About our Club CELEBRATING 35 YEARS! The Jaguar Club of Florida (JCOF) was founded in 1977 by a small group of enthusiasts who had in common the ownership and maintenance of the World's Most Beautiful Automobiles. JCOF is proudly affiliated with the Jaguar Clubs of North America, Inc. (JCNA), an organization comprised of more than sixty clubs throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. 4 Many thanks this issue to our talented contributors: Mike Baker, Mac Ballard, John Gross, Paul Harder, Han Klinkusoom, Jim Kuhlmann, Mark Robertson, and Johanna Rosser. I encourage all members to send material for sharing. PURZZZ, Editor s Corner Greetings, Jaguar friends, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Since last issue, we held our wonderful holiday party and have a new President (Johanna Rosser) and Vice-President (Tom Wright). I have high esteem for the officers and steering committee, and entire leadership team for 2012 and beyond. After a busy 2011, I must admit that I m feeling pretty happy to be on this side of the page again. Now that the 2011 JCNA standings are final, we see that JCOF members did well in the both North American and for Southeast Regional concours, as well as several slalom categories. (See page 9) The JCOF has already held JCNA s first sanctioned event for the new year, kicking off 2012 with our recent Winter Rally. Of course, mild would be an understatement to describe the perfectly sunny weather we enjoyed while driving through the beautiful countryside. Members, Tom & Liza Wright and Tom III & Mei Wright did a superb job coordinating the club s second-ever Monty Carlo rally--full story and results inside. It was very nice to be able to actually participate on a rally team! Tom has agreed to take the reins as Rally Master so the club is very fortunate to have his leadership to keep us driving. Thanks, Tom! I know everyone is looking forward to our next outing (ice cream?) The nomination Johanna made for the Andrew Whyte award is a very thoughtful gesture, and one that would be very meaningful and touching to receive. I have met many individuals in JCNA who would be equally or more deserving of the nomination. I am in the process of nominating several JCOF members for 2011 newsletter awards. We are submitting items in all categories: Photography, Travel, Heritage, and Technical. Now, we can hope and wait until the awards are announced at the AGM in Phoenix. The JAGWire has always been a strong contender, and I hope the JCOF has many winners. Ginger Corda JAGWire Editor and Slalom Master Ginger at the JCOF Winter Rally (Photo by Han Klinkusoom) Dear Members, President s Message Thank you very much for your vote of confidence in me, and for allowing me to serve as the club s President for this year. It s almost intimidating to follow in Ginger s footsteps, but I will give it my best shot! I want to give Ginger a heartfelt thank you for the amazing job that she does for our club. Ginger puts in countless hours editing this newsletter before each issue finally comes out, and I think we all agree on how proud we can be of our newsletter it truly is a quality publication. Ginger has hosted numerous rallies for our club, she continues as our slalom master, she is the assistant JCNA web master (to name a few of her accomplishments), and her energy and enthusiasm for all club-related issues have made her very well-known all around the Jaguar circles. In fact when I nominated Ginger for the Andrew Whyte award (oh yes, Ginger, I did, and that s why I asked you all those questions) the members of the nominating committee commented on how deserving Ginger is of this award they all know her, and are aware of all of her hard work. The Andrew Whyte award recognizes JCNA members who work for the unity, cooperation and good relations within the JCNA network and Ginger s all-encompassing dedication and enthusiasm make her the ideal candidate for this trophy. The nomination form has to have the endorsement of a JCNA Board member, and for this I collected the signature of JCNA President, Dick Maury, at our slalom in November. The recipient of the award will be announced at the AGM in March. I ll keep my fingers crossed This is a special year for me as our club President as I am busy organizing our club s 25 th annual (and my very first) Concours the flyer is attached, and I hope to be receiving registrations in the mail from all of you very soon!!!!! I need help with silent auction items I ve talked a few sponsoring companies into providing a few gift certificates and other items for the silent auction, but I can definitely use more. Please call or and let me know if you have any items you are willing to donate to a good cause! 6 at RICK S CLASSIC CARS In 2011, JCOF discovered a new venue for our annual Holiday party, Rick's Classic Cars in Winter Park. It was so popular with our members that we decided to return for More than one questioned the GPS when it announced "you have arrived at your destination" as the view through the windshield was distinctly un-party like. It was only the sight of familiar motorcars that convinced some that it was safe to get out of their Jaguar in this poorly illuminated warehouse district. However the moment you walk through the warehouse door, you realize this is going to be a great party. This warehouse space has a 20 foot oak bar, with bartender. The 40 foot high ceilings easily accommodate service lifts, of which there are two, along with a few collectable cars, an office, a library, large flat screen TV's, seating areas equipped with big soft bits of leather furniture, and for our party a Christmas tree and stocked buffet. Rick himself was there to make sure things went smoothly. As we sat to eat Rick presented us with complimentary wine from the California Vineyard of Robert Mondavi. The hors d' oeuvres were popular again this year as was the gift exchange. (Continued) Page 6

