What a crazy month this past month has been. I raced, backpacked, got swarmed and saw a Playtypus. Our Zone 7 autocross was a great time as usual. Rain threatened us all day but never made it to the course on Saturday. Our annual dinner event was fun. I got to meet Ralph and Linda who came down from Grass Valley for the event. On Sunday I realized that Curtis Robertson had beat me the day before in his well prepared 914. We went at each other again Sunday and I'm not sure I would have beat him if he hadn't pulled out of his run group early. Great driving Curtis! My son came home from college so we had a chance to go backpacking on a small stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail. It was his first backpack trip so I didn't want to push him too hard. We managed about five miles in and back to a tiny lake just outside the Lassen Volcanic National Park. When we got back to town a swarm of bees had taken over our apple tree. Watching the beekeepers deal with the swarm was very educational. Those bees are busy now making honey for the Qunicy farmers market. Last weekend I went to the Sonoma Historics where we host our Porsche corral every year. Kurt Fischer hosts the corral every year and is there to welcome and entertain our fellow Porsche enthusiasts. I watched the morning run groups and walked through the racers prep area taking in the sounds and smells. In the program for the event I saw there was a Porsche Platypus...a what? Really Kurt? Then Kurt told me there was something called a Porsche Pooper. Come on! You're joking. No, there really is a Platypus and a Pooper (Mini Cooper/ Porsche, get it?). The lakes are full. The roads are dry. Get your Porsche to an event before this summer says goodbye. Shift Toward Adventure, Jamie P r e sidents Message by Mike Hinton, President

With the passing of Memorial Day, we're unofficially into the summer season! For me, summer has always been about driving, and this year is no exception. My unofficial kickoff to the summer driving season was the 2016 version of Targa California, and this year, fellow Redwood Region members Vern Rogers and Tom Strobel joined me on the drive. The drive had a bit more adventure than I had bargained for (the starter on my 914 died, and the engine ran INCREDIBLY hot the entire time), but the driving, nearly 1,600 miles in all, made it all worthwhile. The highlight of the trip was some very spirited parade laps around the Buttonwillow race track. If you have a pre 1976 vehicle, the Targa is a must do for all enthusiasts. The Redwood Region already has a couple of autocross events in the books, with plenty more to come. I was able to participate in the April and May events, and am having a great time terrifying myself in my new to me GT3. We have another autocross event on the horizon (June 18), which promises to be fun. Unfortunately, I will be missing that event due to the BIG road trip of the year. I'm planning to drive the GT3 to Porsche Parade in Jay Peak Vermont. It should "only" be about 3,300 miles to get there... After Parade, Craig Steele and I will return via the Lincoln Highway, which was the first cross country highway in the United States. We plan to stick to the original, 1913 route to the extent possible. There should be some good pictures, stories, and meals ahead! Although I'll be out of town, I urge all of you to attend the Porsches on the Plaza event, held in the downtown square of Sonoma on June 25. It's essentially a low key car show, and gives you a chance to show off your ride in a non competitive setting. There is a wonderful park adjacent to the parking area, so bring a picnic lunch and liquid refreshments, and take the opportunity to mingle with your fellow Redwood Region members! I should add that all of the proceeds from this event are donated to our designated charity, CASA, and CASA will have a presence at the event. Once I return from the big driving adventure, I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at an autocross or other upcoming event. We have had several members attend their first autocross or other event this year, and we'd love to get the opportunity to meet more of you! If you have any questions concerning the upcoming events, or if you have an idea for an additional event, please contact us. Our contact information is below. Sacramento Valley Region did a wonderful job bringing back CRAB to a sell out crowd. It was three days of Porsche fun and an airshow to top it off. Thanks SVR and the CRAB 36 volunteers! There is a small group of Zone 7 people heading to Jay Peak, Vermont for the annual Porsche Parade. That will take up the rest of June for me. During the week, I will attend the board meeting for PCA and bring back info for next years Parade in Spokane, Washington. Start planning now for next summer. Re post: still needed Zone 7 Treasurer! Zone 7 is now incorporated. So, we need to have a treasurer. It will be a very easy job. Mainly we need someone to file the tax returns. Since we have little money, it will be easy! More questions? Call me. Safe driving, Sandy Provasi Zone 7 Rep sandyprovasi@gmail.com P o r sches on the Plaza support CASA June 25th 9am 3pm

