2 Climatological Summary: LOCAL CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR AURORA ILLINOIS Aurora (Kane County) has a temperate continental climate, dominated by maritime tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico from about March through November. Gulf air generally supports relative humidities of about 60% during the day and 85% at night. This is the air mass which yields a "muggy" environment, particularly during June through August. During these months, there are occasional, brief interruptions of drier, cooler air from the Pacific Ocean, but they typically only last for a few days. From November through March, the Aurora area is dominated by Pacific Ocean air. However, four to six times each winter, cold, dry air from the Canadian Arctic breaks south, bringing temperatures into negative values. The highest temperature on record is 111ºF recorded 14 July 1936, whereas the lowest is -26 F occurring on 20 January Winter winds are generally out of the west or northwest. The greatest precipitation amount ever recorded in Aurora in 24 hours was inches on 10 October The greatest monthly total ever was inches, also occurring in October Summer day temperatures in north-central Illinois are usually in the 80s, occasionally in the 90s, with nighttime lows about 18 F lower. Humidities are relatively high, and comfort is often impaired. Average annual precipitation is inches. Each summer month generally supports some 4 inches of rainfall, mostly in showers and thunderstorms are sometimes accompanied by hail. Past tornadoes were infrequent. Summer winds are usually out of the southwest. Winters in northern Illinois can be severe, representing a distinct cold season with frequent frost, and snowfall. Arctic air from Canada frequently dominates northern Illinois in winter. Even tropical air from the Gulf is cooled somewhat on its northward tack. Average January highs are near 30 with lows near 10. Ground frost is common from January through March. Average annual snowfall is about 30 inches but there is a great deal of variability. Snowfalls of 6 inches or more at Aurora are expected about once every other year on average, although three such storms occurred during January The greatest snowfall ever during one month in Aurora was 36.4 inches in December Snowcover often continues in Aurora for a few weeks at a time. The longest snowcover of at least two inches in Aurora was 111 days during the winter.
