18 Electrical Equipment for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Explosion risks In the chemicals, oil and agrofood industries many dangerous substances in the forms of gas, smoke, liquid, powder or dust are used or released during the manufacture, processing or storage of such products as: gases, hydrocarbons, plastics, varnishes, paints, drugs, powders, cereals, cosmetics, glues, etc What conditions produce explosions? When fl ammable substances are mixed with oxygen in the ambient air in certain proportions, only an ignition source is required to produce an explosion. This ignition source can be: a naked fl ame, a mechanical or electrical spark, static electricity, or simply a hot surface. To prevent explosions when electrical energy is used, it is essential to use ATEX electrical equipment which has been specially designed for this kind of hazardous environment. An explosion can occur when three elements are present : Oxygen in the air Flammable substances (gases, vapours, dusts etc.) Explosion Ignition source DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES There are two main families: fl ammable gases, vapours and liquids on the one hand, dust in layers or clouds on the other hand. 19 Regulatory Guide Hazardous zones Application of the ATEX Directive 99/92/EC requires users to assess the explosion risks of their plants and to produce a classifi cation of the hazardous zones. There are three Zone types according to the likelihood of a potentially explosive atmosphere being present, and two separate applications according to the nature of the mixture (gases or dusts). CONTINUOUS PRESENCE INTERMITTENT PRESENCE (NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS) OCCASIONAL PRESENCE (ABNORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS) Zone 0 (gases) Zone 1 (gases) Zone 2 (gases) Zone 20 (dusts) Zone 21 (dusts) Zone 22 (dusts) These areas must take into account any external parameters (ventilation, openings, heating etc.) that can modify the scope of the zones. The illustration below gives an example of classifi cation into hazardous zones of an unloading station for a fl ammable liquid. The principle is the same for dust, only the name changes and becomes Zone 20, 21, 22. Beyond Zones 2 or 22, an explosive mixture is no longer likely to occur; this is outside the classifi ed zone and standard industrial equipment can be used. Zone 2 Zone 0 Zone 1 Zone 0 Remarks : Equipment certifi ed for Zone 0 can also be used in Zones 1 and 2. Equipment certifi ed for Zone 22 cannot be used in Zones 20 and 21. Zone 0 (inside tank) and Zone 20 (inside silo) are zones where there is no fi xed electrical equipment (apart from measurement sensors). Equipment certifi ed for Zone 21 cannot be used in Zone 1. GAS certifi ed ATEX equipment (especially e increased safety equipment) is protected by means of its enclosure and by each internal component. However, DUST certifi ed ATEX equipment is only protected by means of its external enclosure. Nevertheless a lot of equipment has double GAS and DUST certifi cation which can be used in both of these two zone types. CAPRI 19

20 Electrical Equipment for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Protection methods Several protection methods are recognized by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization). Each protection method is symbolized by a letter given on the equipment s ATEX label. Since 1 July 2006, standards in the series EN50014 to EN50028 have been replaced by those of series EN60079 and EN61241 listed in the table below. Several protection methods can be used on the same equipment. In this case the relevant symbols appear one after the other (e.g. Ex de ib IICT4). The most common protection methods for ATEX lighting and ATEX low voltage equipment are fl ameproof enclosure d and increased safety e. Standards defi ne the gap i and point length (L) values according to the gas group. Flameproof enclosures are generally made of cast aluminium or alloy (minimum IP54) and require regular rigorous maintenance (greasing of the seals and tightening torques). Increased safety «e» Each component is designed not to create sparks or excessive heating; therefore: air gaps are larger terminals are specifi c (auto-loosening impossible) the enclosure is at least IP54, made of antistatic and shock resistant (7Nm) material. Increased safety enclosures are generally made of polyamide or reinforced polyester. Conductor connection must be rigorous (stripping and tightening) and instructions on use voltages and currents must be complied with. The temperature class takes into account the hottest point of the equipment (see page 23). 20 CAPRI

