10 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : MAYURBHANJ 1. Location : Mayurbhanj district is one of the Centrally located districts in Odisha. It lies between 85 o 40 to 87 o 11 East longitude and between 21 o 16 to 22 o 34 North latitude. It is bounded by the Jharkhand state in north, Balasore district in south, West Bengal State in the east and Keonjhar district in the west. 2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to May and cold during November to December. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June, Annual rainfall of the district was m.m in 2014, which is lower than the normal rainfall ( m.m). 3. Area and Population : The district has an area of sq.kms and lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 6.69 percent of the states territory and shares 6.00 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 242 per sq. kms. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 3950 villages (including 199 un-inhabited villages) covering 26 blocks, 26 Tahasils and 4 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is (7.30%) and schedule tribe population (58.70%). The literacy percentage o the district covers against of the state. 4. Agriculture : During the year , the net area sown was 318 thousand hectares against 4474 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was quintals, 1375 quintals wheat, quintals maize, 4027 quintals mung, 2083 quintals biri, 1360 quintals kulthi, and 1272 quintals till, quintals groundnuts, 807 quintals mustard, and 8762 quintals sugarcane. During , the total fertilizers used in Mayurbhanj district is 1

11 about MT with a breakage of MT nitrogenous, 6109 MT phosphatic and 2313 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 41 Kg. 5. Irrigation : During the year , it is reported by Deputy Director Agriculture that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are hectares and hectares respectively through all sources including major/medium irrigation projects namely Baladiha, Bankabal, Deokunda, Deo (P), Kala, Katra, Khadakhai, Nesa, Subarnarekhal (P), Sunei (P) and Sunei Extn. Irrigation projects in the district. 6. Education: There were 2905 nos. of primary schools, 1468 nos. of Upprimary schools, 614 nos. of Secondary Schools and 121 nos. of general colleges in the district during Besides, there are 4 nos. of engineering schools and 5 nos. of engineering colleges in the district during year to impart technical education. 7. Health: - The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 118 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 852 beds facilities 44 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 44 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year Veterinary Services : During the year , 42 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 166 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Mayurbhanj district of provide veterinary services to the people. 9. Industry and Mining : During the year , 1375 nos. of micro small and Medium Enterprises have established with total capital investment of about 2

12 Rs lakhs with 3963 nos. of Employment generated in Mayurbhanj district. 10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Mayurbhanj district during the year covers million units and villages so far electrified as on is 3601 which constitutes % to the total villages of the district. 11. Tourist : There are 16 nos. of tourist center such as Similipal, Khiching, Haripur, Jashipur, Kuliana, Baripada, Kuchai, Deokund, Bangiriposhi, Jamsola, Bhimkunda, Bisoi, Manatri, Rairangapur, Samibrukhya and Suleiput identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2015, the numbers of Domestic tourists were and foreign tourists were 64 who visited the tourists spots of the district. 12. Transport & Communication : During , 265 Kms. of National Highways, 235 Kms. of state highways, 140 Kms. Major district roads, 448 kms of other district roads 1660 Kms of PS roads, 7970 Kms. of Gram Panchayat roads and 959 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, kms. of Railway lines with 18 nos. of railway stations and passenger halts are continuing in the district. 13. Banking : As on December 2015, there were 247 nos. of all banks having crores rupees deposit and crores rupees credit in the district. 3
