6 The B&R History A company built for the future B&R Enclosures is Australia s leading manufacturer of electrical enclosures, with a comprehensive range of products designed for industrial conditions and suitable for the Australian environment. B&R Enclosures was founded by Dick Bridges in 1955, specialising in the sheet fabrication including electrical enclosures for domestic metering applications. With little capital but great enthusiasm for operating his own business and a determination to succeed, Dick commenced operations in his backyard in Adelaide South Australia. It was this family determination that has sustained B&Rs growth into manufacturing plants in Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney, 10 locations nationally and an international network of distributors, allowing them to increase the range, availability, quality and service to their customers. Now under the direction of the founder s son, Ken and daughter, Chris, B&R Enclosures has grown to be the largest manufacturer of domestic, commercial and industrial enclosures in Australia. The company remains an Australian family owned and operated business and encompasses four divisions: B&R Industrial, B&R Data Systems, B&R Domestic Commercial trading through Hager B&R and B&R Ex Systems Pty Ltd. Each division has a focus on unique needs of different market segments. Together these divisions share the strengths, resources and experience of the founding company to provide attentive customer service, innovative design and superior quality products at a competitive price. From an early stage, B&R Enclosures was a dedicated domestic metering enclosure manufacturer for the Australian market. Today B&R manufacture products for a variety of industries and applications. B&R s offering to the market includes electrical enclosures for residential and commercial buildings, new infrastructure developments, industrial controls, mine processing, oil and gas industry and data centres. 4 Introduction

7 In 1994, B&R Enclosures started a successful partnership with Hager, a European electrical solutions manufacturer to offer the Australian domestic and commercial markets a full range of high quality enclosures and switchgear. The Hager B&R joint venture continues to be strong. In 2006 B&R Data Systems was established catering for the specific needs of the data and communications market. This division is backed by the manufacturing, sales and distribution network of B&R Enclosures with the addition of an experienced, dedicated sales and product development team. B&R s offer was further increased with the establishment of B&R Ex Systems Pty Ltd in This new business subsidiary has the focus on selling hazardous area electrical equipment into chemical, oil, gas and dust filled applications. The development of B&R Ex Systems has meant investing in highly qualified staff and B&R s third factory, Riverwood Sydney. As an Australian manufacturer B&R continually faces the challenge of foreign products flooding the market. B&R has been able to maintain its manufacturing position in the market by ensuring their enclosures are of a superior standard in both quality and design. Understanding the special requirements of each customer is what sets us apart from our competition. B&R Enclosures technical support team has developed a detailed understanding of Australian standards and regional authority specifications, so that standard products will meet the vast majority of requirements. Our aim is to work with our customers to ensure they have an enclosure solution to suit budget, application and needs. We offer a standard range of enclosures however, if an enclosure is not suitable we will work with you to design a custom product to fit the requirements of the application. All custom-made products offer a Total Engineered Service including the provision to mount and wire componenets into enclosures and the ability to supply fully type-tested switchboards and motor control centres with ASTA certification. 10 Manufacturing Enclosure No compromise Design on quality From design through to manufacturing, our designers and engineers do not compromise on quality. This ensures that the final product is not only functional but durable and long lasting. Superior Corrosion Protection B&R s enclosures are built to provide superior corrosion protection to meet the demands of Australian conditions. Our enclosures go through a four part protection process to extend the product life and to provide maximum protection for your equipment. This protection process goes right through from the selection of materials, to the final paint finish. Premium grade zinc coated steel is the main material used in B&R s range of Australian made enclosures. Tests show that when materials are scratched and exposed to a corrosive environment, zinc coated steel prevents the painted surface from peeling, and corrosion from spreading through the material. This can mean a significant increase in the working life of an enclosure. B&R s stainless steel enclosures use primarily 316 grade stainless steel which offers superior protection against the most common corrosive agents produced by the Australian environment. Our manufacturing processes have been accredited by the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA) to assure our customers have the highest quality products. Superior Gasket & Sealing B&R s specially formulated gaskets, together with our hallmark enclosure sealing system, have been designed to provide the best and most consistent seal in the industry. Our gaskets are Foamed-in-Place (FIP) with state of the art robotic technology, so that the polyurethane is accurately placed and formed on the sealing surface. This process ensures that the gasket is applied continuously and consistently which avoids leakages and ensures long-term adhesion to the metal surface. 8 Introduction

