4 Manufacturing process FOR HAMMERS HAMMER HEAD 1 C45 hardened and tempered steel precisely cropped to length. 4 De-burring of the blanks. 2 Hot pre-forged in a double forging die. 5 Production of the hammer eye. 8 The hammer head is sand blasted to descale and degrease it. 6 After descaling the blank, it is machined all round in accordance with DIN The pein and face of the hammer head are additionally ground. 9 Corrosion protection by stove enamelling. 3 Fully forged blank. 7 The hammer head is induction hardened to HRC and then annealed. Care has to be taken to ensure that, within a defined measured area, the hardness deviation is no greater than 5 HRC. The hardening depth on the face and pein must be at least 3 mm. The hardness of the eye zones, however, must not exceed 30 HRC. The hammer head now has hard striking faces and a soft shock absorber zone. These safety-relevant values are subject to continuous monitoring. The hammer head is permanently stamped with the manufacturer s mark, weight and DIN The hammer face and pein are ground bright in accordance with DIN Attention is paid here particularly to regular clean edges and to a slight convex geometry of the face. HAMMER SHAFT 1 Shaft blank from hickory. This tough wood has long fibres, making it ideal for hammer shafts. The long fibres cushion the impact in the hand. The tight annealed rings give the wood its flexural strength. 5 Coating with water-soluble clear varnish. 2 The square shaft blank is cut to size. 6 The hand end is set off in mahogany staining. 3 The hammer shaft is milled. 7 The shaft protection sleeve is pressed on and the shaft tampon printed. 4 The look is improved by sanding. 421

5 HAMMERS TIP: HOW CAN I TELL IF THE HAMMER IS A RELIABLE ONE? The hammer head must be correctly hardened and tempered No precision hardening and annealing - also referred to tempering - can be checked on without the use of aids. The hammer face and pein must have a hardness of between 50 and 58 HRC. Hardness must reach down to at least 3 mm. 30 HRC is not to be exceeded at the inserting eye for safety reasons. - GEDORE manufactures on the basis of the above DIN 1193 requirements and meets them at the same time. Constant tests vouch for these figures. DIN designation solely in association with the manufacturer's logo. - GEDORE stamps in DIN 1041 weight details and logo (The German equipment safety law points to the insufficiency of weight details and stamping of DIN 1041). Permanent, clear-cut fitting of the manufacturer's logo - GEDORE stamps or forges the prescribed information into the hammer head in a permanent and legible manner. Accurate 45 edge at hammer face and pein The edge - also referred to as chamfer - stops any dangerous splintering. GEDORE hammers have a clean-cut edge as conforming to regulations. Distinctive manufacturer's name on the hammer head - GEDORE inscribes its hammer heads with HB (Hermann Bremer). Assured and firm connection/fitting of hammer shaft and head Take a look:. are there any gaps between hammer eye and shaft? The wooden shaft must be secure and shake-free in the hammer head. The shaft/hammer head connection must be securely wedged. - GEDORE only uses tapered collars which ensure optimum distribution of the clamping force in the hammer eye. - The ROTBAND-PLUS system developed and patented by GEDORE turns the ordinary DIN hammer into a "safety hammer". Is the shaft fault-free? The hammer shaft is not to have any cracks, branch holes or other faults. Nor every type of wood is suitable for hammer shafts. Hickory and ash are noted as the preferred woods in DIN Only these two wood types are used by GEDORE in its own manufacturing process. Note: Rubber handgrip feature: make sure the handgrip is firmly bonded to the shaft. Try out the turning test. A handgrip which can still be turned on the hammer shaft does not meet the DIN-prescribed figures. Note: Intensive testing of steel tube, fibre glass and plastic shafts as to a firm fit in the hammer head is required. Preference is for hammers with an additionally secured head. The head is also positively fitted to the hammer shaft by means of a spring pin. GEDORE Safety: Beat for beat! 422

6 SAFETY NOTES FOR HAMMERS T Wear safety glasses and safety gloves! T Use the hammer only for its intended purpose! T Never misuse the hammer as a lever! T Before starting work, check that the hammer head is securely attached to the shaft! T Select the appropriate type and size of hammer for the work to be carried out! T Never hit two hammers together! T Never use steel hammers on workpieces harder than 46 HRC! Use suitable plastic-faced hammers for this! In case of doubt, the healthier choice is a suitable plastic-faced hammer. T Avoid bouncing blows! T Use only the work faces of the hammer! Blows with the side face damage the non-hardened hammer eye. This can loosen the grip of the shaft in the hammer head. T If a burr forms on the pein or face of the hammer head, this must be immediately removed. Failure to do this can pose the risk of splintering when the hammer is in use. T Grip the hammer shaft as far away from the hammer head as possible! This improves the impact effect and avoids vibrations. T Do not store hammers with wooden shafts in warm, dry environments! Wood is a natural product. Dry, warm storage conditions cause the shaft