1 Annual Hydrologic Data Report Volume III: Weather Statistics Water Year 2011 Estrella Fan
2 PREFACE This publication presents meteorological data collected by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC) automated ALERT system. Thirty-four telemetered weather stations are included in this report. Thirty-one of the stations are located within Maricopa County, two in Yavapai County, and one in Pinal County. The weather data contained in this report were collected, compiled, and edited by the Flood Warning Branch of the Engineering Division. The information contained herein is as accurate and complete as possible within the limitations of real-time data collection technology currently available. Wherever possible, footnotes indicating periods of questionable and/or missing data have been added to the appropriate weather summaries. Although every possible means has been taken to provide accurate data, the liability for using this data falls upon the user and not the FCDMC. This report is Volume 3 of a 3 volume suite entitled Annual Hydrologic Data Report Water Year Volumes 1 & 2 in order are [1] Precipitation Report; and [2] Surface Water and Streamflow Report. Additional copies of this report, and copies of the companion volumes, may be purchased from: Flood Control District of Maricopa County 2801 W. 5 INTRODUCTION This publication is part of a three-volume report containing hydrologic and meteorological data collected by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County during Water Year This report is Volume III and contains weather station statistics. On-line users of this document have additional resources available by selecting hyperlinks. Weather Station names will link to the FCDMC web page for that weather station. Other hyperlinks will link within the document. All weather stations report temperature and relative humidity; many also report a combination of wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure and solar radiation. In addition dewpoint temperature is calculated at all weather stations using the temperature and relative humidty data. The temperature, relative humidity, and wind sensors record data every 15 minutes; the barometric pressure and solar radiation sensors every 30 minutes. Fifteen minute dewpoint temperatures are calculated by the ALERT computer using temperature and relative humidity data. The following paragraphs describe the arrangement, collection, and compilation of the monthly weather station data contained in this report: Weather station data presented in the monthly weather summaries is based on the 2011 Water Year which began on Oct. 1 st 2010 and ended Sept. 30 th, Each monthly summary represents one weather station and lists daily weather station statistics by sensor. The monthly summaries are arranged chronologically by station name. An index of ALERT System weather stations, code names, locations, and installation dates is located on page ix. This is followed by a sensor id number matrix listing the available sensors at each weather station. Both indexes are sorted by station name in alphabetical order. Station names are hyper linked to additional weather station information and climate summaries (where available). The monthly weather summaries contain daily maximum, minimum, and mean values for temperature and dewpoint. The monthly summaries also contain daily maximum and minimum values for relative humidity and barometric pressure. Finally, the monthly summaries contain daily maximum peak wind and solar radiation values. All of the ALERT System weather stations record precipitation; however that data is located in the FCDMC Hydrologic Data Report Volume I. The unit of measurement for daily maximum, minimum, and mean temperature data is in degrees farenheight ( F). The daily maximum, minimum, and mean dewpoint data is in degrees farenheight ( F). The daily maximum and minimum relative humidty data is in percent (rh%). The daily maximum peak wind data is in miles per hour (mph). The daily maximum and minimum barometric pressure is in millibars (mb). The daily maximum solar radiation data is in watts per meter squared (w/m 2 ). All data presented in the weather summaries is rounded to the nearest whole value. Additional and/or more detailed sensor data in hard copy or electronic copy is available for the weather station sensors listed in this report. Contact the FCDMC, Engineering Division, Flood Warning Branch at (602) Data can also be downloaded from our web site at Comments or discovered errors in regards to this report should be sent to the Flood Warning Branch via which can be found on the FCDMC ALERT System home page or sent directly to Daniel Henz at danielhenz@mail.maricopa.gov. v

11 Summary of Significant Weather Events The 2011 Water Year produced the hottest month of August on record across the Phoenix area in regards to mean temperature. A short summary of the temperature statistics are provided below. Four weather stations were chosen to take part in this summary. These stations were chosen as they are close in terms of elevation (~1150 ft), they cover the downtown area as well as the greater metropolitan Phoenix area, and they all have similar periods of record with climate summaries going back to the late 90 s. The stations that were used are listed in Table 1 below. Table 1: August 2011 ALERT Weather Station Temperature Statistics Weather Station Sensor ID Avg. High Temp (F) Avg Low Temp (F) Mean Daily Temp (F) Durango Complex th St Buckey FRS # Crossroads Park The average daily high temperature for the month of August 2011 was at or above 108 F at each of the four stations, with the Durango Complex station the hottest at 112 F. Record monthly high temperatures for August were tied on August 23 rd, 24 th, and 26 th at both the Durango Complex station reaching 117 F and the 64 th St reaching 115 F (not shown above). The average daily low temperature for the month of August 2011 at the Durango Complex station was very warm at 90 F, while the other three stations ranged from 83 F to 85 F respectively. Perhaps the most significant statistic for the month of August 2011 was the mean temperature. Each of the four weather stations set records for warmest mean August temperature on record. Figure 2 on the next page, shows the mean monthly temperature for August dating back to 1996 at each of the four weather stations (Sensor 4617 installed 01/16/98 and Sensor 5282 installed 03/01/97, no data at those stations before those dates). The Durango Complex station s mean August temperature of 101 F crushed the old record of 96 F set in 2009 and Similarly, the Crossroads Park station s mean August temperature of 96 F topped the previous record of 93 F set in 2009 and The th St station mean s August temperature topped the old record of 94 F set in 2009 and 2010 by 2 F. Finally, the Buckeye FRS #1 station s mean August temperature of 97 F also topped the old record set in 1998 by 2 F. xi
