(Stay tuned)
2 Page 2 NCKCC News - October 2004 NCKCC ANNUAL WINE OUTING - OCTOBER 16 It is becoming more difficult to come up with wineries that are new, small, different, and most of all ones that have GREAT WINES! Despite this daunting task, I believe I have found a hidden treasure outside of Calistoga. off Highway 29. We will be visiting three small boutique type wineries. The first is Benessere. Benessere is located at the end of Big Tree Road. Benessere is Italian for wellbeing or Prosperity. At Benessere, they take it to mean the prosperity and wellbeing of living in the Napa Valley. This was the concept by which Benessere was founded in The winery was conceived with the idea of making the Italian varietal grape Sangiovese into a wine which could rival any red wine in the world. Sangiovese has been used to make the finest wines in Tuscany, Italy for centuries. Now, we have adapted it to California and specifically the Napa Valley. Benessere has a quest for excellence and adherence to the highest standards of inovative and traditional methods for fine winemaking....tradition and Heritage is what Benessere Aspires to Provide, while Producing Small Production Lots of the Highest Quality Wine Possible. The second winery is Frank Family Vineyards at Lark Mead Lane, just off highway 29. This is where we will be enjoying our picnic lunches after some tasting. (Don t forget to pack your lunch) We will try their sparkling wines first and then go to the back room. There we will see a collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia. We will also taste the best Chardonnay. (among many that I have experienced) Housed in the historic Larkmead winery in Napa Valley, Frank Family Vineyards produces wines that live up to the heritage of the lands on which they are produced. Wines are handcrafted in small quantities and are only sold at the winery, and a handful of select restaurants and wine shops. You are invited to peruse the sparkling and still wines and the personal recipe suggestions to accompany each varietal. Our third and final stop is the Von Strasser Winery, located way up on Diamond Mountain road. Von Strasser wines are known for their exceptional concentration and character. A distinguished Diamond Mountain district since 1990, the winery is nestled in the hills of calistoga. Von Strasser produces wines full of mountain Cabernet intensity with the finesse of the finest Bordeaux. One of the nice things about Von Strasser is they have wines for all pocket-book sizes. I actually prefer their second label wines to their Von Strasser label. Come see which you prefer. Please call Leanne Jones ( or cell) to let me know if you will be able to join us. Take I-80 to Vallejo. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Vallejo-Napa Valley Holiday Inn off the Marine World Parkway. (See Map on Cover)
3 NCKCC News - October 2004 Page 3 22nd ANNUAL HANDCRAFTED AUTOMOBILE CONCOURSE By Vern Hance This year s show had a delightfully different mix of cars and we enjoyed great weather and had plenty of door prizes. We had 65 cars registered this year but the Cobras were matched by Porsche Speedsters with 12 in each category. Our gate receipts were off dramatically this year totaling 318 admissions for both days. The spectators didn t seem to be that scarce, so I suspect that a lot of people were coming into the show from other points than the gate. Manufacturers included John Steete of JPS Motor Sports, who helped spearhead the great turnout of Porsche Speedsters. Member Dale Fieber also did an outstanding job of promoting our show among the Speedster Owners Group. West Coast Performance took the Manufacturer Award with their awesome display of Daren Friedman s tricked out silver Cobra. Jim Riddell of Cutting Edge had a nice Cobra display and seemed to have a crowd of interested people most of the time. Colin & Irene Faithful of C & F Enterprise had their beautiful green Cal Ace, (Cobra look-alike) based on an MG chassis, on display. Perry Design showed their Porsche 550 Spyder kit that uses a stock VW pan and drive train setup. Richard Vecchio represented Mid-Atlantic Euro Sports who offered a Porsche GT1 replica based on a Porsche 911. Unfortunately their computer presentation malfunctioned, but they found many folks interested in their kit and accessories brochure. We had a good showing of Special Interest vehicles including Doug Cabral s chopped 34 Ford coupe, 49er Motorsports 23 Ford T-bucket dragster and two returning oneoff creations that took home some trophies. Bill Nalbandian, showed his electric powered Bradley. Ferrari, Bugatti, MG-TD and Jaguar replicas were well represented. Brinton Jones brought his Corvette powered Manta Mirage and we discovered he is a veritable knowledge-base on fiberglass work. We were pleased to have Al Bohr s Fino, with it s exquisite multi-hued paint job and Cadillac Northstar powertrain representing the OHAA, but Alan Phillips Finale from Idaho just edged him out of a trophy. Our Saturday Snack & Beverage Time late Saturday afternoon provided a time for all to gather and enjoy a social hour prior to our dinner at the El Torito Restaurant. The dinner was attended by 70 people and we had enough raffle prizes for everyone to be a winner. We want to thank Leanne Jones and Carolina Williams, Show Co-Chairpersons, for all the work that went into making this show a success and express our appreciation for the many members who worked at their various assignments to make it all happen. And, of course, above all a huge thanks to those who brought their cars. On the following pages we will show as many trophy winning cars as we can. You can see them all in color on our website at:

Bob Hagin lived in Pleasant Hill and taught Auto Shop at College Park High School for 23 years. He was of great assistance to our club in its early years according to club founders Paul and Ruth King. He judged some of our earliest shows and was a booster of the Kit Car Hobby through his newspaper articles and peodically commented on our clubs activities, of which he was kept informed by being on our newsletter mailing list.
