Winter Holiday Party: We re on the hunt for a restaurant that is centrally located in our region (with an available December date). Suggestions are welcome - contact the board through the website. 8 We just had our New Member BBQ Party on Saturday September 7th at Chuck and Jennifer Pierce s house. If you missed it, you missed one of our best events EVER! To refresh your memory, the idea was to have a party to welcome members who joined PCA and our Yosemite Region this year. Chuck fired up his BBQ for the Peruvian chicken and his smoker for the tri-tip. Every one else brought salads, sides and deserts. The turn out was, as Norm Swanberg our region s historian said: The best for any Yosemite event ever! Eight of our 2017 new members came and joined some of the old members. There was a total of 31 people overall and 16 displayed Porsches. We dined on chips and vegetable plates with hummus, the aforementioned Peruvian chicken and tri-tip BBQ, variety of salads, BBQ veggies on skewers, garlic bread, fruit pies and cheese cake. And, since this was NOT a driving event, beer and wine was freely available! If anyone went home hungry, they sleep through the afternoon. EL PORTAL 8 OCTOBER 2017
9 Now about those displayed cars owned by our members. Our former tresurer Larry Watson came to the event, even though he has moved out of the region. He took a nice photo of all the cars lined up on the driveway. What a collection of Porsches! To get an idea of the model year range of the new member s cars, Debra and Loren Wheale drove up in his & her 912 s, while Carrie and Jon Stone followed with their new Turbo S. The color might be mistaken, as I did, as Miami Blue, but it was a special Mexico Blue. In my opinion it was gorgeous. EL PORTAL 9 OCTOBER 2017
10 Other new members attending included: Nick Anderson with a Carrera 4S Cabriolet, Anthony and Mercedes Vierra with a 986 Boxster, Larry and Kris Kirkbride with a Carrera S, Dennis Fay with a Carrera 4, Brian Sturkie with a Carrera Cabriolet and Dave and Marianne Boyd with a Carrera S. Lets just say that Chuck and Jennifer outdid themselves with this party and what a venue. Great food, great company, great environment and the temperature was even pretty mild for the valley. Oh yea, there was this thing about cow lawn art! The idea was that you could get your car s photo taken with the cows. We held a contest to decided which car/owner would have their car/cow photo appear on the cover of our El Portal newsletter. The contest was a 10 question quiz about fun Region/PCA/Porsche facts. A copy of the quiz will be added to the end of this article. The winner was, of course, our region historian, Norm Swanberg. Almost seems unfair, right? Anyway, so Norm and Virginia, the winning couple, got their picture on the cover of this newsletter. Wow, what an event! Maybe us members enjoy having a great meal together as much we enjoy our cars? Hmmm, maybe its just like the PCA slogan goes: Its not just the cars, it s the people. Stay tuned for more events in 2018! EL PORTAL 10 OCTOBER 2017

14 1977. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index closed the year at 831. New York City was hit with a massive blackout lasting 25 hours, resulting in a baby boom nine months later! Apple released the Apple II personal computer. Jimmy Carter was elected President. Star Wars Episode IV dropped (wait, what happened to episodes I - III?) The King of Rock and Roll died from a heart attack, maybe too many peanut butter and banana sandwiches? And you could check out of the Hotel California any time you liked but you could never leave! And in Phoenix a small club of Porsche car owners held a concours event called The Phoenix Flight! Fast forward 40 years and a large club of Porsche car owners is preparing for a concours weekend called Phoenix Flight. Some things just never change! Join the celebration of 40 years of Phoenix Flight on October 27 29, 2017! On Friday, October 27th, there will be a reception poolside at the McCormick Scottsdale Resort at 7401 N. Scottsdale Road. The reception will begin at 6 p.m. Come visit with old friends and meet new friends during this 4 hour evening event. That evening we will hold a silent auction for this year s charity Guide Dogs for the Blind ( so please bring an open wallet for a great cause! Book at room at the resort at a club s special rate and party all night! EL PORTAL 14 OCTOBER 2017
15 Saturday morning, October 28th, come show your nicely cleaned and prepared Porsche in the Concours that will be held on the Streets of Scottsdale! The venue is N. But don t eat too much because the trophies will be awarded at 1:00 p.m. while everyone is enjoying tapas at the awards ceremony. The street has to be turned back to the City by 4 p.m. If you aren t entering your car, come down and join in the fun anyway, there will be a special area set aside in the adjacent parking garage for club members! The Concours is part of the PCA Zone Concours series. So here s your chance to pick up some points towards the year-end Concours results! Especially if you are coming from another Region, you get travel points. After all that, get some rest because on Sunday October 29th you will want to join in on a tour that will visit two fabulous private collections of automobiles! The proceeds from these tours will go to charity, the RPM Foundation ( All PCA members can register for these tours. You don t have to enter the concours to attend either the Friday reception or the Sunday tour. So even if you aren t into Q-tips and such you still can register for all the other events.
