing whilst enjoying the delights of Vietnam. We were delighted to hear the tales of Graeme & Mary Cox s trip aboard The Indian Pacific and Ghan to Darwin, with Graeme interjecting comments while Mary talked. Leyland Rix reported on his and Helen s trip to Goodwood Revival. While having gone before, they were still overawed by all the wonderful exotic cars; acres of them in the car park, on display in the grounds, and driven to the maximum on the track! Roger & Margaret Holt described their trip to Lake Eyre, flying over the vast expanse of water with all the magnificent birdlife, coloured with Roger s usual dry wit, raising many laughs. Roger also raised some interesting questions during Problem Corner. Following Apex, Lions and Rotary, we really should have a Sergeant at Arms! Our Mid Week Run in October to Kurri for the murals, then via Luskintyre to Largs for lunch, was another enjoyable run. The November Mid Week Run is to Shingle Splitters on the shores of Lake Macquarie for morning tea, then onto Caves Beach Resort for lunch overlooking the ocean. December s Mid Week Run will be to the hinterland behind Gosford for morning tea at Mt Penang Gardens, then down to The Entrance for fish & chips while watching the pelicans frolic on the waters edge. Our son Byron is coming home to visit us for a month from his dreadful working life on board a 57m yacht in the Med and Caribbean, (Google S Y Melek and see what the rich toys are like) so is looking forward to some Club runs, the Temora trip, and the mid week runs. Don t forget to book in for our Presentation Dinner in December, a wonderful night, with lots of fun and hilarity. We look forward to seeing everyone at future Club outings, our Club meeting, so until then, safe and enjoyable driving. Ian The HUB November

7 FROM THE EDITOR A s you will have read in the minutes of our October meeting, I am running short of subjects for the Grilled segment of the HUB, so I will be ing some likely candidates over coming months asking that they send me a completed form and some photographs. I am inclined to accept lack of response as indicating that you don t wish to participate, so I won t pester you. Nothing worse than a serial nag! This month s magazine includes pictures and reports on some of our recent events that have been enjoyed by a variety of members. There s also a pictorial snapshot of the recent Goodwood Revival meeting in England, compiled by Ian Hissey. Some of our members had the pleasure of actually being there this year, and gave an interesting account at the October meeting. It sounds terrific. Maybe 2012??? There s an interesting and informative piece by John Sullivan about converting his Mark 2 oil filter over to the screw-on type, and a couple of lightweight bits to show you how Editors spend their idle hours when news is slow. I m starting to understand why there s such garbage on the evening news some nights! There is no Club meeting or HUB in December, so there will be a full program of events to report in January, especially the trip to the Temora Airshow, and our Presentation Dinner. Thank you to those who have sent me material for the HUB this year your contributions greatly ease the load on the Editor. 8 SOCIAL SECRETARY S REPORT T he mid-week run for October was on Wednesday the 12th, to the pub at Largs, via a picturesque run through the Lower Hunter. We began at Club Macquarie, through West Wallsend to Kurri Kurri, where we stopped at Rotary Park for morning tea. Arriving at Largs, David Merryweather, Graeme Gardiner and his friend Tim waiting for us. The lunch was nice and as usual filled with conversation about many and varied subjects. On Sunday 23rd we displayed eleven cars at the Breakfast for Breast Cancer fund raiser at Tucker Park in Paterson. Members assembled at Club Macquarie for a run through Seahampton and on to the bowling club at Lorn. We gathered there and the cars were decorated with pink ribbons after which we set off in convoy for Paterson. John Moremon won a prize in the raffles I am sure he will feel more secure in bed at night with his new teddy bear! Many thanks to Kelly McInnes for organising this day. For the month of November, we have the New Members Breakfast at the Hunter Valley Gardens on Saturday 5th. See details on Page 38. A mid week run is planned for the 9th for which details are on Page 39. On Friday 18th November, some members will set out on the run to the Temora Air Show, which by all accounts is a spectacular event of flying WW2 aircraft, returning on the Monday. An alternative event on the same weekend is the Concours Sportscar Restoration open day at Tuggerah on Sunday 20th. Check the flyer on Page 45. Finally the monthly meeting at the Club Macquarie will be on Tuesday the 29th. In December there will be a Mid Week Run on Tuesday 6th, to Mt Penang Gardens and The Entrance, as detailed on Page 40. Saturday 10th is the annual Presentation Dinner to be held at the Club Macquarie (Page 41). There is no Christmas picnic planned this year. In January the events being planned so far include a Mid Week Run with the details later, and the Australia Day Display at Customs House on the foreshore. These details are to be finalised with the Council, but hopefully we will be able to occupy our traditional place. The monthly meeting at Club Macquarie will be on January 31st. As the Club s new Social Secretary, I would welcome any thoughts and ideas for any outings or activities that you would like to be included in next years calendar of events. We are a diverse lot and we have a variety of interests, so with a few suggestions I m sure we will be able to come up with an interesting program for the coming year. Please any suggestions you may have to me at social@jaguarhunter.org.au, or to Secretary, Robyn Lilly secretary@jaguarhunter.org.au and she can pass them on to me. 10 This month s members: Garry and Shirley Smith When did you join JDCHR? In 2008 when we purchased the Mark 2 What Jaguar(s) do you currently own? A 1964 Mark What was your first Jaguar? This is it, the Mark 2. When did you get your first Jaguar? July 2008 What is your daily drive? - a segment featuring Club members and their cars A current model 3.6 Subaru Outback with all the bells and whistles and a current model Mitsubishi Lancer. I do a little four wheel driving and the Outback does everything we need. I like to take people to the top of the hill at the rear of our property and the automatic Outback does it more easily with a load of people than our previous manual Forester because the Forester s low range drops only half a gear and its short-stroke motor lacks momentum on a steep pull. A 3.8 Jaguar motor is a fitting reminder of how flexible an overhead-cam, long-stroke motor is, even if the piston speed is nearly double the Outback s at cruising speed because of the lack of a cruising gear and the long stroke design. How did you first get interested in Jaguars? I became interested when first learning to drive as a teenager they were stylish and had a reputation for high performance. At that time Mark IVs and Mark Vs were still around in Sydney and available very cheaply. I believe they were correctly called 1½, 2½ and 3½ litre saloons but were retrospectively called Mark IV after the Mark V came out. I lived some of that time in the country and we never saw them there, almost every car was American, but a visit to Sydney, particularly the east side, would reveal a few. 10 The HUB November 2011

