13 Ice navigation Real time access to high resolution satellite data Saves time Easiest, simplest route can be identified Navigate around obstacles Saves money Less fuel consumed Less hull maintenance Less time in dry-dock and therefore potential increase in number of operating days per year. Validations during winter 2005 in the Baltic indicated a time saving potential of 20% when sailing in ice with the aid of satellite data.

25 Who needs to know? Ice Operations A ship requires up-to-date information on the specific ice conditions around her current position Allows tactical and strategic decisions to be made -Allow tasks to be completed safely and quickly A drilling platform requires up-to-date information on the ice conditions approaching it's position Allows appropriate action can be taken -ice management -re-location of the platform.

26 Who needs to know exactly? It has so far proved difficult to pin-point exactly who is responsible for acquiring ice information for a particular operation. In addition there does not seem to be any specific legislation obliging them to acquire ice information. -Do you have to obtain the latest ice chart? It seems that it is the organisation chartering a ship to go into ice which has most to gain from acquiring the best ice information. Especially if the insurance companies require that such information is acquired?