I ceman Report: C r a b 3 6, M a y by Craig Steele It's been a while since I have written an article. I need to get back in practice for my cross country tour starting on June 16 th in Lemon CO. I will be going to Parade at Jay Peak, VT then to NYC to follow the original Lincoln highway to SF (3100 miles). Let's get back to my report. I started to attend the SVR planning meeting last year at the invitation of Kim Nelson. He is the co chair and a past President of the region. I was very impressed with the forty volunteers who manage all aspects of the event. There are countless items to manage in organizing an event like this. It had been five years (2008) since the last Crab and that was the 35 th, just in case you didn't know what the 36 stood for. Kim introduced me and said I would bring 20 RR Porsches to the event, actually only 6 RR members signed up. No problem, this event sold out way before the cut off on May 10th.

I invited my friend, Ron Breeze, ex RR member, to attend the event with me. He is an excellent photographer and shared this link: It highlights some of his best Crab 36 photos. We stayed at the Best Western Lodge where about fifty plus Porsches were parked. On Friday the 13 th we headed to the Welcome party at the Eagle's Nest airstrip. It was fun see some old friends as well as a lot of Porsches along with a bunch of people new to me. There was a Goodie store and vendors showing their wares. The sponsorship was outstanding in supporting this event including the local Porsche dealership Niello. They were the biggest sponsor for this event and offered test drives on Saturday and Sunday in a Macan and 911 Turbo. You couldn't do everything; however, Bob and Anita tried. Ron and I drove back to our room and immediately collapsed into a deep sleep.

Saturday was the AX tour to Volcano. A tiny little village of homes, a post office and a few shops can be found here that have been open for over 150 years. The plaques in the middle of town talk about the history of this little settlement, north of Jackson off Highway 88. We were lucky to follow the SVR Tour Chair during our drive. Other groups got really lost. Ron and I enjoyed the whole trip. I would like to re visit Volcano again when there are not so many people milling around. The weather was very cooperative the whole weekend. We continued on the drive taking in the Daffodil Hill and headed back to Crab 36.

The next activity was the PM auto cross, which is my most tired time of the day. There was a mile long out and back route that circled a big square box at it's furthest distances. There were only three runs per car. I was spoiled at our AX last week, I got 13 runs both days. Anyway, I didn't DNF and had only one clean run. It was not my best time. I had two runs; one with a single cone and the other had two cones. I hate those tight 914 turns. It was very hot in the afternoon. I was assigned one of busiest stations that had a ton of cones being hit. I was running a lot to prepare the course for the next car. I was ready for a shower after that and looking forward to getting ready for the crab feed. When we arrived we started to pick out our table and get our drinks. The hanger was our dining area and we shared it with a F2UG Corsair with striking red and white markings. This beauty is for sale for $10M. There were only ten ever produced by the Goodyear Company in 1945 and this is one of two still intact. It is very fast with an estimated 4,000 hp. It was in fine company with all of Porsches parked around the hanger. The crab feed was so much fun. We were surrounded by lots of Redwood Region and AX friends. I was glad I went to the last RR crab feed so I knew how to get keep up with the crab feeder. Howard and LaVergne were especially talented in the art of finding the most crabmeat. The evening had plenty of things to hear from our host including live music. Ron and I ducked out and headed for sleepy land. We were bushed and we had a rally to do Sunday morning. Sunday was our pack up day. We got a good breakfast, paid our bill and gassed up the Porsches. The Rally started for us at exactly 8:09am. Ron was driving and I was navigating. I had no idea what I was doing and in spite of that we still found the first checkpoint. We got lost several times before the next checkpoint. This part of the course is where we got most of our 300 points. We felt good returning to the hanger. We shared our adventures with our newfound friends and old buddies. We enjoyed our beer and brats while waiting for the main event, the air show. We all walked out to the airstrip as pilot Brian Sander treated us to a spectacular demonstration of aerobatics and precision flying complete with wing tip smoke generators. This plane is a stunning example of aircraft art and is pretty fast at 400 knots too. It spun and rolled in the sky with the greatest of ease and smoothness. After the air show, we finished up with awards. Bob and Anita, along with Sharon Castle, got awards for the rallye finish and AX time placement. Ron and I had a lot of fun. He drove back to Monterey and I headed back to Santa Rosa. Crab 36 was a great event. Plan to attend the next one. ICE