11 Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? No, but I do remember a second hand D type I saw many years ago and could have afforded, I even thought of buying it. Sometimes when the sun goes down and I am sitting quietly I think of that car. I don t know how many came out to Australia but there were a few here Jack Davey had one as I remember. If I wanted to change or add another Jaguar to the household I think a good XJS could interest me. What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguar(s)? Mainly I just ponce up and down the main street of Gloucester every Saturday morning. I try to make the occasional club event and I occasionally take it for a recreational drive - I still do some work as a heritage/planning consultant, mainly for local government, and it creates much interest on the odd occasion I drive it to a site inspection or meeting. How much of the work on your Jaguar(s) do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing? Very little - daily care, check the oil and water, that sort of thing but not much more. My collecting experience lies mainly in antique furniture and I worked as an antique conservator/restorer on a hobby basis and for a while professionally. Antique furniture is devalued if it is stripped and repolished, sometimes by a huge amount, so I tend to prefer an original car rather than a restored car. My Jaguar will never be fully restored while I have it, I don t mind the patina of age showing on a vehicle but I do like it to be in good mechanical condition and I still have a few things to get done, mainly a couple of rattles and now the park position won t hold on a hill, but I will take it to a mechanic to get that done. I had the motor fully rebuilt when I got it, so that s ok. What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? Many cars appeal to me but American cars from the midthirties to early fifties stand out, particularly the coupes and convertibles, mainly the General Motors styles rather than the Fords. I remember a red fast-back style 1951 Chev (or other General Motors make) near where I lived in the 1950s as being particularly eye catching. And American cars where the pick of the of that era for durability reasons. The HUB November