11 B&R s enclosures have an advanced sealing system that has been designed to reduce maintenance over the working life of the enclosure. Our sealing system (as shown on the right) has a wide gutter and flat face allows for a greater sealing surface to extend the life of the gasket, while preventing water and dust from entering the enclosure. Multiple Application Powdercoating Process All metallic powdercoated enclosures manufactured are powdercoated using a modified polyester paint and conform to our in-house testing procedures. 12 Latest Innovations Leading the way in product design B&R Enclosures invests heavily in design and manufacturing technologies to ensure the products offered are at the cutting edge of the industry. Rail Enclosure B&R Enclosures have developed a range of enclosures specifically designed for rail projects in isolated and often challenging environments. All protruding external parts such as door handles have been designed flush with the enclosure to reduce the risk of vandalism. Another feature of B&R s rail enclosure is the internal components which allows the contractor to mount their own frame inside.to ensure equipment is kept cool the enclosure features ventilation and sunshield over the body of the enclosure. Industrial Communications Enclosure The industrial communications enclosure has been designed through close consultation with the mining industry to service a need for a robust enclosure for underground telecommunications. It is manufactured from 316 grade stainless steel and features side and top mounting flanges, sloping roof, LockSock and an ergonomically designed internal mounting panel. 10 Introduction

13 Data Centre Security Cage There is often a need to enhance data security between customers within a data centre environment, data cages are a method of segregating customer racks and equipment into defined zones. Using standard sized components to achieve cage heights of 2400 or 2700mm, the data cage can be tailored to suit the requirements of any data centre. Multiple Application Cold Aisle Containment Cold aisle containment is a method of increasing a data room s cooling efficiency and reducing power consumption. Efficiency is increased by keeping the cold and hot air separated. Having the cold aisle contained means the area requiring cooling is smaller and therefore less power is required to keep it at the correct temperature. The standard Signature SE product incorporates modules that are vented in the left hand side to allow ionised gases to expand during arcing. 160 Information Enclosure Selection Things to consider when selecting the right enclosure Choosing the right enclosure can sometimes be a difficult task. We have locally trained field consultants to assist you when selecting the right enclosure to suit your application. 1. Enclosure size Ensure ample room to accommodate equipment. 2. IP Rating Consideration needs to be given to the level of protection for persons against access to hazardous parts, of equipment against ingress of solid foreign objects (including dust) and the harmful ingress of water. Refer to IP Rating Chart on page Application & place of installation Indoor or outdoor (thermal or UV light considerations) and the presence of corrosive agents in the atmosphere will affect the enclosure required. See Chemical Resistance Table on page 283 for more information. 4. Type of material & finish B&R Enclosures offer a range of materials and finishes including powdercoated zinc coated steel, aluminium, 316 stainless steel and non-metallic (thermoplastics and glass reinforced plastics). There are also a variety of powdercoat paint options see page 277 for more information. 5. Mounting & access for installation and maintenance It is important to consider whether the enclosure will be wall or floor mounted and what access is required for installation and maintenance. 6. 162 Information Material Specification Selecting the right enclosure material Our products use only high quality materials and a finishing process designed to maximise the longevity of the enclosure. Selecting the right enclosure material can be confusing with a variety of options including plastic, steel, aluminium or stainless steel and varying thickness and grades. One of the most influential factors in selecting enclosure material is the location. To assist you in selecting the right enclosure material we have created this guide. What is the installation location of your enclosure? Indoor location with no gas, chemical contaminants or fine dust present. Generally any enclosure material would be suitable an enclosure choice would be based more on the type of equipment going inside and the IP rating (protection from dust and water ingress) rather than the material used. Base on cost, the most appropriate material would be plastic or zinc coated steel. Indoor or outdoor location with gas, chemical contaminants or fine dust. If the location is exposed to gas or other chemical contaminants 316 stainless steel is generally suitable however, chemicals can react differently to various materials. If the enclosure is exposed to fine dust 316 stainless steel would be the most suitable option to avoid possible corrosion. If the area is classified as hazardous (potentially explosive atmosphere) an explosion-proof or increased safety enclosure may be required. These are typically made from high grade stainless steel but you will need to ensure the enclosure is certified for hazardous areas. 278 Information