by Grady Carter, Autocross Director The May Zone 7 autocross weekend started with a less than hopeful weather forecast and very forbidding skies. A few autocrossers from the east and south, including Zone 7 Representative Sandy Provasi, braved the forecast to join the Redwood regulars along with a pair of Redwood first timers, Ralph and Linda. As the hills around us got soaked throughout the day, Mother Nature was kind and left us dry. We put in 13 runs with Monty Pack coming out on top in his '14 GT3. I'm sure Ed Hunter would have given Monty a tough fight but his race 914 sheared the drive flange bolts at the start of his fourth run. There were some close fought battles amongst the action. In the AX12 class Curtis Robertson (GGR) edging out Jamie DeRuiter (RR) by seconds while in AX8 Larry Sharp (LPR) out gunned Grady Carter by seconds. Ladies' top time of the day was taken by Sandy Provasi (LPR) over Redwooder Stacy O'Connell by seconds. Saturday evening a group of hardy autocrossers met up for the Zone dinner. Good food and great conversation was enjoyed by all. We were even joined by Ed after his 6 hour round trip of taking his broken 914 home and bringing back his 911. Ideal autocross weather on Sunday brought in a few more invaders from other PCA regions. Andrew Blyholder, GGR Autocross Director, and his race 914 showed everyone how it is done with top time of the day. He was chased by Dave Dunwoodie (LPR) in his race 911. The battles in AX12 and AX8 continued but this time it was the Redwooders prevailing. Jamie got Curtis by seconds and Grady squeaked past Larry by seconds. Vern Thomas, Zone 7 Autocross Director and a Redwooder, put her skills to use and came away with top time of day for the ladies. We had another new Redwood member join us. After observing on Saturday Fred just had to come out and join in the fun on Sunday. Judging from the smile on his face all day he just might be back.

For me it is off to the next Zone autocross in Stockton on June 11 (I just hope someone turns on the air conditioning there) and then our next Redwood event on June 18. Happy motoring, Grady Carter 2015 Zone 7 award winners from left to right: Grady Carter, Bob Schoenherr, Tosh Yumae, Ed Hunter

By the time the Autocross second run group was on the grid it was pouring down rain. Our own Brian Burry deserves a DUMKOFF award for keeping his windshield wipers on to watch the Auto X and running his battery down so that his car wouldn't start when it was his turn to auto x!! C a r l sen Porsche GGR Beginner Autocross School July 23rd Announcing the Annual Carlsen Porsche GGR Beginner Autocross School!!!!!!!!! It will happen on Saturday July 23, It is really for beginners or people who have autocrossed only a few times. If you have ever wondered what it is like to experience driving your Porsche on the edge (but safely in control) then this is for you. This is a good safe place for drivers to learn about the handling of their Porsche. The school will be on the large North runway area of the old Alameda NAS (just past the Alameda Ferry Terminal). The day begins at 7:30 AM with registration, teching of cars, and then a driver's meeting at 8:15. Students will then walk the course with their instructors. After that, students will be driving on skidpads in order to learn the feel of an oversteering and an understeering car. It is a lot of fun!! In addition, there will be braking exercises. The day will proceed with students running the Autocross course with their instructors, while half of the students learn to work the course. After the lunch break we continue to run cars in hour sessions until 5 PM. It is truly a fun day with lots of learning. One of the best parts is that students can get a ride in their instructor's car. We try as best we can, to have instructors that have had experience with cars similar to the students. The school is sponsored by Carlsen Porsche. They are a Premier Porsche Dealer located at 3636 Haven Ave, Redwood City, CA Their phone is They can help you get the best Porsche to fit your needs. In addition to new, they have Certified Pre owned vehicles. Their service department is top rated.
