5 Indian Steel Industry in April-January : A Performance Summary The following is a status report on the performance of Indian steel industry during April- January , based on provisional data released by JPC. It is to be noted that total finished steel includes both non-alloy and alloy (including stainless steel) and all comparisons are made with regard to same period of last year, unless otherwise mentioned. Qty (mt) % change* Production for sale Import Export Consumption Crude Steel Production Source: JPC, *over same period of last year I. Crude Steel: During April-January , crude steel production was million tonnes (mt), a growth of 4.2% over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced mt this period which was a growth of 6.3% over same period of last year. The rest i.e mt came from the Other Producers, which was a growth of 1.5% over same period of last year. Overall crude steel production in January 2018 (8.778 mt) was down by 0.4% over January 2017 and was down by 0.2% over December II. Hot Metal: During April-January , hot metal production was million tonnes (mt), a growth of 2.1% over same period of last year. Secretary s DO Report (Flash Report) JANUARY 2018 (FY ) 4
6 SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced mt during this period which was a growth of 3.9% over same period of last year. The rest i.e mt came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 5.7% over same period of last year. Overall hot metal production in January 2018 (5.745 mt) was up by 6.2% over January 2017 and was up by 0.6% over December III. Pig Iron: During April-January , pig iron production for sale was million tonnes (mt), a decline of 0.6% over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 468 thousand tonnes during this period which was a decline of 41.4% over same period of last year. The rest i.e mt came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 1% over same period of last year. Overall production for sale of pig iron in January 2018 (0.787 mt) was down by 1% over January 2017 and was down by 0.9% over December IV. Total Finished Steel: A. Production for sale Production for sale of total finished steel at mt, registered a growth of 5.3% during April-January over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced mt during this period which was a growth of 9% over same period of last year. The rest came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 6.3% over same period of last year. Overall production for sale of total finished steel in January 2018 (9.543 mt) was up by 5.7% over January 2017 and was up by 6.6% over December B. 7 Overall exports in January 2018 (0.616 mt) was down by 30.8% over January 2017 and was down by 36.1% over December C. Imports Import of total finished steel at mt in April-January was up by 5.5% over same period of last year. Overall imports in January 2018 (0.335 mt) was down by 44.5% over January 2017 and was down by 40.4% over December India was a net exporter of total finished steel in January 2018 as also during April- January D. Consumption India s consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 5.4% in April-January ( mt) over same period of last year, under the influence of rising production for sale and imports.