12 GRILLED GARRY GARRY & SHIRLEY SMITH (cont d) Best driving experience? Nothing particularly stands out with the Jaguar, although I do like the attention it gets in the street. On several occasions when parked, I have had women come up to me and tell what a beautiful looking car it is a nice smile and a bit of interest in my Jaguar and I am anybody s! (Please, no wisecracks about them humouring the poor old bloke!) Worst driving experience? Again, nothing stands out with the Jaguar, other than a failed thermostat after the motor was rebuilt. If I go a bit further afield to my taxi driving days, my most memorable experience was driving a 1969 manual Holden for a Friday night shift in Sydney, with a failed clutch master cylinder and a broken gear shift stick, but I was hungry for money, with a mortgage to pay and the other trappings of getting established. When I got in the car about 5pm, the clutch was dragging badly and the column gear stick was bent at about forty degrees, from it being forced into gear. After about one hour of driving, the clutch master cylinder totally failed and the gear stick broke off. I could change between second and third gear by putting my finger in the slot, and I could engage first and reverse by inserting a screw driver into the slot to get leverage to pull back against the springs. I could start it in gear on the level or downhill, and change on the revs as I drove. The only trouble was if I had to stop while facing uphill, but I generally avoided that by getting it back into first gear and driving with one foot on the brake and one of the accelerator - it would keep gong at barely a slow walking pace. Bear in mind the car had done about 300,000 miles on the original motor and gearbox the compression couldn t pull the skin of a rice pudding and the gear teeth were well rounded. Also, you had to be able to double shuffle into the non-synchromesh first gear in those days, to get a cab licence; it was a case of get it right at various speeds from slow walking pace to near thirty mph (I remember barely snicking the gear on one change, and was told to come back next week), so the whole task was not as crazy as it sounds. That was the car s last shift, it was dumped the following day! If I may be permitted one other memory of note, it was as a passenger in a modified MGA on Ash Island at Newcastle. We had just passed the magic ton and had gone over a speed hump - we ll call it a speed hump, it was actually a pipe across the road with earth over it. We left the road briefly and when we touched down, I noticed a wheel bounding across the mangrove flats and out-accelerating the car. I said to the driver where do you think that came from? (knowing full well where) I don t know, we had better have a look was the reply. Anyway, the MG pulled up straight and level, you would not have known it was a three wheeler. We had a bit of a walk through the mangroves to retrieve the front right wheel however. Garry Smith 12 The HUB November 2011

14 OUR ADVERTISERS PPC The JDCHR is supported by a number of sponsors and advertisers. The HUB particularly, is able to be produced with the aid of the revenue from advertisers. They tell us a little of the detail and history of their businesses through this series Our Advertisers. Here is the second in the series, from Permanent Painted Coatings. P ermanent Painted Coatings (PPC) is an Australian owned and run company which was originally established in The company has always specialized in rust and corrosion products; importing a range of specialized paint products and chemicals that are guaranteed to work. It has grown from a husband and wife team to a company that imports over 100 products sourced from companies that have the best products to suit the car restoration or corrosive industry. There has been a large increase in demand over the last 5 years in products that have a proven track record. Products that have integrity and provide guaranteed satisfaction. It s become very apparent that people would rather pay for products that work the first time rather than wasting money on cheaper alternatives only to be disappointed. We have also seen an increase in international companies approaching us to represent them in the Australian market. We are very select in what we choose, ensuring that all products are the best in their field. PPC have become experts in products that repair rust, corrosion and general restoration in the motor, marine and industrial areas. We offer a friendly service and are always available to assist and answer any queries. Car clubs have enjoyed not only our products but our hospitality. Over the last few years we have happily hosted morning teas, and evening sausage sizzles and product discussions for Mini, Jag, Austin, Rover and Lotus car clubs to name a few. Rob Harrington-Johnston has worked around the world in various industries, in marine as well as importing and distributing chemicals to the paint, plastics and rubber industries. If you add hobbies in car and boat racing, he understands machinery and cars and knows how PPC can help with restorations in every way. He leads a team of people passionate about bringing excellence to everything they do. 20 OCTOBER MID WEEK RUN O ur mid week run for October was an enchanting drive through lower part of the Hunter Valley in the picturesque country, mainly west of Maitland. As usual it was well thought out and well planned. Most of us gathered at Club Macquarie for the 9:30 start. We set off to Kurri Kurri through Wallsend; on the way we went past the roadworks and bridge construction sites of the new F3 highway bypass to Braxton. Construction was well underway and the bridge over Wallis creek at Buchanan looks to be nearing completion. We arrived at Rotary Park in the main street of Kurri and were lucky enough to find enough parking be able park together. After claiming a table to set up our morning tea we were soon joined by Robynne and Steve Lilly and Harvey Birtwistle, we also had a visit by one of the locals from the Club, Eddie Wright, who joined us for morning tea and apologized for Ailsa who was otherwise engaged, (but we missed her bright company). Kurri has been adorned with lots of wall murals on many of the buildings around the town, and they all apparently have a kookaburra painted into the mural somewhere. Expertly (but illegally) parked at Kurri Kurri We were all trying to find the kookaburra on the mural opposite the park, when sharp-eyed Robynne located it. Several of us had photos taken under a large statue of a kookaburra in the park, fabricated in steel (see opposite). We set off from Kurri out through Weston, to Sawyers Gully and onto the Wollombi Road to Bishops Bridge, then Old North road to Lochinvar. Looking at the vegetation, the land in these areas is sandy and shallow and sets hard when dry as you can tell by the thinly wooded forest and all 20 The HUB November 2011

