Research on abilities of string transport on route «Kharkov Dnepr»
Information on cities Kharkov is the second most populated city of Ukraine, administrative center of Kharkov region. The population is 1,5 mln people, the total area of the city is 350 sq. km. Kharkov is a large industrial center of Ukraine. There are more than 500 enterprises with about 350,000 people working there. High technologies, such as power plant, electrical, transport, agricultural, instrumental, aerospace engineering, electronics, are the basis of production potential. Kharkov is indeed considered the student capital of Ukraine. There are 56 higher educational institutions with more than 250,000 students in this city, which supplies the region with well-qualified labour resources. Kharkov Dnepr (Dnepropetrovsk until May 19, 2016) - a city, the center of Dnepr region in Ukraine, the center of Dnepr agglomeration. The fourth most populated city in Ukraine after Kiev, Kharkov and Odessa. The population is 984,000 people (2016). The area of the city is 405 sq. km. The Dnepr transport hub is made up of eight railway stations, bus station, river port and international airport. Dnepr is one of the major industrial, economic and transport centers, the metallurgic center of Ukraine. Iron industry, metalwork and engineering are well developed there. Dnepr Dnepr is one of the leading financial centers of Ukraine. More than forty state and private banks have been acknowledged and have branches there. Dnepr is the unofficial business capital of Ukraine. The system of higher education consists of 38 higher educational institutions with more than 100,000 students. The longest quay in Europe is situated in Dnepr. 1
Existing transport routes At the moment, there are two types of transport routes «Kharkov - Dnepr»: highway and railroad Kharkov Type of transport Distance, km Voyages per day Time spend, hours Travel cost, USD Railroad ,5 10,6 Highway (coach) According to report on global competitiveness made by World economic forum, railway transport is well-developed in Ukraine, though highway quality is bad and air transport is also poorly developed. Dnepr Highway Railroad 1 Depends on the date 2
The problem of transport connection At the moment, getting from Kharkov to Dnepr and back takes comparatively much time and is uncomfortable. It results to everyday losses of time and money for all passengers on this route. 3
SkyWay proposed solution Having the same cost as train transportation, the journey will tike 6-10 less time than conventional transport. Type of transport Distance, km Voyages per day Time spend, hours Travel cost, SkyWay 176 On demand 0,5 8 USD 4
SkyWay technology String rail steel rail SkyWay technology is a transport and infrastructure complex with overpass string rail track structure. The main advantages of railway transport is used in it, while elevation to the second level provides safety and effective usage of land and resources. head filler (special concrete) string (bunch of prestressed steel wires) element for fixing string to rail body rail body Traditional overpass Rail string overpass Advantages of SkyWay technology are based on applying string rails, which are determined by high strength and lifetime, and specially designed string rail overpass, which is dozens times more light and cheap than existing solutions. String rail is a steel, reinforced concrete or steel-reinforced concrete beam or truss, equipped with a railhead and additionally reinforced with pre-stressed (stretched) strings. It combines the qualities of a flexible thread (at a large span between supports) and a rigid beam (at a small span under a wheel of a rail automobile and above the support). Each railhead carries electricity and is isolated from the bearing construction, supports and another rail. The basis of the track structure is made up of pre-stressed unsplit and ideally straight rails, which, together with supports, create light but strong and durable transport overpass. The strings are joined with anchor supports placed each 2-3 km or more, while overpass is strengthened by intermediate supports, placed each m or more. 5
SkyWay technology Traditional wheel The advantages of rolling stock (low aerodynamic resistance and steel wheels of special design) allow to significantly decrease energy consumption while moving. Anti-turnoff system provides safety and comfort. P Wheel R1 Rail R2 Besides, in this case the track is not required to be cleaned from ice in winter it is broken by steel wheels and fall down from the railhead like frost. Narrow contact patch Uneven wear Anti-turnoff system increases travelling safety by 10 times over 1,000 MPa Contact patch Support wheel Rail P Wide contact patch less than 100 MPa Contact patch V R R SkyWay wheel Aerodynamic resistance Conventional high speed train (aerofoil effect) Side (anti-derailment) wheel f = 3 м2 Сх = 0,2 0,1 P SkyWay high speed (absence of aerofoil effect) less than 200 MPa B f = 3 м2 Сх = 0,05 6
Advantages of SkyWay technology Safety placing track structure on the second, anti-turnoff system, vandal safe; Resistance to external impact: earthquakes at 9 points and higher; floods at 10 m or more; resistance to hurricanes, tsunamis, fogs, snow cover up to 5 m deep, sand and snow storms, hails, terrorist attacks; Comfort different conveniences and communications for passengers in the cabin, high running smoothness; Economic efficiency good aerodynamics and steel wheels of rolling stock, low energy consumption; Costs capital cost is times lower than other overpass transport; Speed ideally straight, velvet track, the movement speed is up to 500 km/h; Eco-friendliness no earth-embankment, no low dam, no air pollution, minimal land consumption, preserving natural ecosystems; Multipurposeness ability to build track in the mountains, through water obstacles, deserts, in areas with difficult climate conditions etc. 7

