F r o m t h e E d i t o r by Jamie DeRuiter, der Riesenbaum Editor With both of my sons out of school I've been trying to take the time to enjoy the little things with them and create some memories in doing so. With that said, its been hard to focus on and get to all the Porsche events I'd like. My choice is easy. Memories can't be bought they have to be earned. Someday soon both of my sons will be busy with families and jobs of their own so right now I choose to take advantage of this in between time and concentrate on just being with them. Our last autocross was very fun. My car handled well and the course designed by Drew Powers was quite challenging. See my write up below... We have three winery tours coming up on the calendar. Put one on your personal calendar and enjoy some good company while sipping some of the best wine(s) in California. I plan on making at least two of the three. I need more content in the newsletter. I'd like to see a Tech Tips section and perhaps one for tasty recipes. What else would you readers like to see? Do you like to write or know a member who does? Please contact me with any suggestions I would love to have more content for my readers. Shift Toward Adventure, Jamie derriesenbaumeditor@gmail.com P r e sidents Message by Mike Hinton, President I hope that all of you had a fun and safe Independence Day holiday weekend. As I mentioned last month, I attended the 61 st annual Porsche Parade, which was held in Jay Peak, Vermont. Unlike many of the California based participants, I decided to drive cross

2 country in the GT3. Naturally, before starting out on a trip of that magnitude, I tried to make sure that all of the systems on the car were ready to go. It was apparent that the rear tires would not survive the 8,000 miles that I planned to drive, so new ones were in order. I quickly discovered that the rear tire size (295/30 18) is about as common as unicorns. That size was unavailable from Tire Rack (back ordered), but my guys at America's Tire in Napa were able to locate some. It just took 4 days for them to arrive. I also noticed that the air conditioning was not functioning properly, so after getting my new tires installed, I had the system recharged. Unfortunately, that step did not solve the problem, so off to Hi Tec the car went. I should note that I took the car to the shop on the Friday before I was to leave town, which had to happen on June 15 so that I could fulfill my volunteer obligations on the 19 th. Naturally, of course, there were complications. It turned out that I was missing a radiator cooling fan on the driver side, and that the one on the passenger side was dead. I got those replaced, and then got the news that the evaporator for the a/c unit was leaking. No big deal, right? Nope. The repair requires 11 (!) hours of labor, and a very expensive part to fix. So, that meant no a/c for the trip. Not the end of the world. The trip did not start off auspiciously. About 5 miles from home, my coolant temperature gauge went into failure mode, and the "check engine" light went on. "This is going to be an ugly trip," I thought. Shortly thereafter, the temperature gauge came back to life. Things were improving! The trip across California and through Reno was uneventful, and I was making good progress to my goal of Salt Lake City. About 70 miles from Reno, I heard a metallic "ping" on the underside of the car. "Must have run over something." Almost immediately, I felt a vibration at the rear of the car, so I pulled to the shoulder. Much to my chagrin, I had a flat right rear tire! I immediately texted my fellow GT3 owner Chris Harrell down in Los Angeles to relay the bad news. His response was "I'll find you a tire." Let's just say that I was unconvinced. However, about 45 minutes later, Chris called me and told me to call a tire shop in Sparks (just east of Reno). Amazingly, they had one of the unicorns in stock! So, I had the car towed to the shop, and I was back on the road. Shortly after the new tire was installed, I had to refuel both myself and the car. When I restarted the car after refueling, the check engine light stayed off! I wound up losing about 6 hours to the adventure, but did eventually make it to Salt Lake City for the night. The next couple of days were pretty much of a blur, as I drove almost 2,100 miles in two days to reach Rochester, NY. After that, it was on to Parade, and then the epic drive home with Craig Steele on the Lincoln Highway. Those tales will have to wait for later. In the meantime, back here in the Redwood Region, we have a tasty slate of upcoming events, including autocross (yes, I will be attending on Saturday, even though I have been home only for a couple of days), and our annual visit to Field Stone Winery. Vern Rogers will be leading that event, and in my opinion, it's one of the premier events on the calendar. So come on out, and enjoy the drive and the wines! As always, we welcome your input about any of our current or future events. Please contact any of us with questions or concerns. 5 Autocross #5 June 18th, 2016

6 by Grady Carter, Redwood Region Autocross Director The June autocross featured a course layout by one of our regulars AXers, but first time designer, Drew Powers. He definitely brought some fresh ideas on how to utilize our available tarmac. Can you say OPTIONS? First you had to choose between 2 parallel slaloms, left or right. Approaching the back turn you then had to pick which side of a cone wall you wanted to attack the back turn from. Ah, then it gets easy, you just had to choose which way you wanted to go through a 2 cone slalom and a 3 cone slalom. Not so hard until you throw in the offset "pivot" cone between them.

7 It was a fun day of mixing and matching the different options. Which combination flowed better but which combination was actually faster? Once you made all your decisions it needed to be optimized (is that the right word?). Everyone got in 14 runs so we had plenty of opportunity to get this all done. The class competition of the day was in AX 10. Vern Rogers got everything figured on his 12 th run and recorded his best time of the day. Howard Thomas, after leading most of the day, was able to put it all together on his 13 th run to come out ahead by a whopping seconds (that's if you consider the time it takes to snap you finger whopping). Top Time of Day (TTOD) for the ladies was recorded by Vern Thomas by an impressive margin but when the calculations were done for the handicap system (PAX) it was Anita Benzing that came out on top by a mere seconds (a half snap of the fingers?). Congrats to both ladies. The TTOD for the men found a few of the usual suspects laying down some fast times. As everyone started getting the course sorted out, the 2014 GT3's laid down some good times. Tosh Yumae went to the top of the list on his 5 th run only to be eclipsed by Mike Beavers on his 6 th and further improved his time on his 9 th run. Grady Carter, modified '02 Boxster S, had trailed the GT3's most of the day but things came together on his 12 th and 13 th runs to steal TTOD from Mike. Third on the day was the sneaky fast 2011 Boxster Spyder of Doug Brekke. Men's PAX results found Grady Carter in 1 st with that pesky 914 of Bob Schoenherr back about 0.25 seconds and about that margin back to Jamie DeRuiter who seems to be getting faster now that his rear suspension geometry on his ' has been sorted out.

21 C a r l sen Porsche GGR Beginner Autocross School July 23rd Announcing the Annual Carlsen Porsche GGR Beginner Autocross School!!!!!!!!! It will happen on Saturday July 23, It is really for beginners or people who have autocrossed only a few times. If you have ever wondered what it is like to experience driving your Porsche on the edge (but safely in control) then this is for you. This is a good safe place for drivers to learn about the handling of their Porsche. The school will be on the large North runway area of the old Alameda NAS (just past the Alameda Ferry Terminal). The day begins at 7:30 AM with registration, teching of cars, and then a driver's meeting at 8:15. Students will then walk the course with their instructors. After that, students will be driving on skidpads in order to learn the feel of an oversteering and an understeering car. It is a lot of fun!! In addition, there will be braking exercises. The day will proceed with students running the Autocross course with their instructors, while half of the students learn to work the course. After the lunch break we continue to run cars in hour sessions until 5 PM. It is truly a fun day with lots of learning. One of the best parts is that students can get a ride in their instructor's car. We try as best we can, to have instructors that have had experience with cars similar to the students. The school is sponsored by Carlsen Porsche. They are a Premier Porsche Dealer located at 3636 Haven Ave, Redwood City, CA Their phone is They can help you get the best Porsche to fit your needs. In addition to new, they have Certified Pre owned vehicles. Their service department is top rated.