As we passed Lochinvar railway station there was a railway overpass under construction, part of the Braxton by-pass. We crossed the New England Highway at Lochinvar and went on to some very picturesque landscapes from Luskintyre to Maitland via Hillsborough and Rosebrook. The scenery here is magnificent with the rich pastures and the mountains as a backdrop. We went over the low level wooden bridge on Melville Ford road and on through Maitland to Largs. At the Largs Hotel we were greeted by David Merryweather, Grahame Gardiner and his friend Tim. During the lunch conversation Tim mentioned that he has a Morgan on order from the UK. Well it may not be a Jaguar but at least it s British his heart is in the right place, so we can forgive him. The lunch was nice, and as usual filled with conversation about many and varied subjects, which is the great forte of our club - good company. Another great day, well planned and organised, Thank you Ian. Bill Whitby Above: Ian Hissey s XJ-SC and Bill Whitby s S Type looking at the kookaburra Right: Coffee and tea in Kurri The HUB November

26 WHAT S THE TIME MR JAGUAR? T he recent change to daylight saving brought about the need for us, along with all other families, to change all their watches and clocks to the Eastern Summer Time. This of course includes the cars, and got me thinking about how far we ve come with cars and their controls. Inside the house, it s not that difficult, in fact it s getting very simple. Our bedside clock radio even now has a switch labelled DST, which changes the timezone from normal to daylight saving at the push of a button. One push of a button beautiful! Let s look at the Jaguars in our household: In our X Type, comprehensively fitted out with a fair degree of bells and whistles, the change requires manipulation of the fascia controls using the Mode button and the radio dials. After a few years, I X Type command centre have learned the process, but initially, this required reference to the Owner s Manual, which explains it as shown on the right. I haven t shown the previous page which explains how to get to Mode level 2! Don t worry if you don t follow it on the first run through it takes years of practice! Now, what about the XJ6 Series 2, some 33 years older? With its easily read and quite accurate analogue clock, it s a piece of cake. Two lines in the Owner s Manual is all it needs to explain it. Even a child could do it (once they figure out what a Knurled Knob is)! Which raises the obvious question: Have modern cars really made things that much better?. No doubt all the electronic gadgetry has provided a huge advance in terms of the information available to the driver, and his ability to control the operation of every aspect of the vehicle and its systems. But why must adjusting the clock be so damned complicated? Phil McLeod X Type instructions 2nd of two pages XJ6 instructions XJ6 Clock with the knurled knob 26 The HUB November 2011

