In support of Homeland efense, egis provides a ong ange urveillance and rack (&) capability to the. pgrades to both the egis Weapon ystem and the -3 configuration enable egis provide effective, supportable defensive capability against longer range, more complex threats and an enduring egis shore defensive capability. urpose and cope of Work tandard issile-3 was developed for egis allistic issile efense () as part of the issile efense gency s allistic issile efense ystem (). he egis system integrates -3 with the egis Weapon ystem (W) aboard.. avy cruisers to provide an umbrella of protection against short to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats. -3 is compatible with the ark (K) 41 ertical aunching ystem () deployed on many.. avy and international surface combatants. he -3 is primarily used and tested by the nited tates avy and also operated by the apan aritime elf-efense orce. he -3 lock I provides increased capability, over -3 lock I, to engage short-to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. he -3 lock I incorporates rocket motor upgrades and computer program modifications to improve sensor performance, missile guidance and control, and lower cost.
