Retainers: In the absence of a functioning brake pipe pressure maintaining feature, pressure retaining valves must be used on southward movements between Mile 7.9 and Leyland. Southward movements must make a brake test. Specific Instructions: Aluminum Cars - Cardinal River This instruction pertains to trains handling aluminum car coal sets (series FURX 960 and CN Series 192, 193 and 194) on the Luscar Industrial Spur. Trains must be powered by three six-axle locomotives equipped with dynamic brakes. Loaded trains must not operate southward on the spur with less than two of the three locomotives having the dynamic brake fully operational. In addition, to assist in braking effort, the operating brake pipe pressure is to be increased to 110 psi. Locomotive engineers should be aware that with this brake pipe pressure, a full service application of the air brakes is not reached until a 32 psi brake pipe pressure reduction is made. To take advantage of the higher braking effort of the 110 psi brake pipe, the locomotive engineer will have to make an overreduction on the automatic brake valve since the full service position on the valve is only about a 23 or 24 psi reduction. Note that the 30ACDW type valves may not properly pressure maintain with more than a 30 psi reduction. In this case, the brake pressure would slowly drop to zero as if the handle had been placed in the Handle Off position. Should this occur after the 32 lb. reduction has been attained, place the automatic brake valve back to the full service position in order to stop the brake pipe from reducing further. Please note that the brake valve will only lap when in the freight position.) When snow conditions may seriously impede braking effectiveness, the crew must advise the RTC for further instructions before proceeding.