27 MARK 2 OIL FILTER CONVERSION I n an attempt to stop my XK-engined pussy leaking on the road and garage floor (optimist! - Ed.), I recently purchased an aftermarket adaptor that would allow the canister style oil filter assembly fitted on my Mk2 to be replaced by a modern spin-on style. This adaptor was advertised to suit all XK motors and when ordering, I was asked to supply engine number etc. Before receiving the adaptor I removed the filter but was unable to get the original fitting out of the filter assembly, due to the space available and the risk of damaging the casting. So I elected to unbolt it from the side of the engine. The fitting was then fairly easy to remove. The new adaptor arrived within a few days, but when opened was found that to be the wrong size. After contacting the supplier (Spiteri), they apologised and advised that there were two sizes that fitted the Mk2 and it would always be a 50/50 bet on which one was right. They sent me the new (larger) adaptor overnight with a postage bag to return the other to them. Before doing this, I took some pics to assist other members who may be contemplating this minor modification. The oil filters that were purchased for the adaptor are said to be from the XK8. Adaptor cost about $125 with filter $35. Submitted by John Sullivan DVD WORKSHOP MANUALS $45.95ea plus $8 Express Post These run on XP, VISTA, WINDOWS 7 & MAC ONLY when running WINDOWS. 28 FROM THE LOOKOUT Another in our occasional series about what can be seen on the internet and in the media, that feeds our car interest. W ho amongst us doesn t from time to time surf the web drooling over cars that are for sale or auction? Cars that we d love to own, but which in most cases are beyond our reach by reason of cost, garage space, wives who have different priorities, or a combination of all these. In its most basic form, there s e-bay, then there are the various car sales sites such as carpoint.com, and the numerous websites of well known classic car dealers. There are also the classic car auction houses such as Shannons and others. Last month I stumbled on the Bonhams website which had details of their October Melbourne auction. Here s a sample of what was on offer: 1969 Jaguar E-type Series Coupe An original California delivery 1969 E-type, fully restored upon landing in Australia and professionally converted to right-hand drive, with a Moto Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel and a modern CD unit. passed a recent roadworthy inspection in Victoria 1938 SS Jaguar 100 Recreation This SS100 recreation was begun in the 1970s after the donor car was discovered in the Albury region of New South Wales. Considered beyond economic repair at the time, it was broken up and the engine, gearbox and mudguards went into another SS1 Saloon while the chassis was used to rebuild it to SS100 configuration using a high quality reproduction body by respected coachbuilders Ashton Keynes in the UK and a Mk V Jaguar engine, essentially identical to the original unit. Or, for something a little different and very special, a 1955 Bristol 403 Saloon 1956 Jaguar XK140 SE Roadster Imported from California in 1989 and converted to right-hand drive (with approval and engineering papers on file). Fitted with wirewheels, dual exhausts and foglights, this SE model has the 3.4-litre engine and 'C' type cylinder head, high speed crankshaft damper and overdrive. Part of one family for more than four decades, the car spent many years off the road following an accident and was eventually subjected to a comprehensive restoration back to original specification, with no expense spared in returning the Bristol to its former glory. 28 The HUB November 2011

29 Switching to the Shannons website yields similarly desirable motoring heaven which went under the hammer in Sydney on 10th October. Jaguar Mk Litre Saloon Old English White with chrome wire wheels and blue leather interior, 3.8-litre XK straight-six. Walnut dash and rear picnic tables. It has been fitted with an immobiliser and power steering. It has always been maintained by Jaguar specialists. Or, if those kids have been a bit hard to entertain over the school holidays... Pink Pedal Car & Caravan No further description was evidently felt necessary, nor was a vehicle test report provided! Then there is the website devoted to the Jaguar XJC which is always fascinating, maintained as it is by a private enthusiast Phil Evans. It has a page for XJC s for sale, including this example in New Zealand: 1977 Jaguar 4.2 XJC Car is in beautiful condition throughout. It has been extremely well maintained. Straight body, very good original paintwork, no rust. Mechanically perfect. Very good motor / battery / brakes / tyres etc. Interior in excellent condition. No cracks on dash, no rips on seats or carpets, all instruments work. It s not hard to find many lovely cars for sale on the web, and you don t have to go to New Zealand. A virtual trip to Queensland could take in a visit to where there s this: 1974 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 Presenting in the timeless combination of Old English White with Biscuit trim, this is a particularly original, unmolested example of the breed...has never had door speakers fitted, Indeed this Jaguar is actually fitted with its original factory radio blanking plate! Hang on, that s my car!!! Phil McLeod The HUB November

32 BREAKFAST FOR BREAST CANCER M embers met at club Macquarie for an early 7:00am start. The group, comprising Ian & Jan Hissey, Peter Dwyer, Ray Bond & Marg, John Moremon & Lyn, Above: The early morning convoy assembles at Lorn Left: Peter Dwyer, Michael Laugesen, Joyce Lawson (and small furry friend) with Jan Hissey Below: Ian Hissey, Bill Whitby, Marg Patriaca and John Moremon went through Seahampton to Kurri Kurri and on to Lorn. There we met up with Mary & Graham Cox, Rodger & Margaret Holt, Phil McLeod, Michael Laugesen & Joyce Lawson, Eddie & Ailsa Wright, and Bill Whitby & Kelly McInnes. All the cars were adorned with pink ribbons in readiness for the Breakfast for Breast Cancer display. When all had arrived and the cars had been decorated, we set off on the trip to Tucker Park at Paterson, it was an impressive sight of the ten Jaguars on a country road in the early morning sun, with pink ribbons fluttering in the breeze, but as we neared Tocal one of our members in an XK- 8888, appeared to have a problem with the accelerator in his car, but he managed to maintain stability under the perilously high speed conditions! By the time he reached Paterson the problem seemed to have rectified itself, as the car had slowed somewhat from the speed of light to a more subdued pace, although most of the pink had been drained from the ribbon on the car. At Tucker Park Paterson we had finally caught up with the rampant XK-8888 and Don Anderson in his XJ6 who was waiting there for us to arrive. Now with The Don here there were eleven cars for the display. The stewards indicated where we were to park and display the Jaguars. We all parked in a row, 32 The HUB November 2011

