1 EEEEEEEEEEeeer4,d How Let me tell you a bit about a running joke among our family. Anytime we travel with the Miller s (Jim & Mindy) and someone needs something, Mindy has it. She always carries her magic bag. Whatever you need, she s got it in there. It s almost like the magician s hat, but without the doves and rabbits. It s more like a Walgreen s in there, what with the pharmaceuticals, firsttems, snacks, health & beauty items, greeting cards and magazines. I, for one, have been saved more than once by the magic bag. It s bottomless, I swear! The lesson to be learned here, of course, is to Volume 28 Issue 6 May 2017 be prepared! The question is: prepared for what? With what? So let s talk about what BMC you carry Friends; in your car, or maybe you The Buckeye Miata Club Memorial Drive will be held on Saturday, June 10th. The drive was originally scheduled for April 29th but was cancelled due to heavy rain that day. This tradition was started more power by continued Rob and. Amy..... Young,.... two founding members of our Club. After Rob's passing, this came to be known as the Rob Young Memorial Drive. Since then, it was decided to make this drive in honor and memory of all Club members we've known and lost over the years. We will meet at Der Dutchman in Plain City on SR 42 (please park out in back of the restaurant, on the east end). We have arranged for a dining area for our group (if you plan to have breakfast at DD, please schedule your arrival time accordingly! Joining us about 9am would be a good idea.). Afterwards, we'll meet out at our cars about 9:45am, followed by a driver's info meeting about 9:50am. We'll depart at 10am to follow backroads east and south out of Plain City, skirting the south boundaries of West Jefferson, London and South Charleston, on to the Clifton Mill. At the Mill, following use of their "facilities", we will have a memorial gathering in remembrance of those members who have passed - Miata owners and friends who shared our driving passion. Afterwards, we will continue on to Yellow Springs, passing an old mill converted to a bed & breakfast, passing a covered bridge, and driving through another! After driving through Yellow Springs, we will gather for lunch at the Golden Jersey Inn on US-68 north of town. Come and join one of the largest and THE longest running annual gathering of Miatas in the country! There will be vendors, free food, beer swaps, drives to area attractions (both natural and man-made), and of course... great roads, great people and great cars! 4 4 Volume 28 issue 6 President s Corner This past Saturday, May27th, was a great day for a number of reasons. First, it did not rain (much). Second, it was the date for the 2017 version of the RiverRun. This drive, originally organized by Eric Jones and now held in his memory continues to raise money for cancer reseach at OSU. Eric was a local mechanic of classic autos, a rally enthusiast, and a total character in the best sense of the word. As we have in the past, the Buckeye Miata Club agreed to be a sponsor of the drive providing financial support for printing material. Our total commitment of around $ helped raise over $ for cancer research into mesothelioma. There was great participation from our club. We not only supported the effort financially, we supported the drive with people and cars. But this was not just a central Ohio effort. Miata clubs from Cleveland and Toledo also participated. Of the 76 cars that made the drive, the vast majority were Miatas. It was a great sight. As always it was fun caravanning with our group but it was also fun somehow winding up in the middle of the Toledo group for a portion of the drive. At least until they made a wrong turn. At a time when it is harder and harder to get people in general to participate, it is comforting to note that the Miata folks from around the state are there. We can look forward to at least two more events this year with our friends from the North Coast Miata Club. In July we have a drive to Marietta and in August the Meet In The Middle picnic at Mohican State Park. As with the RiverRun, let s make both of these, events to remember. MARIETTA TOUR Bev and I and John James are planning on hosting a three (3) day tour to Marietta, Ohio later on this summer. This tour will be scheduled for Friday, July 21 st through Sunday, July 23 rd and will include both the Northcoast Miata and Buckeye Miata Clubs. We will be meeting up at a to-bedetermined location in the Zanesville area for lunch on Friday followed by a back road tour to Marietta. Our itinerary will include a guided tour of historic downtown Marietta on Saturday morning followed by another guided tour of The Castle and The Mound Cemetery that afternoon. For those who prefer not to participate in the walking tours, a film presentation will be available in the tour office at the Lafayette Hotel. We also plan on having a group dinner that evening at the Lafayette Hotel. We have already reserved a block of rooms at the historic Lafayette Hotel for both Friday and Saturday night under The Miata