We hope you have all been enjoying your summer and beating the heat as best you can! We ve been very busy with a lot of projects here at the shop. We got a lot of feedback from our Spring Open House. Despite a little bit of unsightly weather in the morning, it turned out to be a great day! We want to thank Vince and Bob from Federated Auto Parts (aka Robbins) for setting up a booth, Johnny B for cooking some delicious food, and Deb from Stitches and Screens for selling RMR apparel if you would like to order your own RMR shirt or hat you can contact her at screensnstitches@yahoo.com. Get to Know the RMR Employees: Johnny B Meet Johnny B. Johnny has been with RMR for over six years and is a jack of all trades here. Johnny is our go to ramp truck driver. If you ve ever had your car picked up or dropped off by RMR, Johnny was the guy driving. You can also find him in the body shop working on a car. Johnny has been working on cars for over twenty five years, but aside from working on cars, John can be found working on or sailing boats, camping, cooking, SCUBA diving and being a Grandpa. 3 PAGE 3 Featured Car: 1971 Austin Sprite The great thing about working with and restoring classic cars is most times there is a great story to tell about the vehicle. For Tricia and Mike Marshall that s no exception. Tricia s 1971 Austin Sprite had been with her for many, many years, but in 1991 when it had failed a safety inspection, the Marshall s started to disassemble Gloria. Over time fixing Gloria was put on the back burner. That was until Mike took a new job opportunity taking the Marshall s across the pond from the U.K. to Canada. Gloria was shipped in a custom made wooden container to Canada. But still, Gloria s restoration would just have to wait. It took moving to five different houses in three different countries on two separate continents to finally decide restore her or let her Before picture of the 1971 Austin Sprite, Gloria go. Their final stop was in Pepperell, MA, just south of Hollis, NH. It was here that Mike came across RMR Restorations and finally got the ball rolling. They consulted with the guys at RMR and decided to have RMR repair and repaint the body while they would take care of the rest. While RMR was busy sanding, fabricating patch panels and painting, the Marshalls were busy degreasing, cleaning and sandblasting nearly 30 boxes of parts. After 8.5 months of work by RMR, the car was returned to the Marshall s home. It was an exciting and emotional day as it was the first time they had seen the car the same color and in one piece in nearly 25 years. After a bit more time of fixing Gloria up and putting her together, the Marshalls were finally able to have Gloria running like a dream. In Sept she took 2nd place in the Austin Healey Sprite Classic at the British Invasion Classic Car Show in Stowe, VT. It was a pretty impresgloria leaving RMR Restorations sive win as she was It was a long, but fun project for the Marshalls. When all was said and done, they were happy to say it was a project they were able to do together. The Marshall s with Gloria against four Bugeyes!

4 PAGE 4 Out Sourced Article: Motor Oil Warning When working with cars, it s important to keep up-to-date with all of today s advances in car care technologies. We came across this interesting article from Isky Racing Cams regarding break-in protection for all high performance flat-tappet hydraulic and solid lifter camshafts. As we ve stated before, it is always best to consult YOUR car owner s manual and do what is best for YOUR car. Not all motor oils are created equal. Unfortunately, when installing a high performance camshaft, just any oil will not give your new cam installation sufficient protection during the critical break-in period (the mating-in of virgin metal surfaces). This is because government regulators have mandated (as of January 04) the complete elimination of the critical anti-wear additive package (zinc.phosphorus) from all SM rated (street legal) motor oils to protect catalytic converters. Isky recommends the use of only the following motor oils for maximum cam lobe and lifter protection before and after the break-in period because they are the only conventional mineral based oils available with generous levels of the zinc/phosphorous additive package: Brad Penn Penn-Grade 1: The very best of all in our opinion and the only oil refined from 100% Pennsylvania crude. Pennzoil GTP Racing Oil: Excellent Do not confuse with regular grade of Pennzoil. Valvoline Racing Oil: Excellent Do not confuse with regular grades of Valvoline or Valvoline VR-1. If you do not use one of the above oils, the next best approach is to supplement other common mineral based oils with EOS (Engine Oil Supplement) available from any GM Dealership. Ask for Part No (16oz) bottle. It is mandatory to use the EOS for break-in and recommended for every oil change thereafter. The cost is about $9.00 per bottle. EOS contains a fenerous amount of zinc and phosphorous and will give whatever other motor oil you may be using a boost in protection against premature cam failure. Special Note Regarding Synthetic Oils Please note, Isky does not recommend the use of synthetic oils with any flat tappet camshaft especially during break-in. if you must use synthetic oil after break-in, there are only two brands we are comfortable recommending. They are Amzoil (Red) Racing Oil and Joe Gibbs Performance Racing Oil. Both contain zinc and phosphorous and

5 PAGE 5 Out Sourced Article: Motor Oil Warning (Cont.) will fare well AFTER break-in has been successfully completed. Other synthetics, especially those with very low viscosity index numbers (i.e. Ow-15, 5w-20 etc.) have very low film strength and are not designed for, nor should they be employed in any flat-tappet cam installation. Even when you employ the correct oil, remember that camshafts receive no direct-pressurized lubrication to their cam lobes and therefore depend on the foggy mist or splash off the connecting rods for survival. Therefore when getting ready to start the motor up, remember to immediately rev to 2500 RPM and keep it there for the first 1520 minutes of operation. Also, be sure the ignition is timed properly and fuel is in the carburetor bowl to avoid excessive cranking on the starter and pre-disposing your cam s installation to a high risk of premature wear.