to lose moisture and shrink, so that the hammer shaft is no longer a tight fit in the hammer head. Opposite storage conditions also have a negative effect on the wooden shaft. Do not store the wooden shaft in too damp conditions! Too much moisture causes the wooden shaft to swell up and destroys the wooden fibres. This can result in the wooden shaft snapping behind the eye area. T Use only approved hammers for work in explosion-hazard areas! T Use only suitable GEDORE replacement shafts and wedges. WOOD IS A NATURAL PRODUCT! T GEDORE uses only wood types and timbers that comply with DIN (Wooden Shafts for Impact Tools) T Wood retains its natural properties even after processing T Trees regulate their moisture content by giving off moisture through their pores. This property is retained in processed wood. This means that a wooden hammer shaft loses moisture through its pores when the air humidity is low. T DIN defines the required moisture content of the hammer shaft at the time of joining the shaft to the head. This must be between 12% and 14% in relation to the dry weight. In-house manufacture under continuous quality controls guarantees compliance with the requirements of DIN Tip: T Before use, always check that the hammer head is securely attached to the shaft! T Never store the hammer in too dry conditions! T Storage in well-heated rooms or near a source of heat is particularly harmful, drawing moisture out of the hammer shaft, causing the shaft section to shrink. In extreme cases, the secure fit of the hammer head on the shaft can no longer be guaranteed. ADVANTAGES OF THE DIFFERENT HANDLE TYPES HICKORY HANDLES T High quality and extremely break-proof wood. Compared with ash the physical load stability of hickory is around 3-4 times higher T Long-fibre structure: More safety in the event of a handle breakage - the wood is held together by the long fibres and hence uncontrolled separation of the broken handle as well as the hammer head is avoided T Vibration dampening T Long life = very good price/performance ratio ASH HANDLES T This wood is prescribed by the DIN as the minimum wood quality T Inexpensive T Break-proof T Short-fibre structure: the short fibres in the wood mean that, in the event of a break, the shaft cannot be held together. 8 ROTBAND-PLUS HAMMER T The hammer shaft is pressed into the hammer head. T The ring wedge is pressed in to secure the shaft in the eye of the hammer head. T The round, conical form ensures an all-round, uniform pressure. T Tightening the wood screw ensures a positive fit of the safety plate with the shaft. 427 With the standardised ROTBAND-PLUS handles every standardised hammer head can be turned into a ROTBAND-PLUS hammer. WEDGES T No clamping force in the direction of motion thanks to the flat wedge. T The tapered collar evenly distributes the clamping force across 360 i.e. also in the direction of motion. The wood fibre structure is not ruined. There is no slackening of the hammer head even after several hundred strikes. 9 ROTBAND-PLUS HAMMERS A SAFE JOIN ++ The join between the hammer head and the handle is one of the most important features of the ROTBAND-PLUS. A wood screw, a tapered collar and a fixing plate ensure a permanent and safe joint. The protective steel sleeve is hardened and thus resistant to impact. It protects the handle from damage when the hammer misses its target, and gives the hammer head additional security. The hammer head corresponds to the relevant DIN standard. Following the forging process, it is carefully hardened and tempered. This is a guarantee of an extra-long service life. SAFETY PRINCIPLE The handle is hand-friendly wood, and bendresistant. This has been proven by tests carried out at the Institute for Testing and Checking (VPA) in Remscheid, Germany. 32 STRIKING TOOLS WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT GEDORE STRIKING TOOLS? F F1 Fres F2 T The striking thing about GEDORE striking tools is the 45CrMoV7 material used - one which has a 30% higher strength (under the same hardness) that the usual DIN 59CrV4 material This very much distinguishes GEDORE striking tools from the products of its competitors. This is very true indeed for nail lifters. T The material (45CrMoV7) used by GEDORE is a pure air-hardening steel which hardens at a temperature of about 850 C in still air. This material features both a high level of stability and enormous toughness. Tools cannot break even under the hardest of working conditions. T GEDORE striking tools are hot forged. T Pin punches, drift punches and centre punches are also hot forged and thus provided with a very homogeneous structure. T GEDORE pin punches always have a minus tolerance. This rules out any jamming in the drill hole. T All tools are fully hardened over their entire length. Tools cannot break even under the hardest of working conditions. T The hammer heads of our tools are electro-inductively and hence homogeneously tempered. In this way, maximum stability is achieved and splintering avoided. T The head shape of the GEDORE striking tools is optimally adapted to the radius of the hammer face. SAFETY NOTES FOR STRIKING TOOLS CHISELS T Wear safety glasses and safety gloves! T Before starting work, check that the chisel blade is sharp and the striking end is burr-free! The blades must be properly wet-sharpened!