21 Regulatory Guide ATEX directive Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 100A) From 1 July 2003, electrical equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres within the European Union must comply with this Directive and bear the standard ATEX marking. The Directive defi nes essential safety requirements for manufacturers and requires classifi cation of equipment into groups and categories, while identifying gas and dusts aspects. Compliance with Figure 1 is not necessary if the cable gland complies with IEC and has been tested with a sample os specifi c cable to repeated ignitions ot the fl ammable gas inside an enclose and shows no ignition outside the enclosure. An enclosure containing terminals only or an indirect entry enclosure (see ) is considered not to constitute an internal an internal source of ignition. * The term volume is defi ned in IEC Gas and vapour classification Group II (surface industries) has three subdivisions IIA, IIB and IIC defi ned according to the maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) for Exd enclosures or according to the minimum ignition energy (MIE) for intrinsic safety equipment. Most COOPER products presented in this catalogue are designed for group IIC (the most dangerous) and therefore can be used practically anywhere. However note that for certain fl ameproof products (spotlights, boxes) we generally propose two separate solutions for groups IIB and IIC. It is better only to use ExdIIC solutions in the presence of hydrogen, acetylene, carbon bisulfi de or ethyl nitrate, because of the high cost of this equipment. ExdIIB solutions are suffi cient for all other gas or vapour types. Equipment using only the Exe increased safety protection method does not have the A, B or C subdivision because it can be used whatever gas is present. TEMPERATURE CLASSES Each gas has a specifi c auto-ignition temperature. When this temperature is reached, the gas fl ames spontaneously, with no spark or electrical arc. This auto-ignition temperature must therefore be considered as a limit not to be reached, whether or not in normal operation. The standards defi ne six temperature classes (T1 to T6) corresponding to six maximum surface temperatures (450 C to 85 C). Temperature class T6 is the most severe. C 700 e.g. on a fl ameproof lamp, a T6 temperature class marking means that the lamp s surface temperature will always be less than or equal to 85 C. Each gas has a specifi c autoignition temperature. If you want to install a lamp near a kerosine loading station, the lamp must be classed at least T3 so as not to cause an explosion (a lamp classed T4, T5 or T6 would also suit). 22 CAPRI

23 Regulatory Guide Dusts classification Each type of dust was subject to detailed studies to obtain their fl ammability characteristics (INRS brochures/silos guide etc.). Dusts are singular because their auto-ignition temperatures differ according to whether the dust is in a cloud or a layer. Since many other parameters can modify these auto-ignition values (particle size, humidity, ambient temperature etc.), a calculation including a safety factor must be performed in each case. In the case of dust in a cloud, the maximum surface temperature of the equipment must not exceed two thirds of the ignition temperature, in degrees Celsius, of the air/dust mixture (T1). In the case of dust in layers less than 5 mm, a safety factor of 75 C must be deducted from the layer auto-ignition temperature, in degrees Celsius, of the relevant dust (T2). The choice of equipment must be done by taking the worst result. 24 Electrical Equipment for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Indexes of protection The index of protection IP uses two digits to defi ne the degree of protection secured by the equipment s outer enclosure. The fi rst digit corresponds to protection against solid objects. The second digit corresponds to protection against water or liquid. Electrical equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres generally provides indexes of protection much higher than standard industrial equipment. Most of our products are classed IP65/IP66, or even IP67 and can thus be used in very severe environments. 93 Insulated Adaptors Insulated adaptors provide a method of insulating a cable gland or connection device from the equipment into which it has been feed. This is achieved by inserting a glass fi lled nylon dielectric between the metallic male thread entering the equipment and the metallic female thread receiving the cable gland or connection device. APPLICATION Ingress Protection : IP54, CSA Enclosure Type (NEMA) 3 To maintain higher levels of ingress protection additional sealing is required, available on request. Impact Resistance : 7Nm Application Temperature Range : -20 to +60 C Threadforms : Metric, NPT, NPSM, ISO Pipe (BSP), PG, ET Materials : Brass CZ121, 316 Stainless Steel, Aluminium Insulating Material : Glass Filled Nylon Plating : Electroless Nickel, Zinc, Other on application APPLICATION To avoid relying on the contact between cable termination & equipment enclosure for grounding the cable armour, an insulated adaptor can be fi tted to both ends of the cable with a grounding device to ground in a controlled, positive manner that can be inspected easily. SINGLE POINT GROUNDING In many applications it is suffi cient to ground the cable at one end. For single point grounding the insulated adaptors would again be used at both ends of the cable but with the earth tag fi tted only to the end where grounding is required. Single Point Grounding can : Reduce the circulating currents that can cause heating of high capacity cables. Reduce the risk of damage to electronic equipment within the enclosure in the event of a short circuit to ground through enclosure. Reduce the problems of electrical noise on the armour affecting the dean earth required for some sensitive instruments. CAPRI 93