163 Outdoor location (non-coastal) with no gas, chemical contaminants or fine dust. An aluminium or zinc coated steel enclosure could be suitable. Plastic enclosures can also be used in an outdoor environment, although there is often a staining of the plastic due to UV exposure however, this will not affect the structural integrity of the enclosure. Coastal location with high salt deposition. The use of metal enclosures along the Australian coast is common and often incorrect materials are selected on price and fail due to corrosion. Typically the corrosion is caused by chloride attack from salt water. This can dramatically affect mild steel and even lower grade stainless steel enclosures. Generally 316 stainless steel is the most suitable for coastal areas, but this will be dependent on the salt deposition of a particular area. AS specifies that stainless steel should be used for structured areas where there is salt deposition of over 60mg/m2/day. Aluminium also offers a high degree of corrosion resistance. Outdoor location with high salt deposition (non-coastal). These areas are typically related to mining regions. These areas are subject to a high risk of corrosion which can dramatically affect mild steel and even lower grade stainless enclosures. 164 Information Material Specification Grade 316 Stainless Steel B&R Enclosures choose only the best materials when manufacturing our enclosures. This superior quality ensures you can trust the product and B&R. The main benefits of using stainless steel are its structural strength, aesthetic appeal and high level of corrosion protection due to naturally occuring chromium-rich oxide film formed on the surface of the steel. Grade 316 stainless steel can be used successfully in coastal locations where many other grades may experience corrosion due to the higher levels of chlroide present in the environment. It is also the preferred material used in food processing applications, it can be easily cleaned and resists many organic chemicals, dyes and a wide variety of inorganic chemicals. B&R Enclosures use onl the highest quality materials, manufacturing and finishing techniques and are accredited by the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA). For more details on ASSDA visit Surface Finish We finish our stainless steel products in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and also ensures superior protection. We apply an N4 surface finish, with a maximum Ra or 0.4µm. This Ra rating is a key factor in the corrosion protection and cleanability of our products. Surface corrosion, often referred to as tea staining is common along the coast fringe and high salinity areas of Australia. Tea staining is a discolouration of the metal surface which is unsightly, but does not affect the structural integrity of the enclosure. The use of a lower Ra than is traditionally used for enclosures ensures these effects are mininimised. 165 Zinc Coated Steel We use primarily zinc coated steel for our B&R branded products. This is a matte, hot dipped, zinc iron alloy which when combined with chemical pretreatment and powdercoat finish offers the best possible corrosion protection for enclosure systems. Pretreatment A B&R branded zinc coated steel enclosure is punched, bent, welded and ground on the way through our factory. Following fabrication it goes through an automated process which consists of the following: Alkaline cleaner Reticulated freshwater rinse Iron phosphate coating Reticulated freshwater rinse Demineralised water with polymer additive Titration tests are also conducted to ensure that the material meets the required specifications. Powdercoat Finish The powdercoat paint is applied at an average coating thickness of 100µm for a ripple finish and 70µm for a gloss. The minimum coating thickness is 60µm on the exterior of the enclosure and 25µm on the interior (conforms to AS/NZS 4506:1998). Testing The powdercoat paint finish is tested extensively to the following standards ensures consistent paint finish in terms of both quality and colour across our range of enclosures. 168 Information Hazardous Areas A hazardous area is an area where flammable liquids, vapours, gases or combustible dusts are likely to occur in sufficient quantities to cause fire or explosion. Industries such as metalliferous mining, oil and gas infrastructure, automotive refuelling stations, chemical processing plants, printing industries and cement works often have hazardous applications. There are three basic conditions that must be satisfied to create a fire or explosion. 1. Flammable or combustible material such as flammable liquid, vapour or combustible dust must be present in sufficient quantity and concentration. 2. Oxygen 3. Ignition source Hazardous area electrical equipment works by suppressing or separating one or more of these three components to avoid a fire or explosion. 169 Information Hazardous Areas Zone Classifications Equipment that is used in hazardous areas is classified into zones, depending on the potential of an explosion under normal operating conditions. The table below is a guide to zone classification of hazardous areas. B&R Ex Systems does not classify areas for customers, it is the responisbility of the installer or end user to know which zone their area falls within. 170 Information Hazardous Areas Temperature or T Rating Hot surfaces are a potential ignition source in hazardous applications. Hazardous materials will have different minimum temperatures at which ignition becomes a danger. Electrical equipment for hazardous areas is tested and allocated a T Rating based on the maximum temperature of the equipment. The T Rating must always have a lower maximum temperature than the ignition temperature of the gas group present. Table 1: provides a summary of the maximum temperatures for the different ratings. 171 Information Hazardous Areas Combustible Dust Dust fibres or flyings, which are combustible or ignitable when mixed with air are known as combustible dusts. Dust explosions may be initiated by ignition of a cloud of dust. It is not unusual for an explosion, which starts from the ignition of a dust layer, to cause the dislodging of dust accumulated on various surfaces, which then leads to a dust cloud explosion.
