Page 2 NCKCC News - March 2006 COMING OUT PARTY APRIL 8th AT THE CANDY STORE By Vern Hance We tried to get a March event organized but couldn t quite make it, so we decided to make our April Coming Out party for new members and newly completed cars a little earlier and selected The Candy Store in Burlingame as the venue. First a little history about The Candy Store: The Candy Store started with two automobile enthusiasts in 1979 with Bob Cole and the late Russell Head. Their vision was to have a safe environment to store their collection, and yet have a clubhouse to share the visual feast and camaraderie with other enthusiasts. In 1983, The Candy Store organized into a not-for-profit club, and members and their cars were relocated to 1021 Burlingame Avenue. The elegant Spanish style building was designed in 1928 as a Packard Dealership for Earl C. Anthony. It s now the perfect setting for The Candy Store whose motto is... Great Cars, Great People. With a motto like that, the Candy Store seems a perfect setting for our NCKCC event. We have two options for you at this event. For those who want to gather for brunch, we will meet at the Italian restaurant and bakery, IL Fornaio, 327 Lorton, Burlingame at 11:45 and regroup later, with those who have other lunch plans, for our 1:30 p.m. meeting at The Candy Store, 1021Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame. The brunch menu for IL Fornaio is shown on page 9 for your study, or you can go to < The visit to The Candy Store costs $5 per person. We especially want to honor those members who have joined us during the past year and particularly anyone who has finished or acquired a new vehicle in the past year. I can figure out who the new members are (and I know of some new cars) but you will have to help me find all the cars that qualify for recognition. That s one assignment.

NCKCC News - March 2006 Page 3 Another area that I need your cooperation is to let me know if you want to join us for brunch at IL Fornaio. I already have a few people signed up, but I need an exact count so I can get the restaurant to set up for the proper number. The deadline is March 25 for you to let me know. After that date I can t promise you a place at the table. The Candy Store amenities include three restrooms, including handicap access, library projection screen, sound system, a podium and ample free parking. So we plan to show a video of our 2005 San Leandro show for your entertainment. And we should have time to hear your comments and suggestions for our handling of other club activities. In addition a representative from the Candy Store will be present to answer any questions we may have about the automobiles and the facility. To get there check the map below or create your own set of instructions from Google, Yahoo, Mapquest or whatever. Burlingame is north of the San Mateo Bridge, south of S.F. Airport and west of Highway 101. The map should do the rest to get you to 327 Lorton Avenue for brunch and 1021 Burlingame avenue for The Candy Store meeting.

Page 4 NCKCC News - March 2006 WORDS FROM THE PREZ This month s column concerns the lack of information about Marque Madness. Apologies are in order to you, the membership, who have expressed interest in this event. There has been no new posting on the MM website. One of the reasons was that our main contact for MM was out of the country on business-pleasure and just returned the night before this newsletter had to go to press. The second reason was that the people that he had left to make the updates had not as yet done so. The following information is on the web page, but for those of you who haven t checked it lately we will print it here. The dates have changed a little bit. The beginning date is the same March 4, 2006 but the ending date has been changed to March 7, Apparently Laguna Seca has some track maintenance issues to take care of before their next big event, the GP Motorcycle race, that comes quickly on the heels of the Proto GT event that runs concurrently with MM. be made available on this subject on our club website HOTLINE and on MM web page. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience the lack of information has caused. Be assured that I am following through. Next topic is our Coming Out Party. Arrangements are just about complete for this one. April 8th, 2006 we will meet for a brunch at a restaurant that that has been selected near the Candy Factory Car Club in Burlingame (See page 2). After the brunch we will tour their facilities at 1:30. There is ample parking for our cars so please feel free to Bring-um if ya gotum. This event is to recognize new members and those with recently completed cars. So if you fall in to either category, please come join us for this event. That s all I have for this month. So until next time; Check the oil and the water, and make sure the battery is charged before you bring-um out this year!! The date change effects the track time that is going to be available. So instead of a full day for the more daring of our membership, track time will still be available in between the Proto GT practice sessions. More information will