This year s gift exchange was truly a team sport. When faced with the choice of taking a wrapped gift from the table or stealing an opened gift from a fellow member many choose to steal. This contrasts with the past when many members were too reserved to execute the legal heist. Perhaps it was Ginger's encouragement or perhaps it was the wine, either way it sure did provide for lively entertainment. Holiday Party, Continued We welcomed some new members, and briefly discussed JCOF business (see pg. 5) and elected Tom Wright as our new VP while Johanna takes on the role of President. One might question the welcome we provided for new members, Corey and Jennet Schaul as they were the victimized by repeated theft during the gift exchange. I hope they went home with something they liked. The event was well-attended, and it appeared that all went home with memories of a great evening with friends. Page 7

HOLIDAY PARTY Business Report By James W. Kuhlmann, JCOF The January 7th Holiday Party has come and gone but what a great time it was. This year we were all at Rick's Classic Cars in Winter Park, Florida. Let me try and remember everyone in attendance: Rick Vimmerschmidt & Maria Salgado, Tom Curren, Johanna & Jenna Rosser, Ginger Corda & Mike Baker, Dan & Marilyn Middleton, Tim Middleton, Peter & Gayl Betterman, Lou & Barbara Kairys, Tom & Liza Wright, Don & Bea Zostein, Jennet & Corey Schaul, Iris & Steve Handler, Larry & Helen Heil, Ed & Pat Pisani, Gary & Sylvia Thomas, Bill & Penny Wing, Jay & Karen Hixson, John & Janice Falco, Lydia & Justin Falco, Bill & Roxanne McCormac, Ian Crawford, Ray Pirino, Kenneth Hubble, Mac Ballard, John & Cindy Gross, Vic Hall, Paul Harder, and Evelyn Dufner, (and me). We all had a fine catered dinner (by The Event Coordinator of Orlando). Before we got to the gift exchange, Jim Kuhlmann presented Ginger Corda, our JCOF out-going President with a commemorative Plaque and thanked her for not only being our President but Editor of the award winning JAGWire, and Slalom and Rally Master. A lot of other accolades were given to our Membership Chairman Jay Hixson, Regional Director Lou Kairys, Treasurer John Falco, Technical Advisor Tom Curren, V.P. & Concours Chairman & JAGWire Assistant Editor, Johanna Rosser, Web-master Bill Wheeler, Badge and Regalia Master Paul Harder, JAGWire Art Director Mark Robertson, and British Car Day Coordinators Pete Betterman and Ed Suplick. We had a nomination from John Falco for Tom Wright to be Vice President/President-Elect for The Motion was seconded by Justin Falco. There was no discussion. Motion passes. Tom also accepted Ginger s request to be our Rally Master. I would also like to add that the JCOF has 105 members and pretty close to half of them were at the party; a record turn-out for an event. And JCOF has over $5K in the treasury. And a big thank-you to our Host and Hostess, Rick & Maria! James W. Kuhlmann, Secretary, Jaguar Club of Florida Page 8

Story by John R. Gross Photos by Mike Baker, Ginger Corda & Han Klinkusoom ather than engaging, ourselves, in the fierce competition of the JCOF Winter Rally, Han and I decided to enjoy the spirited outing by tagging along with Mac Ballard in his 96 XJ. To make Saturday s early departure more convenient, we found shelter the night before with Mac at his Kissimmee residence. SIGHTS AND SOUNDS Saturday brought a beautiful Florida sunrise for our rally start. Having gathered our provisions and warming the saloon, we set out for our first and highly-anticipated rendezvous...the scandalous Cracker Barrel. Credit for our musical inspiration of the day lies with the bittersweet sounds of Etta James. Having passed just the day before, I felt it necessary to reflect on her incredible career by drowning out the AJ-16 motor with cries from Etta of desperation and love gone sour...i m not sure the other occupants of the vehicle felt the same sentiment. Above: Janice Falco with their 1964 XKE at a nice lakeside stop. Arriving at Cracker Barrel, we circle several times to find parking in a lot crowded with many vehicles baring leaping cats and growling faces. We enter and find a group of lively enthusiasts surrounding a long table filled with emptied plates and remains of the morning feast. Post-meal smiles and shouts indicated it was safe to approach. Sitting at breakfast for a few minutes, we say our hellos and greet others before proceeding back to the parking lot for our pre-rally drivers meeting. Our winter rally brought both familiar AND new faces. Returning members included Tom & Liza Wright & Tom & Mei Wright, Paul Harder, Ginger Corda & Mike Baker, Han Klinkusoom & myself, Jay & Karen Hixson, Mac Ballard, Larry Heil (with navigator, Doug Waggoner), XKOOL E, and the Falco family. We were delighted to have new members as well. This event was the first for Corey and Jannet Schaul of Long Boat Key. I began to feel a sense of déjà vu as MY first rally with JCOF brought (then) new members Jay and Karen Hixson on our Wild Cat Poker Run. Wild as that event was, the Hixson s are not only still with us, Jay is now our Membership Chair. At the driver s meeting outside, Tom Wright, our rally coordinator, handed out materials and explained the Monte Carlo rally s general rules and expectations that lay ahead of us. We soon lined up at our starting point and each vehicle departed at precise timed intervals. Continued. Page 10

