3 Air Brake Tests T The Air Brake Tests lesson and quiz are designed for the conductor and locomotive engineer who will be required to perform tests of the air brake system. Their safety, the safety of others and the safe operation of railway equipment depend upon their knowledge and skill in applying these tests. 4 Basic Conductor/Certification Course ZT This course provides prerequisite knowledge that is required to attain certification. Certification is granted by your railway. This program is a combination of the following courses: Basic Hazardous Materials(T ) General Code of Operating Rules-GCOR (T-00020) Basic Conductor Mechanical (T-00030) including: Freight Car Inspection; Car Brake Inspection; Telemetry Devices; and Air Brake Tests Conductor 18 hours Page 2 ZT March 2009

5 Basic Conductor/Mechanical (Combination Package) ZT The course consists of 4 lessons, 4 quizzes, and a Basic Conductor/Mechanical Examination that includes instruction and test questions on how to: Conduct safety appliance, mechanical and air brake inspections for initial terminal, enroute, roll-by and detector system alert freight car inspections Inspect and operate the car air brake system Perform tests of the air brake system Interpret and apply the information provided by the end-of-train and head-oftrain telemetry devices This program is a combination of four courses: Freight Car Inspection (T ) Car Brake System (T ) Telemetry Devices (T ) Air Brake Tests (T ) Conductor and Brake Person 5.5 hours Page 3 ZT March 2009

6 Basic Hazardous Materials T This course covers the Department of s regulations governing the transportation of HazMat by rail. The course provides railway employees with the information they need to identify, inspect and safely transport HazMat shipments. The trainee will also learn the correct procedures for responding to and reporting HazMat emergencies. Upon completion of the lessons, an examination tests the trainee s knowledge of HazMat regulations. 7 Basic Locomotive Braking T This basic mechanical course is designed for the locomotive engineer. The course consists of 5 lessons, 5 quizzes and a Locomotive Braking Examination. Car Brake System - The Car Brake System is designed for the conductor and locomotive engineer who are required to inspect and operate the car air brake system. Locomotive Air Brake System - This lesson and quiz are designed for the locomotive engineer who will be required to operate, inspect, and test the locomotive air brake system. Operating the locomotive air brake system is one of the most critical train handling procedures. Telemetry Devices The lesson and quiz are designed for conductors and locomotive engineers who will be required to interpret and apply the information provided by the end-of-train and head-of-train telemetry devices. Locomotive Dynamic Brake System The lesson and quiz are designed for the locomotive engineer who will be required to prepare, operate and control the dynamic brake system. Air Brake Tests - The lesson and quiz are designed for the conductor and locomotive engineer who will be required to perform tests of the air brake system. 9 Basic Locomotive Mechanical Systems T This basic mechanical course is designed for the locomotive engineer. The course consists of 8 lessons, 8 quizzes and a Locomotive Mechanical Systems Examination. 11 Basic Safe Yard and Industrial Switching T This course covers the regulations and safe work practices for radio operation, signals, switches and switching. For example, the trainee will be provided with information on how to communicate effectively using a radio, how to avoid damaging cars and equipment when switching, and how to interpret various railroad signals. Upon completion of the lessons, an examination tests the trainee s knowledge of practices for a safe rail yard. 13 Canadian Rail Operating Rules (C.R.O.R.) Upon successful completion of this course, trainees will have the skills and knowledge to perform basic operating tasks under the supervision of a qualified conductor in a yard and mainline environment. They will be able to demonstrate the following: Non-main track and main track rules compliance. Coupling and uncoupling procedures. Handbrake application and yard switching techniques. Safe handling of Dangerous Goods. Proper procedures relating to copying authorities. Operating Rules Non-main track rules; Main track rules; Rules applicable to switching; Radio Rules; Main track authority; Rules applied in emergencies; Systems of train control; Special Instructions; Dangerous Goods. 15 Car Maintenance & Locomotive Maintenance Course EM Equipment Maintenance Personnel This course is based on CFR 229, 231 and 232. The Railroad Safety Appliance Standards module consists of six lessons with an approximate completion time of 4 hours. The Railroad Power Brakes module consists of three lessons with an approximate completion time of 2.5 hours, and an examination with a completion time of approximately.5 hour. The Railroad Locomotive Safety Standards module consists of two lessons and an examination. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete these lessons and.5 hour to complete the examination. 17 Eastern Code Hazardous Materials Rules T The Eastern Code Hazardous Materials Rules are a set of uniform instructions for employees that transport hazardous materials by rail. This course presents the information from the Eastern Code Hazardous Materials Rules handbook, supplemented with graphics and questions. The course provides railroad employees with the information they need to identify, inspect and safely transport HazMat shipments. The trainees will also learn the correct procedures for responding to and reporting HazMat emergencies. Upon completion of the three lessons, an examination tests the trainee s knowledge of the rules. 18 Freight Car Inspection T As a conductor, the trainee will be required to conduct safety appliance, mechanical and air brake inspections. Understanding how and when to perform initial terminal, en route, roll-by and detector system alert freight car inspections will ensure safe and efficient railroad operation. 24 Roadway Worker Protection E Engineering This course covers the Code of Federal Regulations, detailing the on track safety requirements for all roadway workers. The course meets the Federal Railroad Administration requirements concerning roadway worker protection. 26 Track Safety Standards Guidelines E Engineering This course provides instruction and questions on the Track Safety Standards (49 CFR 213), as mandated by the FRA from the Code of Federal Regulations. The trainee will learn to recognize the various types of track defects that may be observed during a track inspection, and become familiar with the steps taken to accurately measure those defects. Once the defects have been detected and measured, the trainee will also learn the requirements for reporting defects and the remedial actions that must be taken. This course has been reviewed by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) The course consists of six lessons, a quiz, and an examination.