Page 6 NCKCC News - March 2006 A PLEA FOR YOUR PHOTOS By Steve Cameron For several years I wanted to have a spot in our newsletter and on the website for photos and stories of club cars. For one reason or another I put the project on hold. Well, after visiting another car club s website, I started feeling guilty that I never got this idea off the ground. So, in January I said it was time to quit procrastinating. This idea was going to come alive. I ed a few club members and told them what I planned to do. I said that I would volunteer for the write-up if someone would send me a photo of their car and some basic information. I didn t receive any car information in January, but that was OK. I sent out another in February to a few more members. A couple of people wrote back and liked the idea, but they all needed a little time. Now, here it is the end of February and I need something for the newsletter. Since I don t have any other material for the article this month, I am forced to use my car as the maiden Car of the Month. I really wanted other club members cars, but if I don t do this now, it will end up on the back burner again. me some information about your car. If you have more than one car, send me the details of each of them. I ll do a write-up on your car and include a photo for the newsletter. That same photo will go into our website. If you haven t been to the Members Photos part of the website it is: < nckcc.com/membercars.html> This is the information I need to get started: 1) a nice digital photo of the car (preferably in.jpeg format if you are going to it to me, otherwise mail me a floppy disk with the photo) 2) the technical specs (manufacturer of the body, description of the engine/ trans, etc.) 3) when the car was built, and any story of interest that might go along with it 4) plans, if any, for the future of your car 5) your name, address and contact phone number in case I have any questions. This should be sent to Steve Cameron, nckcc@usa.com. You can call me at (916) , or send snail mail to: 2 Wood River Ct., Sacramento, CA If you send , please note in the subject line that this is for the article. My spam filter trashes s with no subject and those that just say Hello. Here is my plea to you. Please send

NCKCC News - March 2006 Page 7 CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH Our February Car of the Month is a cherry red Tomahawk roadster owned by Steve and Pam Cameron. The Tomahawk is a fiberglass overlay on a Datsun 280Z. It is a creation of Rory Bateman, and less than 30 have been made to date. Most were made for the Z model. Two were made for the 280ZX and two for the 300ZX. Although some people say the Tomahawk looks like a Cobra, it is quite different. When standing next to each other, the Tomahawk is much taller and wider than a Cobra. The McPherson strut suspension requires tall wheel wells, and the integrated windshield blends smoothly from the hood. The Tomahawk has full-sized doors, roll-up windows, a modern dash and a four-piece hardtop. Those of you with sharp memories will recall that this roadster first came to us at our 1999 show in Berkeley. At that time the Tomahawk was all black and powered by the always reliable 150hp Datsun in-line six. In the last seven years this car has been steadily transformed. It now sports a 300hp Chevrolet LT1 with a T-56 transmission. The added torque necessitated junking the old interior in favor of welding in 100lbs of steel reinforcement. Adjustable coil-over shocks were added to improve handling. The black paint took a beating in the engine transformation and was replaced with the cherry. A lot of items remain to be finished. The interior is a work in progress and both a fuel cell and a hidden trailer hitch are in the planning stage. Keep your eyes open for the Tomahawk.

Page 8 NCKCC News - March 2006 DUES PAYMENTS Another reminder that 2006 dues are due on January 1st. The dues remain at $24 per year and checks, payable to NCKCC, should be mailed to the treasurer at 3317 Ellesmere Court, Walnut Creek, CA Newsletter mailimgs will cease for those not current on their dues by April 15, 2006 Here are the names of 29 more people that have paid their 2006 dues. Last month I listed 35 names who are paid up. If your name is not listed here or in the February newsletter, get out your checkbook and send you dues payment to continue your membership. EDITOR S ADVENTURES I thought I would take my suggestion in the February newsletter and go to the Horseless Carriage Club Swap Meet at Hayward on February 26th. Not such a good idea!! I got there only 1-1/2 hours befor the 2 p.m. close and found many were packed up and gone and the remaining folks were packing furiously before the heavy rain arrived. The weather was a threat but was only a few sprinkles up to the time I arrived. Might have been more good looking old cars earlier but I did get a shot of this 1907 Buick on its trailer ready to go. The lower car is a 1926 Overland.
