1 The Salvage Synthetic Line System consists of numerous lines with physical/performance characteristics that can be applied to various lifting, mooring, rigging, or other applications during salvage operations. The synthetic lines are made of several materials and constructions, each of which has unique characteristics of strength, weight, stretch, chafe resistance, and flexibility. The line type and size needed for the assigned salvage task is determined by the onsite supervisor to satisfy the many constraints of the salvage scenario (depth of water, mass of object, recovery equipment used, etc.). The line fiber material may be aramid, nylon, polyester, or polyethylene, and the construction may be multi-strand, single or double braid. Lines are available in various lengths, line diameter, material, onstruction, and can be obtained with soft or hard eyes, thimbles, links, or other end fittings, as determined by the onsite requirements. Aramid fiber (e.g., Kevlar) line is a high-strength, low-stretch, multi-fiber line. The strength members of the line are contained within an outer braided cover. The line is used for lifting heavy loads in deepwater salvage applications because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. The line has limited resistance to abrasion. Care must be taken when designing the salvage system in sizing and aligning blocks, sheaves, and lifting components. Aramid fiber line can be obtained in diameters of 3/8, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 and 2 inches, and in lengths of up to 24,000 feet, with soft or hard eyes, thimbles, links, or other end fittings, as determined by onsite requirements. Aramid fiber line is shipped on a wooden or metal reel, as requested. The shipping weight and volume will be determined by the diameter and length of the line and the reel required to store it.
