1 For Immediate Release December 4, 2008 For more information contact: Jay Dillon (770) ITBS Scores Top National Averages, Show Slight Drop From Last Year BOARD OF EDUCATION Betty Gray, Chairman John Crooks, Vice-Chairman John Abraham Holli Cash Johnny Johnson Lindsey Tippins Ron Younker SUPERINTENDENT Fred Sanderson students scored well above the national average at every grade level on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), but the 2008 composite scores declined slightly from last year despite strong performances by several individual schools. The school district administered the ITBS to students in grades 3, 5, and 8 during September. Cobb third graders had a composite score average of 70 th percentile, which means they scored equal to or better than 70 percent of all other third grade students who participated in the ITBS nationwide. Composite scores for fifth graders ranked in the 67 th percentile nationally, while eighth graders scored in the 58 th percentile. These scores reflect a decrease of 1 percentile in 3 rd and 5 th grades, and a 2-percentile drop for 8 th graders when compared to the scores of the previous year. The purpose of the ITBS is to obtain information about how the performance of Cobb students compares with that of other students across the nation. While the District concentrates most of its testing resources and attention on the high-stakes statewide Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT), the ITBS still provides valuable data about how Cobb students compare nationally and in what specific areas students may need additional help. ITBS results are particularly helpful in identifying reading or math skills where students may need additional instruction. By administering the test in the fall, teachers then have time to work with students before spring CRCT testing begins. Core subjects tested by the ITBS include reading, math, and language arts. In, third graders performed best in math where they scored in the 68 th percentile, a decrease of one percentage point from last year. Reading (63 rd percentile) and Language Arts (66 th percentile) scores similarly followed the trend of a one-percentage-point drop. Although not a part of the core total, science and social studies scores for third grade students remained the same as in the previous year (68 th percentile and 69 th percentile, respectively). Scores in the core subject areas for Cobb fifth graders increased by 1 percentage point in Reading (66 th percentile), while remaining constant in math (67 th percentile), but fell P.O. 2 ITBS December 3, one percentage point in Language (65 th percentile). Science also showed a one-percentage-point drop while Social Studies bucked the trend by increasing one percentage point. Scores for eighth grade students in Reading (56 th percentile) and Math (58 th percentile) were both down one percentage point from last year, while Language Arts scores dropped 2 percentage points to the 56 th percentile. Science (62 nd percentile) and Social Studies (56 th percentile) also experienced a one percentage point drop from the previous year. A few schools showed notable improvement over Nine elementary schools saw increases in percentile rank at the third grade of greater than 5 percentage points. Third graders at Mableton Elementary School raised the school s composite score from last year s 57 th percentile to the current 69 th percentile, an increase of 12 percent. Fifth grade students at Skyview Elementary pushed the school s composite score to the 51 st percentile from last year s 39 th a gain of 12 percentage points. The ITBS scores provide data our teachers can use early in the school year to help them identify strengths and weaknesses and assist in preparing their students for the CRCT in the spring, said Rob Benson, the district s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. It is encouraging that our students continue to surpass the national averages in every subject and at every grade level, but the data also indicate we have more work to do, especially at the 8 th grade level. The ITBS is a norm-referenced test that ranks student performance according to percentiles. For example, a student in the 75 th percentile scored equal to or better than 75 percent of all students across the nation who participated in the ITBS at the same grade level. Also reported are grade equivalents, or GE scores. The numbers in the GE score that come before the decimal represent the grade level of the student s performance, while the digits that follow the decimal represent the month within the grade. A GE score of 5.2 means the student s performance was similar to that expected of a fifth grader taking the same test during the second month of school.
