Suspension springs make an important contribution in respect of safety and travel comfort. Over the years, however, the surface coating can be damaged by the millions of compressions and expansions as well as stone chips or extreme loads for example such as overloading. As suspension springs are exposed to dirty and salty water largely with no protection, there is a high risk of corrosion on damaged surfaces. The possible result: impaired durability of the springs and even premature failure. The suspension springs should be checked regularly so comfort and safety do not fall by the wayside even after several years. Quality on the test stand. Before a spring goes into production, all the relevant dimensions and spring characteristics are determined and an initial test phase is conducted on the respective vehicle. Fine tuning takes place on the basis of this result: the spring is calculated precisely and further tests follow, for example such as alignment with the shock absorbers safety is the top priority. Maximum tensile strength The basis is a spring wire that has been induction-tempered and surface layer optimised and that has a tensile strength of up to 2050 MPa. Constant quality With the aid of cold shaping, the modern calculation methods and the current winding machines from the latest generation, even complex springs can be wound reliably in constantly uniform quality. Reduced tension The tensions in the material, which occur in the tempered material during the cold winding process, are reduced in an optimised low-tension annealing process without reducing the strength of the material. Optimised material tensions As a result of the pre-setting and setting process, appreciable length variation of the springs during vehicle operation is ruled out. The setting process also optimises the material tensions for long durability of the springs. This allows damage-free, easy and quick installation. After proper removal of the old spring, the pre-tensioned spring is inserted, the supporting bearing screwed on, the tensioning straps cut and the suspension strut reattached to the body support. The standing time in the workshop is thus significantly reduced. The springs, which are used only on the rear axle, resemble a barrel in their compact form hence the name barrel spring. Axle springs with inconstant wire technically display a progressive spring rate. This means that the wire diameter increases as it goes. The mini-block spring primarily stands out for the fact that the windings can lie within each other during compression, without touching. This reduces the number of active windings. Its compact design allows vehicle designers more design scope for example when planning the boot size. Because of the smaller wire diameter at the ends, the axle spring offers a high level of comfort in the case of a light vehicle load. At the same time, the increasing wire diameter guarantees supreme driving behaviour even with a high vehicle load.
