3 NCKCC News - September 2005 Page 3 HOT AUGUST NILES By Vern Hance Fremont - August 20 dawned with a pervasive marine fog layer all the way to the inland valleys of the Bay Area, but it wasn t really cold and the lighting for car pictures is what photographers dream about. NCKCC had six cars in place before 8:15 a.m. and the sun was shining brightly on them by about 11 a.m. The show was filled but not as fast as previous years, before the Niles Merchants added an early spring show as they did in There were probably cars on display covering the full spectrum from low-riders to the tallest pickups. In between were lots of beautiful Fords and Chevys from the 1930s to the 1970s and a few beyond that bracket. Outside of our beloved kit cars some of my favorites included a 1948 Hudson convertible, a very Corvette powered 39 Ford coupe (picture on page 11) and a 31 Cadillac. Speedsters), Jim Standiford (Jackrabbit), Dave Jones (Cobra), Bill Navratil (Gatsby) and Vern Hance (M-B 500K). James & Wendy Wagner stopped by for a visit and reported that their new Fiero based ZR-2 is in the paint shop and should be ready by San Leandro show time. Claude Calderon drove from Clovis to Manteca where he hitched a ride to the show with Joe Macias in his Plymouth Prowler. (Joe, a former member, sold his Cobra when he moved from Union City to Manteca a few years ago. See page 11) A couple views of our club cars are shown here. Our member cars included Dale Fieber and friend Troy Mongomery (both with Porsche
4 Page 4 NCKCC News - September 2005 ANOTHER AUGUST 20 th SHOW By Vern Hance Concord - Following the Hot August Niles Show I headed for Concord where I received an invitation to display some of our Kit Cars at a show sponsored by Crossroads Covenant Church. I had relayed by the invitation to our members in the vicinity of Concord. Jerry Barrilleaux (1952 MG-TD) and Alex Penalosa (1929 Mercedes Gazelle) accepted and we all arrived at 4:30 p.m. for the 4-hour show. The show was free and to make things even better they provided a delicious complimentary picnic menu including grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, baked beans and ice tea or lemonade. The parking lot was packed to overflowing with everything from motorcycles and street rods to 80-year old Model T Fords and vintage Corvettes. Above L to R: Jerry Barrilleaux and Alex Penalosa cruise the show site. Below: Views of the show looking east and west respectively. The temperature was warmer than Niles but if you stood close to the two kids water slides you could gather some cooling spray. It was a nicely done car show that I understand was put together on a short time frame. I might have to ask for some of their promotion ideas that we can apply to our show efforts. Here are some of the pictures I took.
5 NCKCC News - September 2005 Page 5 FROM THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT. By Dave Jones I wish to apologize for my lack of attendance at events I am normally at such as, The Walnut Creek Art and Wine display, Bethel Island, and a couple of others that I had intended to make this year. But some life changing events took place at the exact same time as these displays and shows were going on. To mention but a few; Leanne and I were the bartender and wine steward at a friends wedding on one weekend. My daughter Sarah and our two grandsons moved into their own place on another weekend. I finally had a major breakdown in the cobra,(i blew Third Gear out in the transmission resulting in complete transmission replacement). On a sadder note, I lost my friend of 14 years, my beloved Labrador, Tanner. One thing that I have not stopped doing though, is to explore new events and ideas that can help or benefit our club. I attended a local event put on by a club known as the BAY BOMBS. Their style of car are the mild low rider cars and pick ups of the late 30s thru early 60s. The show included these classes: Hot Rod,Pickup, Convertible, Custom, Motorcycle, Best bomb, and so on. About fourteen classes altogether. Their show also supported a local cause, a scholarship fund for local kids to go to automotive colleges. It had local police support, and a good family atmosphere. It was held in one of the Community Center Parks. I would like to make this July 30th event one that our club could make a good showing at. The entry was only $ Other clubs attended as clubs and I feel strongly that we could do some good promotional work for our club and our show earlier in the year. Please consider this a personal invitation to join me next year at this event. The other news worthy event began with the reading of an article in KIT CAR magazine, September 2005 issue in the column called, In the Lupe. On page 9 of the article, in the right hand column it talks about a group of Thirty or so Lotus 7 replica owners who are shipping their cars over from England arriving at the Port of Houston, Texas to start a 3-week tour of the southwestern United States. Their final destination, San Francisco. I have been in contact with their local Representative, Rich Hairston, who lives in Napa, CA. He says they are due to arrive in San Francisco on the evening of October 3, On October 4 they have some track time at Infinion Raceway. On Oct 5 they have an open day before they have to take their cars to the port of Oakland for loading for return to England.
6 NCKCC News - September 2005 Page 6 They have requested information on wineries and tours. Leanne and I are working to put together a wine tour for them on Oct.5,2005. That would be a Wednesday. They are very interested in meeting their fellow auto enthusiasts. So if you are interested in attending this special event please contact me at my address vnimus1@yahoo.com or phone me at I have told them that we, The Northern California Kit Car Club, are the largest replicar association in Northern California, so I hope we will be well represented at this event. Just so you know, if I have to, I am planning to call in dead that day so that I can attend. The KIT CAR article states that the approximately 40 owners that are shipping their cars to Houston, include mostly Caterhams, but other types such as Birkins, DeDions, Sylvas, Robin Hoods, etc. are included. The owners hail from the Wales, Isle of Jersey, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Finland, Switzerland, Dubai and Luxembourg. Their 22 day travel plans include Texas, SanteFe,NM, Vail, CO, Moab, UT, Page, AZ, Las Vegas, NV and finally San Francisco. The details of this event are still taking shape, but we hope to have more details for both of these events available at the Sept. show. Looking forward to seeing you all there! Editor s note: If things are not finalized by San Leandro showtime, I suggest you check our website HOTLINE at < frequently. I will update the website with more information as it becomes available. If you don t have internet access, then call Dave or Leanne at the number above as we get closer to the October 5th date. Here s a view of a Caterham Super Seven from an old kit car catalog.