The route of the track Kharkov - Dnepr Pesochin Песочин Kharkov Харьков Krasnograd Красноград The track is 176 km long. With the course speed at 50 km/h, the average speed makes 350 km/h (including acceleration, deceleration, boarding time), so the trip from Kharkov to Dnepr will take about 30 minutes. Taking to consideration building density at major transport hubs, the stations is offered to build on the outskirts (at the stops of local transport). They can be joined with the center by urban SkyWay lines or existing city transport. Novomoskovsk Новомосковск Kamenskoe Каменское Moreover, existing stations at the city entrances have junctions to other directions: for example, for Kiev, Sumy (highways), Liubotyn, Valki, Chuguiv (city road) in Kharkov, for Krivoy Rog, Nikolayev, Odessa (highway) and Kamenskoye, Zaporozhe, Nikopol (city roads) in Dnepr. 16 Supplementary usage suspended urban and freight tracks A newly constructed high speed track can be used for suspended vehicles (at the lower level ) for passenger and freight transportation at short and medium distances ( km). This suspended system can be used as an urban track with the movement speed up to 150 km/h and frequent stops every 1-3 km. SkyWay urban vehicle a rail car also uses the concept of module construction of both modules solutions and rail car structure itself, as well as automatic control on a route based on autopilot control. The performance of SkyWay urban passenger track makes up to 25,000 passengers during rush hour. Freight rolling stock will be designed basing on suspended urban passenger unibuses, accordingly, their maximum weight, speed and carriage will be fully standardizated with passenger transport. The performance of SkyWay freight system can make 100 mln tons and more a year without creating much load to the track and, as a result, without raising its minimized (low) cost. 15
Social orientation cafes and restaurants Being the solution to transport problems, SkyWay system can also solve a number of social problems for the residents of Kharkov, Dnepr and cities nearby. Multifunctional facilities can be placed at the stations of high speed routes. trading and entertainment centers In particular, the residents of small towns and villages adjacent to large cities (at the moment, the residents of settlements like these have to go to the large cities) can have need in these objects. medical centers business centers Integration of these facilities into SkyWay transport system allows to improve the life quality in small towns significantly, makes these towns more attractive places for living. SkyWay transport system will also contribute to increase the quality of life through settling down the residents of large cities to linear ones along urban routes within Kharkov and Dnepr agglomerations, where it is possible to breathe with fresh air, eat ecologically clean food and save time while travelling to any destination (education, work, relaxation, entertainment etc.). children centers rehabilitation centers 16
Ecological friendliness of SkyWay вода $ absence of earthembankment (there is no low dam) minimal local land allocation (two orders less) preserving natural ecosystems and geobiocenosis decreased air pollution (by one order) via lowering energy consumption increased noise, vibration and electric safety saving materials, land, energy, work and finance 17
Песочин Pesochin Kharkov Харьков The perspectives of applying SkyWay technology in the region 1. Extension of the track to Odessa Krivoi rog Кривой Рог Odessa Одесса Odessa Dnepr Днепр Nikopol Никополь Zaporozhye Запорожье Николаев Nikolaev Kharkov, Dnepr, Odessa are major industrial and educational centers of Ukraine. They are not only the regional centers, but also, actually, the centers of macro regions: Kharkov northeastern macro region of Ukraine, Dnepr eastern macro region, Odessa south one. High speed passenger and freight transport between these cities will contribute to economic growth of these regions. This line will connect the cities of the South and the East of Ukraine Kharkov, Dnepr, Krivoy Rog, Nikolayev and Odessa - in one infrastructure unit. 2. Constructing a SkyWay urban line in Dnepr and Kharkov Verkhnedneprovsk Верхнеднепровск Novomoskovsk Новомосковск Podgorodnoe Подгородное Каменское Kamenskoe Днепр Dnepr Constructing a SkyWay urban line can help solve the problem of fast and comfortable transportation in Kharkov and Dnepr, moreover, in Dnepr it will also give an additional opportunity to cross the river without time spent for waiting in traffic jams on the bridges. In addition, SkyWay tracks will become one more landmark of Kharkov and Dnepr that will perfectly suit to their modern architecture. 3. SkyWay transport and infrastructure complex as the basis of Dnepr agglomeration development It is clear that agglomerations, significant for the country, cannot develop if they are not integrated into the system of high speed transport. SkyWay transport and infrastructure complex can become one of the key instruments of further development of Dnepr region. 18