33 only to be advised by the steward that we were facing the wrong way, so we all turned our cars around and faced into the festivities; well all except for one blue Jaguar convertible whose owner couldn t decide which way to point his car. Eventually he realised his car wasn t facing the same as the others and turned it around too. For the first half hour or so there was much social interaction between members as we all caught up in the latest, before we went and ordered breakfast. All was well organised, with a variety of BBQ breakfast available, with hot tea and coffee and a marquee with tables for dining. There were also raffles and an auction, with all proceeds helping to raise funds for breast cancer research. The day was well attended and all looked to be a success for the organisers. After breakfast we wandered around checking the stalls and displays, after which we gathered under the shade of trees. Sitting on camp chairs much discussion went on for a couple of hours. A few had to leave a little early because of other commitments. One of our members John Moremon won a prize in the raffles. Many thanks to Kelly McInnes for organising the day for us. 42 ACJC MEETING AUGUST, 2012 The latest meeting of the delegates to the ACJC took place on Sunday, 14 th August, 2011 and here are some of the key points from that meeting. Jaguar Australia Kevin Goult, Brand Manager, Jaguar again graced the meeting with his presence for an extended period. The Council provided him with a summary list of models owned by Club members and he expressed his appreciation, stating that such as list was a very helpful part of the Club relationship into the future. Kevin spoke to delegates about the short and longer term future of Jaguar in Australia and overseas. In order to promote the marques JLRA are putting out regular press releases and using electronic media to an increasing level with very early tweets, twitter and YouTube responses by reporters and auto magazine editors. JLR globally reported a healthy profit for the previous quarter with the Jaguar marque making a significant contribution to the bottom line. The XF range is slowing in sales hurt by other releases and there are good discounts available for the 2011 model before the release of the 2012 model. The policy with the XF is to shift the range up a notch to retain value to customers. The new 2.2 litre diesel is an amazing car. Jaguars aim is to both keep the residual value of cars up and will never depart from the theme of beautiful fast cars. At present, 56% of the Australian car market is 4 cylinder cars and globally the percentage is 49%. Jaguar are still aiming at a niche market with value to the customer. The opposition is still the German trio. JLRA are planning 40 new models in the next 5 years. When the CX-75 was announced, TATA shares jumped 6% on the Stock Exchange. 250 limited edition CX-75s are to be produced. There is a JLRA factory in Pune, India which produces Freelanders and will later make other models for the local market. Jaguar will provide the sweep car for the forthcoming Targa Adelaide. JLRA is working to get all the dealers in on specific target activities such as National Rallies and is supportive of sporting events although rumours of Jaguar going back into motor sport itself are just rumours. 42 The HUB November 2011