STOP 1: JAGUAR OF ORLANDO Our first stop for eye candy and an 11-mile odometer check was Jaguar of Orlando. Welcomed with refreshments, and certainly being in our environment, one can t help but ooo and aahh over the fresh XKs, XJs and XFs accompanied by Aston Martins in the showroom and on the dealership s lot. It was a great first stop! STOP 2: ALLEN S CREAMERY After drooling over the paintwork and upholstery, we positioned for our departure to Windermere in search of a mysterious Café. There are two roundabouts that a few members felt the need to repeatedly orbit, smiling and laughing! Arriving downtown, we quickly spotted Allen s Creamery & Coffee House. See www. allenscreamery.com We waited at our standoff area, then proceeded to the checkpoint as our calculated time closed in. Here we had a shaded grass field where we enjoyed a little ice cream snack while we peeked under bonnets and admired the work and care of fellow Jag owners. Speaking of care, that was our next stop! After mapping the route, we were on our way again. STOP 3: THE C.A.R.E. FOUNDATION Leaving our Windermere pit stop, we embarked on a beautiful drive through the countryside to the C.A.R.E. Foundation in Apopka. Online at (Creating Animal Respect through Education). As our chosen charity, the rally participants contributed donations to the sanctuary to support and further their worthy cause. One of the funniest had-to-be-there moments was, while approaching the enclosure of Balh-Shoy, a large male Siberian Tiger, overhearing new member Corey Schaul utter the words WHOA as he stopped dead in his tracks. That big tiger was surprisingly quiet and closeby! The animals at C.A.R.E. were looking healthy and happy to receive a candy cane or other holiday treat while we were there. Of course, we missed seeing our beloved Maya, the female adult Jaguar that JCOF adopted and supported for many years until she passed with cancer in There are many other big cats at the sanctuary now, as well as bears, foxes, birds, monkeys, etc. See the next page for several photos of some of the animals currently at the sanctuary. C.A.R.E. continues the good work of rescuing needy animals. They also provide a variety of educational programs for schools, resorts, local attractions, and general public appearances throughout the community. KITTY IN THE SAND BOX When lining up cars to leave for our next and final stop, the Schaul s supercharged XJ got off into some soft sand while circling the parking area. Being an active and healthy club, everyone who (at least THOUGHT they could help) stepped over immediately to lend a hand and free the kitten. As veteran motorists should, we each returned to our cars, thinking little of it. Who needs AAA? STOP 4: ROUTE 46 With the ambient growls of big cats behind us and that of tailpipes leading to the highway, our stomachs TOO began to growl. Our last timed run would bring us to lunch at Route 46 Entertainment District. It was nice to see the area where we will be holding our 2012 Concours and future dinner meetings. We had celebratory drinks and chowed down on some tasty fare while reliving the day s adventure. Awards followed a fine lunch and more Jaguar chatter and good times with the rally participants. See next page for photos and results, now posted to the standings on as the first official event of Thanks again to our host, Mac Ballard, and the rally coordinators, Tom Wright and family. This style of rally is working fine for the members of the Jaguar Club of Florida! Page 11

By Paul Harder, JCOF A simple, do-it-yourself modification to the clutch and brake pedals to make them more comfortable to operate. No longer raise your feet to your chest to operate the clutch and brake. All you need are a couple of wrenches to remove and reinstall the clutch and brake rods, and a rat tail file to modify the rod. Before starting, you can test to see if this modification will work on your car. Just place a 2 inch thick piece of material such as a 2x2 or a 2 inch diameter pipe on top of the rods next to the firewall. See if your clutch disengages and your brakes still work. If your brake pedal goes too close to the 2 inch spacer you have other problems that need to be addressed first. PEDAL MODIFICATION STEPS: 1. Remove the nuts and bolts holding the pedals to the levers under the hood, next to the firewall. 2. Remove the pedal and rod assembly from inside the car. 3. Use the rat tail file to cut a new slot the same size as the current slot in the rod, 2 inches toward the pedal. (Two inches seem to be optimal, anything less is not enough and more than that will cause the clutch to not disengage or the brakes to not work completely.) 4. While you are at it, this would be a good time to replace the pedal rubber with the assembly out of car, if they are worn or rotted. Right: This is what the rod and pedal assembly looks like out of the car with the new slot filed in the rod 2 inches away from the original slot. Left: View under the hood of the rod reattached to the lever. Do not cut the rod, so you can change it back if the want or need ever arises. Clutch modified with the brake still to go. And the final result -- a lot more comfortable. Thanks to Tom Curren of Coventry Classics (Longwood, FL) for this tip. Page 14
