4 STARTING LINE- EDITOR It looks like I made a few mistakes in the March El Portal, such as you probably noticed that your copy in the mail came dressed in a lot of stamps. It was because I tried to get creative with the back cover by making it more like a magazine (vertical advertisement) and less like a newsletter. I liked where I was going with it, but then the post office lady said umm I think you need more stamps, because the side with the address on it is set up vertically and not horizontally. So I had her go get her manager and the manager said you will just have to put these two stamps on all of them. So I did it and told Paul Czopek about it and he told me, yep, lesson learned. The next day all of them came back, so I marched over to the post office and explained what I was told (by the manager). There was a different manager on this day and she was all apologetic, but said there was nothing she could do. I would have to buy 3 more stamps (that added up to 26 cents) for each newsletters. I said listen woman (with my finger waving) I got to get these babies out! Power to the people and the people demand their newsletter. They are going to go crazy tipping over cars and climbing light poles. Then the next day eight more came back, so I went back over there and they said they would run it through again. Next day got one back, so again I took it over and that was it, finally got them all out. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I also made the mistake in the March copy of calling Darin Fister s shop FP Motorsports when it is FD Motorsports. I would like to apologize for that and thank him for allowing me to interview him last minute when I could not get anyone else nailed down for the new interview article. This is the first El Portal where we introduce the idea of interviewing people and putting it in the newsletter (Steve Searles and Chris Dias thought it up). I would like to get Yosemite members to write in with stories they may have. We will call it My First and it can be my first sight of a Porsche or when you first fell for the make, my first Porsche, my first ride in a Porsche, my first autocross in my Porsche, my first drive where I truly got the Porsche experience, my first whatever. We need people to RSVP for Fioli or it may get canceled. 4

Ads submitted must be camera ready. If your ad is not camera ready, this service can be arranged at no extra charge. Charges for twelve months of advertising are payable after billing by the Yosemite Region treasurer. Advertising on a monthly basis (space permitting) may be puirchased at a cost of 10% of the annual rate. All advertising must be paid for in advance of publication. 8

10 UPCOMING EVENTS Drive to Filoli When: April 20 th Starting location: We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Shell station (25460 W. Schulte Rd. Tracy, CA) at the corner of West Schulte Road and Mountain House Parkway in Tracy. We will be leaving the Shell station at 9:30 am. Directions to the Shell Gas Station: Get off the 205 at Mountain House Parkway and head south for about 1.5 miles. OR Get off the 580 head north on Mountain House Parkway for about ¼ mile. Upon arrival at Shell station please fill out insurance waiver. We will be following Route 84 for the majority of trip and should arrive at Filoli at around 10:30 am. Most everything should be in bloom and will be one of the best times of years to visit. It should be a nice scenic drive at a moderate pace. We will be stopping for a rest stop about 45 minutes into the drive at Jack in the Box after crossing the Dumbarton Bridge. When we arrive at Filoli please head to visitor s center to purchase entrance ticket and lunch. Entry fee: $15 65 and older $12 East Bay students and teachers $5 Children under 4 are free 10

11 Tour de Rhododendrons Mendocino, CA April 5-7, 2013 Hosted by Diablo Region Join us in a celebration of Rhododendrons. Rhododendrons flourish in the cool air and acid soil along the California coastline. They bloom from February through June in a stunning array of color. Mendocino Gardens, located between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, houses a spectacular display not to be missed. Starting location: Solano Square Shopping Center, Benicia, CA Start time: 9:00 am, Friday, April 5, 2013 bring lunch or food to share at lunch. The route will take us to Pt. Reyes station where we will refresh and regroup before we head up 101 to lunch at the Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve, weather permitting. (Alternate arrangements will be made if it rains.) 19 CHECKERED FLAG Interview: Darin Fister of FD Motorsports What got you interested in Porsche s DF: Since I was a little kid it was a car I was always drawn to. I had a poster on my wall of a 944 and a 911. It was just something that I dreamed I would own some day. What is the most exciting car in your opinion you have worked on DF: 1997 RUF 911 Turbo R. The car is amazing beautiful fast. It is a gorgeous car. What was your job prior to FD Motorsports DF: Metal fabrication. I was a Metal Fabricator General Engineering Contractor. When or how did you decide to start FD Motorsports? DF: 9 years ago. I always had a love of these cars and always loved to work on cars. I bought my own started working on it. Then I started building modifications for it. It took off from there, because people started seeing the modifications and wanting them for their own cars. It just grew so fast and so large that I had to start a company. There was no other way around it. What is FD Motorsports niche or specialty DF: Exhausts and shift kits for 993, 996, 997 and Boxsters. Favorite Drive to take in Northern California DF: Oh boy, there have been a few great ones. New Years Eve drives that are put together are always fantastic. There have been a couple of great ones up near Napa. I don t know, any day when you can get out and drive with a couple of guys with Porsche s is great. Now the question I shouldn t ask. What one Porsche do you wish you owned? DF: Oh man narrow it down to one? If money was no object? Would I love to own a 73 RS? Absolutely! Would I love GT3 RS? Absolutely! Carrera GT? Sure, I would probably end up selling it and buying a couple of others I really love. There are just too many choices. 19