43 The luxury car market worldwide is shrinking. The CX-75 order book is open so if anyone wants to place an order Kevin would be pleased to hear from them. JLRA expressed enthusiasm for both proposals forwarded re the National Rally in Perth the Saturday evening and the Sporting event. JLRA has already communicated this to Barbagallo. The forthcoming run from Sydney to Tasmania by an international group will include two XF diesel Jaguars which aim to do Adelaide to Melbourne on one tank of fuel. ACJC Operations. Following a recent change within our constituent members all delegates of Clubs now operate as part of their local Club Committee. This is regarded as a positive situation which assists the delegate in conveying the thinking at management level of their Club. Feedback has been that the recent letter to Club members outlining the history of the ACJC, and setting out the objectives and structure of the Committee, has been well received and is seen as part of the process to improve the knowledge of ACJC through the membership generally. The ACJC has been able to tap into the media process of JLRA and this has allowed press releases to be both added to the website and forwarded to Club editors for passing to their members. This part of the meeting concluded with a request for all Clubs or their members to tell the ACJC what they need/want. The ALO and Duties. The National Rally Manual sets out the protocol which was confirmed that the ALO does not need to get involved unless there is a debate or difference in views at Authenticity judging. The agreed approach is that the Authenticity judge gives the completed sheets to the Chief Judge who reviews them with the Entrant. If there is a problem, the ALO is asked to join the discussion and to resolve the situation. National Rallies Reports were received re the Canberra Rally in 2011 and the scheduled ones in 2012 and Concern is expressed about the difficulty of predicting the numbers who might wish to attend Rally events and then obtaining venues with appropriate room. Perth have made a calculation based on a 15% increase over the 2005 numbers. Members are encouraged to place registrations early to avoid missing out on particular events. The 2013 Rally, conducted by the JDCA, will be held at Wollongong, 80 km south of Sydney with the Novotel, which is on the beach, as headquarters. The 2014 Rally is scheduled to be run by the SA Club. A submission has been received by the Council that the Rally not include a Concours event nor a Sporting event. Given the history of the National Rally, and the expressed wishes of the other Clubs and JLRA, this request creates a challenge for the Council. The request is still under consideration/review by the ACJC who would be interested in the views of members. Concours Judging Issues. It was agreed that, for d Elegance class, windscreen stickers for registration, regulatory compliance, service or road tolls (including E-tags) would not attract a penalty. All other stickers, including advertising stickers of any sort, would attract a penalty. Number plate surrounds are not acceptable and will be penalised. The HUB November

44 With regard to mascots, and other add-ons, the agreed position reached was that If it was original or optional at factory or authorised dealer level, for that particular model of car, it is acceptable. Fire extinguishers are in this category as well. Window tinting was another point clarified. In some cars back as far as 1961, sunglare window tinting was available as an option and would be allowed without penalty. After market stick-on film was not and will be penalised. In d Etat class, authenticity of stickers is not at issue but any present would be judged for condition and cleanliness in line with the general rule that If it is presented it is judged. To avoid the position of presenting a car which has been stripped of items in order to avoid them being judged the delegates agreed on a rule which states If it involves unclipping, unfastening or requires force to dislodge it from its normal position, or requires a tool to remove or replace it, it is considered an essential element/component and is to be judged. If such components are missing, they will attract the maximum defect count. For clarity purposes, this includes hub caps, spare wheels, tool kits, door linings, seats, carpets and the like. Other suggested additions to the NRM were:- * to insert a requirement for reference books to be available at judging. Reference books for each model entered in the Concours d Elegance should be obtained and be available at time of judging. * to insert a statement in the NRM to the effect that Owners are encouraged to provide documentation in support of any doubtful or questionable changes made to, or accessories fitted or used on, their cars. Delegates have been asked to take these suggestions to their Clubs for review and feedback. It was confirmed that judging of Cleanliness and Condition should be carried out under shade cover. Whilst Authenticity judging can be done anywhere to avoid delays in judging it is recommended that not be done within the Cleanliness and Condition area. An audit of the scores and the consequent allocation of trophies is important to ensure correctness in line with the NRM. Concours. The Council has been reviewing the methods of scoring at Concours in order to address the old problem of the old car vs new car comparison. Whilst a great amount of work remains to be done some agreement and consensus was reached. They include that the changes to the system must include simplification of the scoring; the incorporation of electronic scoring to speed the process and eliminate mistakes; and the creation of a level playing field for all cars and all models. Some members of Clubs have their views as to what is wrong with the current system; the Council encourages their input as to what should be done to fix it. Financials. ACJC REPORT (cont d) The Financial Statements for the year ended 30th June, 2011 showed a surplus for the year of $3,472. This was an improvement on the previous year and was occasioned by a reduction in costs and an improved level of interest earned. Good financial management has enabled the maintenance of the Members contribution at the same level of $1.50per member for at least 5 years and no increase is predicted. 44 The HUB November 2011

58 I was recently riding with a friend of mine. We were coming to a red light, and he shoots right through it. I ask him, "Why'd you do that?" He tells me this is how his brother drives. We come to another red light, and again, he shoots right through it. I ask him, "Why'd you do that?" Again, he tells me this is how his brother drives. We come to a green light, and he SLAMS on the brakes. My heart nearly goes into my throat. I shouted at him, "Why do you do that?!" He replied, "You never know, my brother could be coming the other way." JAGUAR GARAGE 58 The HUB November 2011