Club. We were limited on the number of rooms that could be reserved due to a large wedding party that will be staying at the hotel the same weekend. If there are insufficient rooms available at the Lafayette Hotel, several other hotels are available on I77 just east of Marietta. Carl Pemberton, manager of internet sales at Tim Short Mazda on International Drive here, says his store has two Mazda MX-5 RT's in stock this Memorial Day weekend, including a white Grand Touring model much like our Machine Gray factory tester. Honestly, we did. It's certainly not to be found in the curvaceous, Porsche-like sheet metal; or in the sweet, 2- liter Skyactive engine. Nor is there any fault to be found in the ingenious fold-away targa top, or the blissfully simple switches and gauges, or the glove-soft leather seats. No, the only teeny flaw we could find in the Miata RF were the unremarkable (ok, flimsy) plastic sun visors. "We sell them super fast," says Pemberton, who notes that the new-for-2017 RF (retractable fastback) has eclipsed the popularity of the traditional Miata roadster soft-top. If you are lucky enough to purchase a new RF, you will spend the first month showing off the automated roof, a 13-second process that involves a lift-away fastback panel that shifts backward while the targa panel ducks into a storage hole behind the seats. The process looks like a scene from a Transformers movie. The roof can be raised or lowered as the car travels speeds up to 6 mph. Flipping the roof toggle on the fly is sure to attract attention. Anecdotally, we have noticed that the twoseat Miata is the car most likely to be owned by automotive journalists; which is quite an endorsement. People who drive cars for a living gravitate to the MX-5. It makes sense. Since its introduction in 1989, the MX-5 has gained a reputation for being a reasonably-priced, insanely fun-to-drive sports car. That it also embodies traditional Mazda reliability is a deal sweetener. Continued on next page Wait, but who needs sun visors in a car built for sun worship?

7 7 Volume 28 issue 6 DESIGN AND FEATURES The automotive press seems to be in general agreement that the new Miata RF is the sexiest MX-5 Mazda has ever produced. The fastback roof-line is simply stunning, leaving some comparing the Miata RF to a poor-man's Porsche 911 targa, which starts at about $90,000. Even with the targa top stowed, the fastback panels remain in place and define the car's profile. Purists may balk, claiming the soft-top roadster (a full convertible) is the only true Miata, but even Mazda predicts at least half of MX-5 sales will be these new targa-top models that look like coupes. Just riding around town, the rear-wheel-drive RF is a certified head-turner. Frankly, it looks like an all-new Miata. The traditional MX-5 bodywork does not attract nearly as much attention. We found ourselves circling the car again and again admiring the lines, especially the rear third of the car, which is energized by the fastback design. Evolutionary upgrades to the interior of the Miata have made it much more comfortable over time, perhaps a concession to the aging baby boomers who have always been the MX- 5's most reliable customers. Our grand touring version has such upscale amenities as heated side mirrors, remote keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring, crosstraffic alert, a Bose 9-speaker sound system, satellite radio, navigation, a 7-inch color touch screen, heated seats, and adorable little rainsensing windshield wipers. DRIVING IMPRESSIONS At the end of the day, the MX-5 Miata is a perfectly balanced sports car that sometimes feels more like an exoskeleton than an automobile. Sliding into the driver's seat almost feels like putting on a mechanical suit that will move with your body. The MX-5 is powered by a normally aspirated, 2.0-liter engine that pours out 155 horsepower. While every car-maker seems to be churning out turbocharged engines, there is something delightfully simple about the Miata's non-turbo power-train. Our tester, which retails for $34,310, is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission which will be the right choice for most enthusiasts. Long recognized as one of the smoothest shifting cars on the planet, the Miata ticks through its gears with dutiful precision. The Miata can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, which is quick but doesn't do justice to the actual driving experience. Agility is where the MX-5 really shines. Its near weight distribution makes it a delight to pilot through twisting roads. BOTTOM LINE The retractable fastback option adds $2,755 to the price of a base Miata, which seems well worth the money when you consider the technology involved and the all-season advantages of a hard top. A base Miata roadster starts at $25,790 and our highly-optioned targa has an MSRP of $34,300. The government says to expect 33 miles per gallon highway and 26 miles per gallon city. The MX-5 competes with the mechanically similar Fiat Spider, the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86.
